GENERAL INTRODUCTION The following systematic revisions of New Zealand taxa within the Arionacean subfamilies F l ammulininae Climo, 1969, Otoconchinae Cockerell, 1893 and Endodontinae Suter, 1913 (family Endodontidae Pilsbry, 1894) are based on quantitative reappraisals of shell morphology and studi es on radular and soft-part morphology. The last major revision of these New Zealand pulmonate taxa was presented by Suter (1 913) i n hi s Manual of the New Zealand Mollusca, and illustra ted in hi s Atlas of Plates which appeared in 1915. Suter' s work was, as were the great majority of earlier pulmonate systematic studies, based on studies of shell and radular morphology, and was the major contribution towards the erection of a systematic hierarchy which illustrated the indigenous nature of the New Zealand endodontid fauna. -

It has always been my conviction that the spasmodic and haphazard collecting so far undertaken has not exhausted the molluscan species to be found in the deeper waters of South- eastern Australia. Only two large single collections have been made; first by the vessel " Challenger " in 1874 at Station 162 off East Moncoeur Island in 38 fathoms. These collections were described in the " Challenger " reports by Rev. Boog. Watson (Gastropoda) and E. A. Smith (Pelecypoda). In the latter was included a description of a shell Thracia watsoni not since taken in Victoria though dredged by Mr. David Howlett off St. Francis Island, South Australia. In 1910 the F. I. S. " Endeavour " made a number of hauls both north and south of Gabo Island and off Cape Everard. The u results of this collecting can be found in the Endeavour " reports. T. Iredale, 1924, published the results of shore and dredging collections made by Roy Bell. Since this time continued haphazard collecting has been carried out mostly as a hobby by trawler fishermen either for their own interest or on behalf of interested friends. Although some of this material has reached the hands of competent workers, over the years the recording of new species has probably been delayed. -

Zetela is a genus of marine gastropods belonging to the family Solariellidae (Vetigastropoda, Trochoidea). The species Zetela alphonsi Vilvens, 2002 was origi- nally described using classical conchological characters from samples obtained from deep water off Chiloé, Chile, but no other features were recorded in the original description. In the present paper, taxonomically relevant characters such as the operculum, radula, and soft part anatomy are illustrated and described for the first time from a specimen of Zetela alphonsi from a new locality, a methane seep area off the coast of central Chile. We find that many features differ substantially from other members of the genus, including several which deviate from characters that are diagnostic for Zetela. Zetela alphonsi also lacks retinal screening pigment, giving the appearance of eyelessness from gross examination. Although pigmenta- tion loss has been reported in other deep sea genera, this feature has not been re- ported in any other members of Zetela. We reconstructed a tomographic model of the eye and eyestalk, and demonstrate that a vestigial eye is still present but exter- nally invisible due to the loss of pigmentation. Based on these new morphological characters, particularly observations of the radula, we suggest that the current placement of this species in the genus Zetela should be reconsidered. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – The coast of the Western Australian Kimberley boasts an archipelago that comprises several hundred large islands and thousands much smaller. While the non–marine gastropod fauna of the Kimberley mainland has been surveyed to some extent, the fauna of these islands had never been comprehensively surveyed and only anecdotal and unsystematic data on species occurrences have been available. During the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation’s Kimberley Island Survey, 2008–2010, 22 of the largest islands were surveyed. Altogether, 17 species of terrestrial non–camaenid snails were found on these islands. This corresponds to about 75% of all terrestrial, non–camaenid gastropods known from the entire Kimberley region. In addition, four species of pulmonate freshwater snails were found to occur on one or more of four of these islands. Individual islands harbour up to 15, with an average of eight, species each. Species diversity was found to be higher in the wetter parts of the region. -

2014 Draft Proposal for an Orkney Scallop Regulating Order Orkney Sustainable 4 Ferry Terminal Bu Kirkwall Pier, Kirkwall Orkney KW15 1HU orkneysustainablefi [1] Application to Establish a Regulating Order in terms of Sea Fisheries (Shellfish) Act 1967 for Scallop Species in and around Orkney Executive Summary Scallop fishermen in Orkney understand the principles of, and operate to ensure that, the Orkney scallop fishery can be handed as a sustainable fishery for the next generation. A result of their observation and their recent industry initiated research project ‘Spatial Dynamics in the Orkney Dive Fishery’ ( Annex VII) has prompted these fishermen seek a Regulating Order to provide for the maintenance and improvement of the fisheries for King Scallop (Pecten maximus) and Queen Scallop (Pecten opercularis) (known as queenies). As the effort being directed against the Orkney Scallop fishery does not solely arise from the operation of these progressive fishermen, having examined all the possibilities to ensure a sustainable fishery have concluded that the obtaining of a Regulating Order will be the most effective action in obtaining their objective. The King Scallop fishery makes an important contribution to Orkney’s total shellfish and whitefish industry and to the isles’ economy in general. Some shellfish stocks such as Buckies (Buccinum) and Queen Scallops in Orkney waters have been over-fished in the past and as a result their stocks have collapsed which means they can no longer contribute to the local economy nor be used as part of a flexible seasonal fishing plan by fishermen. Without proper evidence it is not possible to say what the state of many stocks are. -
Observations on the Native Land Mollusca of Taranaki
TANE 20 1974 OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATIVE LAND MOLLUSCA OF TARANAKI By P.G. Parkinson* SUMMARY The author's recent collections of land snails from parts of Egmont National Park reveal a total of 40 species of which 22 are new records for Taranaki and three are putative new species (not herein described). When earlier publications of the mollusca of Taranaki are taken into consideration the local fauna is found to consist of 65 recorded species. The commonest species found in the author's montane collections appear to be Charopa pseudoleioda, Ch. reeftonensis, Laoma regularis and Paralaoma sericata "brown", which appear in almost two-thirds of all the samples. Other common species are Ch. wairarapa (a new record), Laoma mariae, Obanella rimutaka and O. spectabilis (both new records) and a putative new species Paralaoma "roseate". The only common native slug is Athoracophorus bitentaculatus rufovenosus. The discovery of the interesting "Egmont Paryphanta" is described and the known collections traced. PREVIOUS LAND SNAIL COLLECTIONS FROM TARANAKI Land Mollusca seem to have been first collected in Taranaki by Mr R. Murdoch of Wanganui who published some of his findings9 and by Preston (published by Sykes14). Most of Murdoch's collection was destroyed by fire sometime before 1913 but duplicates of most of his species were in the collection of Suter (formerly at Wanganui but now in the National Museum, Wellington), and these specimens are the basis of the records made by Suter in his Manual13. These collections furthermore provide the distribution records for Climo5'6 in his review of the New Zealand Charopids. -
