Can it be possible that it was 50 years ago this September that this aircraft made its first public appearance? Are we really all so, ahem, elderly that we Photo: True Brand, courtesy Vincent Carrà remember 1968 as if it were yesterday? This plane had its origins in 1964, when Boeing began work on a proposal for the C-5A large military airlifter contract, and after Lockheed won that contest, Boeing considered a commercial passenger version as a means of salvaging the program. Urged on by Pan Am president Juan Trippe, Boeing in 1965 assigned a team headed by Chief Engineer Joe Sutter to design a large new airliner, although Boeing at the time was really more focused on its supersonic transport (SST) program. A launch customer order from Pan Am on April 13, 1966 for twenty five aircraft pushed Sutter's program into high gear, and in a truly herculian effort, Joe Sutter and his Boeing team, dubbed “The Incredibles,” brought the program from inception on paper to the public unveiling of a finished aircraft in the then unheard of time of 29 months. Statement of Tom Williams, President of the Meridian Airport Authority, to the Subcommittee on Aviation of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation field hearing: July 27, 2004 My name is Tom Williams and I’m the President of the Meridian Airport Authority. I’ve run the Meridian Regional Airport since 1986. While my comments specifically relate to Meridian, I believe our experiences are representative of small airports nationwide. The turbulence of deregulation still affects most of us; however our Small Community Air Service Development Grant has helped us overcome some of these remaining effects. Key Field was home to the Key Brothers who, in 1935 set the world flight endurance record from our airport by flying 653 hours without landing. Today we are home to the 155 Company G Army Aviation support group, presently flying their Chinook helicopters in Iraq, the 186th Air Refueling Wing, three daily Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) jet flights to Atlanta and 45 based general aviation aircraft. The Meridian Regional Airport, Key Field, is financially self sufficient. We collect some $550,000 per year from leases, rents and fees and spend this amount on operations and non-grant eligible capital projects. Remaining capital requirements are funded through the AIP program with matching funds from the State of Mississippi and Passenger Facility Charge. Outside of our Small Community Air Service Grant, we do not have funds for marketing and air service development. The airport is operated with four employees, two are administrative and two are grounds and building maintenance. City of Meridian police provide security while the Mississippi Air National Guard provides our firefighting requirement. -

Efthimiou ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT GREGORY EFTHIMIOU: Regaining Altitude: A Case Analysis of the JetBlue Airways Valentine’s Day 2007 Crisis (Under the direction of Elizabeth Dougall, Janas Sinclair, Richard Blackburn) Valentine’s Day 2007 changed the course of history for JetBlue Airways. The upstart low-fare airline – which had enjoyed unprecedented acclaim from customers and industry observers since its launch in 2000 – suddenly found itself in the midst of a major operational catastrophe. A winter storm that enveloped the New York metropolitan region and JetBlue’s hub at John F. Kennedy International Airport left hundreds of the company’s passengers stranded aboard planes on the tarmac, some for as many as ten hours. Hundreds more waited in vain in the terminal for flights that the airline would eventually cancel. The flight disruptions at JFK plunged JetBlue’s entire operation into chaos, forcing the carrier to cancel more than one thousand flights over a six day period. INTRODUCTION AIRLINE DEREGULATION has produced a record number of mergers and bankruptcies in the airline in- dustry, turning the industry into a "national oligopoly."' Since deregulation, over 200 scheduled carriers have gone out of business, mainly because of mergers, acquisi- tions and bankruptcies. 2 As a result, the top eight carri- ers control over 90 percent of the market. Since 1978 more than 120 airlines have filed various types of bank- ruptcy proceedings.' The flurry of merger activity that began almost immediately upon enactment of deregula- tion 5 continues to be extremely vigorous.
