The Slit Bearing Nacreous Archaeogastropoda of the Triassic Tropical Reefs in the St
Berliner paläobiologische Abhandlungen 10 5-47 Berlin 2009-11-11 The slit bearing nacreous Archaeogastropoda of the Triassic tropical reefs in the St. Cassian Formation with evaluation of the taxonomic value of the selenizone Klaus Bandel Abstract: Many Archaeogastropoda with nacreous shell from St. Cassian Formation have a slit in the outer lip that gives rise to a selenizone. The primary objective of this study is to analyze family level characters, provide a revision of some generic classifications and compare with species living today. Members of twelve families are recognized with the Lancedellidae n. fam., Rhaphistomellidae n. fam., Pseudowortheniellidae n. fam., Pseudoschizogoniidae n. fam., Wortheniellidae n. fam. newly defined. While the organization of the aperture and the shell structure is similar to that of the living Pleurotomariidae, morphology of the early ontogenetic shell and size and shape of the adult shell distinguish the Late Triassic slit bearing Archae- gastropoda from these. In the reef environment of the tropical Tethys Ocean such Archaeogastropoda were much more diverse than modern representatives of that group from the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. Here Haliotis, Seguenzia and Fossarina represent living nacreous gastropods with slit and are compared to the fossil species. All three have distinct shape and arrangement of the teeth in their radula that is not related to that of the Pleurotomariidae and also differs among each other. The family Fossarinidae n. fam. and the new genera Pseudowortheniella and Rinaldoella are defined, and a new species Campbellospira missouriensis is described. Fowler and Kulm (19701, in a predominantly geolgg isal study, used the presence of sublittor31 and planktsnic foraminiferans as an indication of uplift of tfie deep-sea fioor. Their resuits showed tiac sedinenta ana foraminiferans are depositea in the Zscanaba Trough, in the southern part of the Corda Ridge, by turbidity currents with a continental origin. They list 22 species of fararniniferans from the Gorda Rise (See Appendix 13. A more recent study collected geophysical, geological, and biological data from the Gorda Ridge, with particular emphasis on the northern part of the Ridge (Clague et al. 19843. Geological data suggest the presence of widespread low-temperature hydrothermal activity along the axf s of the northern two-thirds of the Corda 3idge. However, the relative age of these vents, their present activity and presence of sulfide deposits are currently unknown. The biological data, again with an emphasis on foraminiferans, indicate relatively high species diversity and high density , perhaps assoc iated with widespread hydrotheraal activity. -

In summer 2013, the trophic relationships within a kelp belt food web in Kongsfjorden (Spitsbergen) were determined using fatty acid and stable isotope analyses. Low relative proportions of Phaeophyta fatty acid trophic markers (i.e. 20:4(n-6), 18:3(n-3) and 18:2(n-6)) in consumers (3.3−8.9%), as well as low 20:4(n-6)/20:5(n-3) ratios (<0.1−0.6), indicated that Phaeophyta were poorly used by macro- zoobenthos as a food source, either fresh or as detritus. -

Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

Charles J. Gabriel, Honorary Associate in Gonchology, National Museum of Victoria. Introduction. It has always been my conviction that the spasmodic and haphazard collecting so far undertaken has not exhausted the molluscan species to be found in the deeper waters of South- eastern Australia. Only two large single collections have been made; first by the vessel " Challenger " in 1874 at Station 162 off East Moncoeur Island in 38 fathoms. These collections were described in the " Challenger " reports by Rev. Boog. Watson (Gastropoda) and E. A. Smith (Pelecypoda). In the latter was included a description of a shell Thracia watsoni not since taken in Victoria though dredged by Mr. David Howlett off St. Francis Island, South Australia. In 1910 the F. I. S. " Endeavour " made a number of hauls both north and south of Gabo Island and off Cape Everard. The u results of this collecting can be found in the Endeavour " reports. T. Iredale, 1924, published the results of shore and dredging collections made by Roy Bell. Since this time continued haphazard collecting has been carried out mostly as a hobby by trawler fishermen either for their own interest or on behalf of interested friends. Although some of this material has reached the hands of competent workers, over the years the recording of new species has probably been delayed.
