Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

Zetela is a genus of marine gastropods belonging to the family Solariellidae (Vetigastropoda, Trochoidea). The species Zetela alphonsi Vilvens, 2002 was origi- nally described using classical conchological characters from samples obtained from deep water off Chiloé, Chile, but no other features were recorded in the original description. In the present paper, taxonomically relevant characters such as the operculum, radula, and soft part anatomy are illustrated and described for the first time from a specimen of Zetela alphonsi from a new locality, a methane seep area off the coast of central Chile. We find that many features differ substantially from other members of the genus, including several which deviate from characters that are diagnostic for Zetela. Zetela alphonsi also lacks retinal screening pigment, giving the appearance of eyelessness from gross examination. Although pigmenta- tion loss has been reported in other deep sea genera, this feature has not been re- ported in any other members of Zetela. We reconstructed a tomographic model of the eye and eyestalk, and demonstrate that a vestigial eye is still present but exter- nally invisible due to the loss of pigmentation. Based on these new morphological characters, particularly observations of the radula, we suggest that the current placement of this species in the genus Zetela should be reconsidered. -

A middle Hettangian marine gastropod assemblage is reported from the Kenai Peninsula of south-central Alaska supplying new paleontological evidence of this group in Lower Jurassic rocks of North America. Pleurotomaria pogibshiensis sp. nov. is described from the middle Hettangian marine succession informally known as Pogibshi formation, being the first occurrence of the genus in the Kenai Peninsula and the oldest occurrence of the genus in present-day Alaska and North America. One species of the genus Lithotrochus, namely Lithotrochus humboldtii (von Buch), is also reported for the first time from the Kenai Peninsula. Assignment of species to genera has proved difficult in the past, and the type genus has sometimes acted as a ‘wastebasket’ for species that cannot easily be referred to another genus. In the light of a new systematic framework provided by two recent publications presenting the first molecular phylogenetic data for the group, we reassess the shell characters that are most useful for delimiting genera. -

Plate 12 Mollusca of New Caledonia Virginie HEROS, Pierre LOZOUET, Philippe MAESTRATI, Rudo von COSEL, Delphine BRABANT, Philippe BOUCHET Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris [email protected] The first record of a land mollusc (Placostyllls fibratus (Martyn, 1789» from New Caledonia can unequivocally be traced to the voyage of Cook that discovered the island in 1774. By contrast, the marine molluscs of New Caledonia ironically remained out of reach to European natural history cabinets until well jnto the 19th century. New Caledonia remained untouched by the circum navigating expeditions of the 1830-1840s onboard, e.g., the Astrolabe, the Zilie or the Uranie. Seashells may have been collected in New Caledonia by whalers and other merchants in search of sandalwood or beche-de-mer, and then traded, but by the time they reached European conchologists, all indication of their geographical origin had faded away. It is impossible to tell whether Indo-West Pacific species originally described from localities such as «Mers du Sud» or «Southern Seas» were originally collected in, e.g., Fiji, Tahiti, Australia or New Caledonia. However, even if New Caledonian shells may have arrived on the European market or in cabinets, it must have been in very small amount, as such an emblematic species of the New Caledonia molluscan fauna as Nalltilus maeromphalus was not named until 1859. In fact, it was not until Xavier Montrouzier set foot in New Caledonia that the island was placed on the map of marine conchology. From there on, three major periods can be recognized in the history of New Caledonia marine malacology. -
