The landscape value of these areas attracts the urban population, which contributes to local sustainable development process but also promotes construction. New businesses associated with rural multifunctionality and value-added activities related to environmental quality were identified. New residents have contributed introducing responsible patterns of consumer, eco- entrepreneurship by women, recovery of abandoned buildings and intensification of rural-urban relationships. Negative impacts such as intensive construction of second homes, with a lower use, in some areas around Cadí-Moixeró threaten biodiversity and habitat connectivity. -

About Fanjeaux, France Perched on the Crest of a Hill in Southwestern
About Fanjeaux, France Perched on the crest of a hill in Southwestern France, Fanjeaux is a peaceful agricultural community that traces its origins back to the Romans. According to local legend, a Roman temple to Jupiter was located where the parish church now stands. Thus the name of the town proudly reflects its Roman heritage– Fanum (temple) Jovis (Jupiter). It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town with only 900 inhabitants was a busy commercial and social center of 3,000 people during the time of Saint Dominic. When he arrived on foot with the Bishop of Osma in 1206, Fanjeaux’s narrow streets must have been filled with peddlers, pilgrims, farmers and even soldiers. The women would gather to wash their clothes on the stones at the edge of a spring where a washing place still stands today. The church we see today had not yet been built. According to the inscription on a stone on the south facing outer wall, the church was constructed between 1278 and 1281, after Saint Dominic’s death. You should take a walk to see the church after dark when its octagonal bell tower and stone spire, crowned with an orb, are illuminated by warm orange lights. This thick-walled, rectangular stone church is an example of the local Romanesque style and has an early Gothic front portal or door (the rounded Romanesque arch is slightly pointed at the top). The interior of the church was modernized in the 18th century and is Baroque in style, but the church still houses unusual reliquaries and statues from the 13th through 16th centuries. -

©Copyright 2017 Yu Sasaki Precocious Enough to Rationalize Culture? Explaining the Success and Failure of Nation-building in Europe, 1400–2000 Yu Sasaki A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Anthony Gill, Chair Edgar Kiser Victor Menaldo Steven Pfaff Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of Political Science University of Washington Abstract Precocious Enough to Rationalize Culture? Explaining the Success and Failure of Nation-building in Europe, 1400–2000 Yu Sasaki Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Anthony Gill Political Science Why do some ethnic groups consolidate their cultural practices earlier than others? Extant schol- arship in ethnicity, nations, and state-building hypothesizes that the state is the most important determinant. In my dissertation, I argue that it is not the only channel and there are other fac- tors that matter. In three standalone essays, I investigate the role of (1) geography, (2) technology, and (3) public goods provision at the ethnic-group level. I provide a simple conceptual frame- work of how each of these determinants affects cultural consolidation for ethnic groups. I argue that geographical conditions and technology adoption can have a positive impact on ethnic groups’ ability to develop unique cultural attributes without an independent state. Although they may be politically incorporated by stronger groups in the modern period, they still demand self-rule or standardize their vernacular. I also argue that, in contrast with the expectation from the political economy research on ethnicity, cultural consolidation does not always yield public goods provision at the ethnic-group level. -
Catalan Farmhouses and Farming Families in Catalonia Between the 16Th and Early 20Th Centuries
CATALAN HISTORICAL REVIEW, 9: 71-84 (2016) Institut d’Estudis Catalans, Barcelona DOI: 10.2436/20.1000.01.122 · ISSN: 2013-407X http://revistes.iec.cat/chr/ Catalan farmhouses and farming families in Catalonia between the 16th and early 20th centuries Assumpta Serra* Institució Catalana d’Estudis Agraris Received 20 May 2015 · Accepted 15 July 2015 Abstract The masia (translated here as the Catalan farmhouse), or the building where people reside on a farming estate, is the outcome of the landscape where it is located. It underwent major changes from its origins in the 11th century until the 16th century, when its evolu- tion peaked and a prototype was reached for Catalonia as a whole. For this reason, in the subsequent centuries the model did not change, but building elements were added to it in order to adapt the home to the times. Catalan farmhouses are a historical testimony, and their changes and enlargements always reflect the needs of their inhabitants and the technological possibilities of the period. Keywords: evolution, architectural models, farmhouses, rural economy, farming families Introduction techniques or the spread of these techniques became availa- ble to more and more people. Larger or more numerous Some years ago, historians stopped studying only the ma- rooms characterised the evolution of a structure that was jor political events or personalities to instead focus on as- originally called a hospici, domus, casa or alberg, although pects that were closer to the majority of the people, because we are not certain of the reason behind such a variety of this is where the interest lies: in learning about our ances- words. -

Bulls and Donkeys. National Identity and Symbols in Catalonia and Spain
9TH ANNUAL JOAN GILI MEMORIAL LECTURE Miquel Strubell i Trueta Bulls and donkeys. National identity and symbols in Catalonia and Spain The Anglo-Catalan Society 2008 2 Bulls and donkeys. National identity and symbols in Catalonia and Spain 9TH ANNUAL JOAN GILI MEMORIAL LECTURE Miquel Strubell i Trueta Bulls and donkeys. National identity and symbols in Catalonia and Spain The Anglo-Catalan Society 2008 2 3 The Annual Joan Gili Memorial Lecture Bulls and donkeys. National identity and symbols in Catalonia and 1 Spain In this paper, after an initial discussion about what identity means and how to measure it, I intend to review some studies and events in Spain in which identity issues arise. The conclusion will be reached that identities in Spain, in regard to people’s relationship with Spain itself and with Catalonia, are by no means shared, and the level of both stereotyping and prejudice, on the one hand, and of collective insecurity (even “self-hatred”) on the other, are, I claim, higher than in consolidated nation-states of western Europe, with the partial exceptions of the United Kingdom and Belgium. Let me from the outset say how honoured I am, in having been invited to deliver this paper, to follow in the footsteps of such outstanding Catalan academics as Mercè Ibarz, Antoni Segura, Joan F. Mira, Marta Pessarrodona, Miquel Berga … and those before them. The idea of dedicating what up till then had been the Fundació Congrés de Cultura lectures to the memory of Joan Gili (Barcelona 1907 - Oxford 1998) was an inspiration. Unlike some earlier Memorial lecturers, however, I was fortunate enough to have a special personal relationship with him and, of course, with his wife Elizabeth. -
Social Representations and Cross-Border Cooperation La Catalanidad Al Norte Y Al Sur De Los Pirineos: Representaciones Sociales Y Cooperación Transfronteriza
FRONTERA NORTE VOL. 31, ART. 11, 2019 http://dx.doi.org/10.33679/rfn.v1i1.2044 Catalanness to the North and South of the Pyrenees: Social Representations and Cross-Border Cooperation La catalanidad al norte y al sur de los Pirineos: representaciones sociales y cooperación transfronteriza Perla Dayana Massó Soler1 ABSTRACT This article explores the symbolic construction of the border by actors in cooperation projects in the cross-border Catalan region. Drawing on Jerome Bruner’s narrative approach (with an eMphasis on self-stories and Micro-narratives) and the theory of social representations, this work provides an insight into the Multi-diMensional relationship between borders and identities, and the connections between social representations and practices that illustrate cross-border aspects. Thus, the key focus of this analysis is to determine how current practices in terms of flows, passage, and cooperation in Europe influence iMaginaries and the discursive construction of the border. Keywords: 1. Narratives, 2. borders, 3. identity, 4. otherness, 5. Catalonia.
