Memorial 2 J H L 16. M 1819 A.H. 47. 1824 This is probably a footstone, originally marking the grave of John Hurford Lake (JHL), aged 16 months, son of John Lake and his wife Ann (A.H.). John Hurford Lake was buried in April 1819 and Ann Lake died five years later in November 1824, aged 47. Barfleur, married Ann Hurford at St Mary Major in Exeter on 28 October 1799.1 John was the son of John and Elizabeth Lake and had been baptised at Bow Meeting House in Exeter on 11 June 1775.2 No baptism record has been found for Ann Hurford. John had served in the Royal Navy for a number of years prior to his wedding. He was an L.M. or landsman3 on H.M.S. Culloden on the Glorious First of June in 1794 and also worked as a Steward’s Purser on the same ship. He took part in the battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. John continued to serve in the Navy after his wedding and was a Purser’s Steward on H.M.S. Neptune at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.4 After the battle HMS Neptune towed HMS Victory, which was carrying Lord Nelson’s body, to Gibraltar.5 John and Ann’s daughter Margaret was born on 30 September 1811 and was baptised at Bow Meeting House in Exeter on 20 October 1811.6 John Hurford Lake was born six years later on 21 December 1817. -

Sam McLean Major Research Paper 095708700 Acknowledgements This project is not the paper that I proposed at the beginning of my MA studies. It is, as a result of those studies, much more focused in purpose, conception, and execution. This paper reflects the transition from classic naval historian to cultural historian and is the result of supervision by Professors Roger Sarty, Elizabeth Ewan, George Urbaniak, Geoffrey Hayes and Greta Kroeker. Their combined efforts led me to re-evaluate my historical interests and approach, and helped me to discover the importance of historical complexity as the foundation of understanding. Thanks also to the members of the Canadian Nautical Research Society who responded to my presentation of this paper at the society’s annual conference in June 2010 with helpful comments and recommendations. Finally, thanks again to Professor Roger Sarty for his patience and aid in the final stages of this project. 1 Sam McLean Major Research Paper 095708700 Introduction During the first part of the Second World War, Sir Herbert Richmond, professor at Cambridge University and the leading British naval historian, asserted that old-fashioned historical education of the Royal Navy’s officers had a deleterious effect on the navy’s operational performance. This paper is an examination of the impact of what Richmond called the “Blood and Thunder” school of history on the Royal Navy’s professional culture, and the effects of that culture on tactical decision-making during the period 1939 to 1943. The objective is to gain further insight into the institutional culture of the Royal Navy, greater understanding of how officers made tactical decisions, but most importantly endeavour to test more precisely the linkages between professional culture and decision-making in battle. -

SHIPS OVERSEAS TO JUNE 194 0 URING the first ten months of the war, those Australian ships not D retained on the home station were employed in Imperial dispositions in widely separated areas . The first six months found Perth in Central American waters, mainly engaged in the dual task of protecting trade — especially the important tanker traffic in the Caribbean—and preventin g the escape of German merchant ships sheltering in neutral ports of th e islands and the Isthmus . Last of the three expansion-program cruiser s acquired from Britain, she had commissioned at Portsmouth on the 29th June 1939 as H .M.A. Ship under "Fighting Freddie " Farncomb, a studious , coolly-efficient officer whose nickname, bestowed during the war, reflected the confidence and esteem of the lower deck . Perth sailed from Portsmouth on the 26th July for Australia via th e Panama Canal, and reached New York, where she represented Australi a at the World Fair, on the 4th August. On the 21st of the month, after twelve days of American hospitality, she arrived at Kingston, Jamaica, an d was to have sailed for Panama on the 23rd, but in the early morning o f that date Farncomb received a signal sent to the Admiralty by the Com- mander-in-Chief, America and West Indies—Vice-Admiral Meyrick' — asking that Perth might remain on the station . Farncomb thereupon can- celled his sailing arrangements, thus anticipating an Admiralty signa l received later in the day directing him to "return Kingston and awai t further orders " . -

Washington RACAL The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade The Department of the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories Underwater Systems Australia Report-Department of Maritime Archaeology, Western Australian Museum, No. 43 2 Background to the report In July 1988, a wreck believed to be the SS Koombanah, which disappeared with all hands in waters off Western Australia in 1921, was officially reported to the W. A. Museum and the federal government by Captain David Tomlinson, (Master/owner of the Darwin based Research Vessel Flamingo Bay) and Mr Mike Barron, a Tasmanian associate of Tomlinson's, fr;om the Commonwealth Fisheries. In order to facilitate an inspection of the site, it was decided on analysis of the available options and in the light of the W.A. Museum's policy of involving the finders where possible, to join with Messrs Tomlinson and Barron in an inspection out of Darwin on board the RV Flamingo Bay, a very well equipped and most suitable vessel for such a venture. Due to the depth of the water in which the site lay and the distance off shore, this required not only the charter of Flamingo Bay which normally runs at circa $2000 per day, but also the hire of a sophisticated position fixing system, a Remote Operated Submersible Vehicle with camera (ROV), echo sounder and side scan sonar. -

Version 1.0 | Last updated 13 January 2016 Dreadnought, HMS By John Abbatiello Adopted in 1906, HMS Dreadnought represented an innovative battleship design that changed the nature of the Anglo- German naval race preceding the Great War. A hybrid Dreadnought battlecruiser design soon followed; by 1914, all major navies measured their strength by the number of Dreadnought battleships and battlecruisers they possessed. Table of Contents 1 Pre-war Battleship Design 2 Dreadnought Design Innovations 3 Ship History 4 Impact Selected Bibliography Citation Pre-war Battleship Design Technological development during the steamship age pushed 19th century warship design to its limits, featuring battleships mounting large caliber, turreted guns, driven by high output piston steam engines, and protected by steel armor. By the turn of last century, a typical battleship mounted four 12-inch guns in two twin-turrets and was armed with an assortment of intermediate gun batteries throughout the ship. Reciprocating steam engines produced enough power to drive the ships to high speeds, typically fifteen to eighteen knots. Major drawbacks of these designs included difficulty in fire control for the different caliber ammunition. Also, the steam engines required lengthy periods in port for maintenance overhauls and could not be run at full speed for very long without risking breakdowns. Early in the 20th century, British Admiralty leaders learned of plans by American, Italian and Japanese navies to design and build “all big gun” battleships, a concept publicized by Italian naval engineer Vittorio Cuniberti (1854-1913) in 1903. Led by First Sea Lord, Sir John Fisher (1841-1920), British decision makers designed the HMS Dreadnought to steal the lead on the plans of other navies and launch a battleship that would outfight any ship afloat. -

Michael H. Clemmesen 31‐12‐2012 The War Room Managed North Sea Trap 1907‐1916. The Substance, Roots and Fate of the Secret Fisher‐Wilson “War Plan”. Initial remarks In 1905, when the Royal Navy fully accepted the German High Seas Fleet as its chief opponent, it was already mastering and implementing reporting and control by wireless telegraphy. The Admiralty under its new First Sea Lord, Admiral John (‘Jacky’) Fisher, was determined to employ the new technology in support and control of operations, including those in the North Sea; now destined to become the main theatre of operations. It inspired him soon to believe that he could centralize operational control with himself in the Admiralty. The wireless telegraph communications and control system had been developed since 1899 by Captain, soon Rear‐Admiral Henry Jackson. Using the new means of communications and intelligence he would be able to orchestrate the destruction of the German High Seas Fleet. He already had the necessary basic intelligence from the planned cruiser supported destroyer patrols off the German bases, an operation based on the concept of the observational blockade developed by Captain George Alexander Ballard in the 1890s. #216 ALLAN SANFORD: USS WARD Steven Haller (SH): My name is Steven Haller, and I'm here with James P. Delgado, at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. It's December 5, 1991, at about 5:25 PM. And we have the pleasure to be interviewing Mr. Allan Sanford. Mr. Sanford was a Seaman First Class on the USS WARD, at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. Mr.[Sanford], Ward's gun fired what is in essence the first shot of World War II, and so it's a great pleasure to be able to be talking with you today. We're going to be doing this tape as a part of the National Park Service and ARIZONA Memorial's oral history program. We're doing it in conjunction with KHET-TV in Honolulu. So thanks again for being with us today, Mr. Sanford. Allan Sanford: It's a pleasure to be here. SH: Good. How did you get into the Navy? AS: I joined the Naval reserve unit in St. Paul, Minnesota and with two others of my classmates in high school. And we enjoyed the meetings, and uniforms, and drills, and it was a nice social activity that was a little more mature than some of the high school activities that we had participated in. So we enjoyed the meetings of the St. Paul Naval reserve. And we called it also the Minnesota Naval Militia. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how the battlecruiser concept as an organizational gestalt was developed, adopted and assessed in the British Royal Navy (RN) in 1904- 1918 from the perspective of the top leader’s personality and managerial attention.
