GENERAL INTRODUCTION The following systematic revisions of New Zealand taxa within the Arionacean subfamilies F l ammulininae Climo, 1969, Otoconchinae Cockerell, 1893 and Endodontinae Suter, 1913 (family Endodontidae Pilsbry, 1894) are based on quantitative reappraisals of shell morphology and studi es on radular and soft-part morphology. The last major revision of these New Zealand pulmonate taxa was presented by Suter (1 913) i n hi s Manual of the New Zealand Mollusca, and illustra ted in hi s Atlas of Plates which appeared in 1915. Suter' s work was, as were the great majority of earlier pulmonate systematic studies, based on studies of shell and radular morphology, and was the major contribution towards the erection of a systematic hierarchy which illustrated the indigenous nature of the New Zealand endodontid fauna. -

7. IMPACTS OF ALIEN LAND ARTHROPODS AND MOLLUSKS ON NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS IN HAWAIfI Francis G. Howarth ABSTRACT Over 2,000 alien arthropod species and about 30 alien non-marine mollusks are established in the wild in Hawai'i, While the data are too meager to assess fully the impacts of any of these organisms on the na- tive biota, the documentation suggests several areas of critical concern. Alien species feed directly on na- tive plants or their products, thus competing with na- tive herbivores and affecting host plants. Alien pred- ators and parasites critically reduce the populations of many native species and seriously deplete the food resources of native predators. Some immigrant species spread diseases that infect elements of the native bio- ta. Others are toxic to native predators. There is also competition for other resources, such as nesting and resting sites. Even apparently innocuous intro- duced species may provide food for alien predators, thus keeping predator populations high with an atten- dant greater impact on native prey. Control measures targeted at alien pests may be hazardous to natives. Mitigative measures must be based on sound research and firmer understanding of the complex interactions and dynamics of functioning ecosystems. Strict quarantine procedures are cost effective in preventing or delaying the establishment of potential pests. Strict control or fumigation is needed for nonessential importations (such as cow chips, Christmas trees, and flowers in bulk). Improved review of introductions for biological control is required in order to prevent repeating past mistakes. Biocontrol introductions must be used only for bona fide pests and used in native ecosystems only in special circumstances. -

Afonso3, and Rafael Zardoya1 1Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC), Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biologia Evolutiva 2Universidad de Cadiz, Departamento CMIM y Química Inorgánica – Instituto de Biomoléculas (INBIO) 3Universidade do Algarve, Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) Cone snails form one of the most diverse families of marine animals, including more than 900 species classified into almost ninety different (sub)genera. Conids are well known for being active predators on worms, fishes, and even other snails. Cones are venomous gastropods, meaning that they use a sophisticated cocktail of hundreds of toxins, named conotoxins, to subdue their prey. Although this venom has been studied for decades, most of the effort has been focused on Indo-Pacific species. Thus far, Atlantic species have received little attention despite recent radiations have led to a hotspot of diversity in West Africa, with high levels of endemic species. In fact, the Atlantic Chelyconus ermineus is thought to represent an adaptation to piscivory independent from the Indo-Pacific species and is, therefore, key to understanding the basis of this diet specialization. We studied the transcriptomes of the venom gland of three individuals of C. ermineus. The venom repertoire of this species included more than 300 conotoxin precursors, which could be ascribed to 33 known and 22 new (unassigned) protein superfamilies, respectively. Most abundant superfamilies were T, W, O1, M, O2, and Z, accounting for 57% of all detected diversity. -

Here we describe two morphs from the complex as new species. Using morphological comparisons, we show the new species to be closely related but distinct from each other and from M. brockii. Distributed across north-western Australia, M. ffo sp. nov. is known from Exmouth, Western Australia to the Wessel Islands, Northern Territory, whereas M. hermanita sp. nov. is known only from Madang, Papua New Guinea. Differences between the two species include colouration, the size of the receptaculum seminis and some distinction in the jaws. Unravelling the entire complex will take much wider geographic sampling, and will require recollection from the type locality of M. brockii. This group is yet another example of a purportedly widespread aeolid species comprising a complex of species. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – The coast of the Western Australian Kimberley boasts an archipelago that comprises several hundred large islands and thousands much smaller. While the non–marine gastropod fauna of the Kimberley mainland has been surveyed to some extent, the fauna of these islands had never been comprehensively surveyed and only anecdotal and unsystematic data on species occurrences have been available. During the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation’s Kimberley Island Survey, 2008–2010, 22 of the largest islands were surveyed. Altogether, 17 species of terrestrial non–camaenid snails were found on these islands. This corresponds to about 75% of all terrestrial, non–camaenid gastropods known from the entire Kimberley region. In addition, four species of pulmonate freshwater snails were found to occur on one or more of four of these islands. Individual islands harbour up to 15, with an average of eight, species each. Species diversity was found to be higher in the wetter parts of the region. -
Observations on the Native Land Mollusca of Taranaki
TANE 20 1974 OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATIVE LAND MOLLUSCA OF TARANAKI By P.G. Parkinson* SUMMARY The author's recent collections of land snails from parts of Egmont National Park reveal a total of 40 species of which 22 are new records for Taranaki and three are putative new species (not herein described). When earlier publications of the mollusca of Taranaki are taken into consideration the local fauna is found to consist of 65 recorded species. The commonest species found in the author's montane collections appear to be Charopa pseudoleioda, Ch. reeftonensis, Laoma regularis and Paralaoma sericata "brown", which appear in almost two-thirds of all the samples. Other common species are Ch. wairarapa (a new record), Laoma mariae, Obanella rimutaka and O. spectabilis (both new records) and a putative new species Paralaoma "roseate". The only common native slug is Athoracophorus bitentaculatus rufovenosus. The discovery of the interesting "Egmont Paryphanta" is described and the known collections traced. PREVIOUS LAND SNAIL COLLECTIONS FROM TARANAKI Land Mollusca seem to have been first collected in Taranaki by Mr R. Murdoch of Wanganui who published some of his findings9 and by Preston (published by Sykes14). Most of Murdoch's collection was destroyed by fire sometime before 1913 but duplicates of most of his species were in the collection of Suter (formerly at Wanganui but now in the National Museum, Wellington), and these specimens are the basis of the records made by Suter in his Manual13. These collections furthermore provide the distribution records for Climo5'6 in his review of the New Zealand Charopids.
