Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships. -

Media Release ‘Then & now’ images reclaim little-known Greek-Australian WWI story 24/02/2015 An evocative series of ‘then and now’ photographs – on show at the State Library of NSW from 24 February 2015 – will help shed light on the little-known stories of Australian nurses and soldiers on the small Greek island of Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign. Lemnos 1915: Then & now presents 16 powerful photographs which place 100 year-old B&W images of Australian nurses and soldiers within modern, colour landscapes taken in the same location by Sydney-based couple, playwright Cheryl Ward and Bernard de Broglio. “I was fascinated with Lemnos. It was probably one of the hardest places for the Australian nurses to serve,” says Cheryl Ward. “The hospital tents were regularly blown over, the tent kitchen would catch on fire, not to mention the dysentery, lack of fresh water, the relentless swarm of flies and burrs blowing around that forced nurses to cut off their hair.” Lemnos was the principal assembly, embarkation and supply point for the Gallipoli landings. Thousands of exhausted and badly wounded Anzacs were treated there by some 130 Australian nurses in makeshift hospitals set up from August 1915. Other major Allied medical hospitals supporting the Gallipoli campaign were also on the island and included Canadians, British and New Zealanders. With few physical remnants of WWI on the island, Cheryl and Bernard set about relocating the original site of the field hospitals using a sketch map, then poured over Google Earth to match the background in the historic photos they found in the State Library of NSW’s collection, taken by Australian soldier Albert William Savage. -
Nuclear Weapons in Europe: British and French Deterrence Forces in a European Context Has Come to the Fore in Recent Years
Questions about the meaning, role and utility of nuclear deterrence forces deterrence and French British in Europe: weapons Nuclear in a European context has come to the fore in recent years. Russia has reemphasized the role of a full-spectrum nuclear arsenal. This includes increased reliance on substrategic nuclear weapons for battlefield use, to compensate for its perceived inferiority in conventional armaments. In Europe, the main multilateral and intergovernmental institutions and cooperation have been put under strain as a result of several negative developments. As a consequence the UK and France, Europe’s two nuclear powers, are debating the role and composition of their respective deterrent forces. Multiple, complex security dilemmas, and the possibility that established alliances and partnerships might not be sufficiently reliable, inform the choices that have to be made. The study concludes that while the current arsenals will remain fundamental to national security, their long term futures are far from certain. Budgetary constraints, domestic politics, and strategic perceptions informed by national nuclear mentalities are the main factors determining the outcome and composition of French and British arsenals beyond 2030. Power At Sea: A Naval Power Dataset, 1865-20111 Brian Benjamin Crisher Florida State University Mark Souva Florida State University Abstract Naval power is a crucial element of state power, yet existing naval datasets are limited to a small number of states and ship types. Here we present 147 years of naval data on all the world’s navies from 1865 to 2011. This country-year dataset focuses on warships with ship-based weapons capable of using kinetic force to inflict damage on other structures or peoples. After identifying a country’s active naval forces, we create a measure of naval power based on the aggregate tonnage of the active ships. Additionally, we create count variables for ship types such as aircraft carriers or battleships. This paper introduces the country-year data, describes variables of interests for use in country-year, dyadic, or systemic studies and suggests potential questions of interest scholars could explore using the naval power dataset. 1 We are grateful to David Abitbol, Cameron Cankaya, and Spencer Willis for their hard work as coders on this project. Disaster in Harbour: The Loss of HMS Vanguard William Schleihauf Lying peacefully at anchor in the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow, the battleship HMS Vanguard suddenly blew-up on a quiet summer night in July 1917, leaving but a handful of survivors. Accident or sabotage? While the trail of evidence uncovered by the Court of Inquiry furnished no definitive answer, the conclusion that it was an accidental cordite explosion makes the most sense and has not been seriously challenged to this day. Her remains are still in the Flow, but it is unlikely that even a full archaeological survey could determine anything other than that it was indeed an explosion in one of the amidships magazines which sank the ship. The records of the Court of Inquiry shed light on the internal routines of the Royal Navy's capital ships: even in such basic (and vital) procedures as the taking of magazine temperatures, each ship handled matters in its own way. Of equal interest are the many improvements which resulted from the loss of Vanguard. Surprisingly little has been written about the sudden, catastrophic sinking of this powerful man-of-war - it is not even mentioned in the official History. ' Typical is the simple "destroyed by internal explosion at Scapa 9 July '17" in Oscar Parkes' British Battleships.2 Other later references provide little more: even R. A. Burt in his detailed British Battleships of World War One only summarises the evidence.3 In his book about the loss of the armoured cruiser HMS Natal, Cecil Hampshire discusses the Vanguard tragedy but the description is marred by his attempt to use very circumstantial evidence to find a saboteur.4 The paper before you is an in-depth look at Vanguard's destruction and the lessons learned from it, with emphasis placed on the technical tidbits that are of value when trying to learn about the day-to-day habits of the wartime Royal Navy. -

THE CENTENARY OF ARMISTICE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SAIL the Aegean, Gallipoli AND BEYOND FROM THESSALONIKI TO ATHENS 11 – 20 October 2018 Guest speaker – international authority on the First World War, professor jay winter JAY WINTER is Professor of History emeritus at Yale University, and Research Professor at Monash University. He is a specialist of the First World War and its impact on the 20th century. He is the author of Sites of Memory, Sites of Mourning (1998), and Dreams of Peace and Freedom (2007), Remembering War (2007), and War beyond words (2017). He is editor of the Cambridge History of the First World War, which has appeared in English, French and Chinese. He won an Emmy award in 1997 as producer and historian of the BBC/PBS series The Great War and the shaping of the twentieth century, and is a founder and emeritus director of the Historial de la grande guerre, a museum of the First World War on the Somme. When Gallipoli was evacuated many of the troops went on to other Mediterranea fronts; the British and French to the Salonika Font in northern Greece, the Anzac Mounted Division joined Britain’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force and the Indians went to Mesopotamia. These were campaigns fought against disease and the climate as much as against opposing troops. They endured and this voyage commemorates the beginning of the end of the First World War. Weeks before the November 1918 Armistice with Germany, Armistices were signed in Greece with Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. It was here on these largely forgotten fronts in the Eastern Mediterranean that survivors could start to think about a life without ‘the War.’ ‘The War’ did not end tidily though; for the people of Britain and its Dominions a different struggle started, the struggle to live with what had happened. -
