PRACTICAL INFORMATION _______________________________________________________ EUROCITIES SOCIAL AFFAIRS FORUM Together for Socially Sustainable Cities 22 – 24 October 2018, Stuttgart - 2 - About Stuttgart Stuttgart is situated in the heart of Europe, and it is the capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg. With about 610,000 inhabitants, it forms the centre of the Stuttgart Region, which boasts of in total 2.7 million inhabitants and employs 1 million people. Europe’s strongest region in terms of exports supports its strength through the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors. Hand in hand with industrial growth, Stuttgart can be proud of its scientific development. Eurostat figures reveal the Stuttgart Region to be Europe’s leading high-tech area, which is a result of close cooperation between universities, research establishments and companies. What distinguishes Stuttgart and what makes the city so likeable? Everyone is sure to have a different answer to this. However, primarily it is due to the people from over 170 nations who live together peacefully and shape the quality of life. More than half of all children and young people in Stuttgart have a migrant background. Stuttgart is also famous for its many parks and green areas, a great cultural scene, iconic city districts with a bustling club scene, vineyards in the heart of the city, mineral baths for relaxation and much more – in short: the city is all about a high quality of life. Stuttgart is modern, urban, cosmopolitan and sustainable: a great city and a great place to live. Stuttgart’s rich culture programme will surprise: Stuttgart Ballet, the State Opera, National Gallery and Museum of Art, numerous theatres, concerts and museums. Furthermore, the many concerts, festivals and celebrations shape life in the city: starting with the Cannstatter Folk Festival (the 2nd largest festival in Germany), the Weindorf Wine Festival and the Christmas Market through to the International Animated Film Festival or the Summer Festival of Cultures – and if you still have energy after these, you can enjoy the trendy clubs and bars in the city centre: event calendar. Stuttgart will become climate-neutral in 2050: The energy transition was drawn up in an Energy Concept for Stuttgart. Since 2012, the city administration’s energy use is of 100 % of renewable energies. Stuttgart fair and solidary: The municipal local development policies are focussed on sustainability and are implemented by various Offices and Departments in the city administration as well as, above all, the civil society institutions. In 2013, more than two thirds of the Stuttgart districts were certified as Fairtrade quarters, this was followed by a Fairtrade certification for the entire city. The Welthaus was set up, a centre initiated by dedicated citizens from “one-world groups” (active in global issues) and migrant organisations to promote an intercultural exchange, global learning and co-existence with a sense of togetherness and solidarity within the Stuttgart society. In that way, Stuttgart linked the political strategy of the city with the SDGs in a comprehensive and coherent framework that focusses on governance and has a cross-sectoral and multi- stakeholder approach. It bridges the gap between silos and enhances cooperation among different stakeholders towards the common goal of achieving the SDGs. __________________________________________________________________________ - 3 - Accommodation For the period of 21 to 24 October 2018 you will find a choice of hotels for the conference via the booking link www.stuttgart-tourist.de/eurocitiessaf2018.
