1 the Middle Ages
THE MIDDLE AGES 1 1 The Middle Ages Introduction The Middle Ages lasted a thousand years, from the break-up of the Roman Empire in the fifth century to the end of the fifteenth, when there was an awareness that a ‘dark time’ (Rabelais dismissively called it ‘gothic’) separated the present from the classical world. During this medium aevum or ‘Middle Age’, situated between classical antiquity and modern times, the centre of the world moved north as the civil- ization of the Mediterranean joined forces with the vigorous culture of temperate Europe. Rather than an Age, however, it is more appropriate to speak of Ages, for surges of decay and renewal over ten centuries redrew the political, social and cultural map of Europe, by war, marriage and treaty. By the sixth century, Christianity was replacing older gods and the organized fabric of the Roman Empire had been eroded and trading patterns disrupted. Although the Church kept administrative structures and learning alive, barbarian encroachments from the north and Saracen invasions from the south posed a continuing threat. The work of undoing the fragmentation of Rome’s imperial domain was undertaken by Charlemagne (742–814), who created a Holy Roman Empire, and subsequently by his successors over many centuries who, in bursts of military and administrative activity, bought, earned or coerced the loyalty of the rulers of the many duchies and comtés which formed the patchwork of feudal territories that was France. This process of centralization proceeded at variable speeds. After the break-up of Charlemagne’s empire at the end of the tenth century, ‘France’ was a kingdom which occupied the region now known as 2 THE MIDDLE AGES the Île de France. -

I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes. -

When Two Become One: Sacramental Woes And Theological Anxiety In Medieval Representations Of Marriage Abstract This dissertation traces the long, winding, and problematic road along which marriage became a sacrament of the Church. In so doing, it identifies several key problems with marriage’s ability to fulfill the sacramental criteria laid out in Peter Lombard’s Sentences: that a sacrament must signify a specific form of divine grace, and that it must directly bring about the grace that it signifies. While, on the basis of Ephesians 5, theologians had no problem identifying the symbolic power of marriage with the spiritual union of Christ and the Church, they never fully succeeded in locating a form of effective grace, placing immense stress upon marriage’s status as a signifier. As a result, theologians and canonists found themselves unable to deal with several social aspects of marriage that threatened this symbolic capacity, namely concubinage and the remarriage of widows and widowers. -

Il me semble utile cependant de faire le point sur les re- cherches consacrées à ce fragment de geste à l'aide d'une bibliographie an- notée suivie d'un essai d'explication sur les différentes thèses soutenues. Le Manuscrit A. Il n'existe qu'un seul manuscrit de ce texte, celui de la bi- bliothèque royale de Belgique, portefeuille II, 181. Il a été découvert dans une ancienne reliure par Monseigneur de Ram, en 1837, et déposé à la bibliothèque royale en 1875. Il consiste en deux feuilles de parchemin, donnant quatre feuillets de 209 x 145 mm. qui contiennent chacun deux colonnes par page. Le cou- teau du relieur a coupé le haut de la feuille extérieure enlevant ainsi le premier vers de chaque colonne. Les initiales des laisses sont alternative- ment rouges et vertes. L'écriture du manuscrit est datée du XIIIe siècle. Le texte est en anglo-normand. B. Wolfgang G. van Emden "E cil de France le cleiment a guarant": Roland, Vivien et le thème du guarant The following paper, which was read at the Sixth International Congress of the Société Rencesvals at Aix-en-Provence in August 1973, will appear also in the Acts of that Conference, which are being edited by the Université de Provence, and are expected to appear at the end of 1974. I should add that when writing this paper I did not have avail- able to me the article of Professor William W. Kibler, "Roland's Pride," (Symposium, 26 [1972], pp. 147-160). Professor Kibler has since had the kindness to send me a copy of his article which I would certainly have quoted in reference to the "third school" discussed in my own paper. A preliminary note of this kind is not, of course, the place in which to reply to another scholar's study; I must limit myself to stating that, in spite of the balanced and moderate arguments put forward by Prof. Kibler, I do not find myself in agreement with him on his basic con- clusions, and that I think many of the points he raises are in fact envisaged and covered in the paper which follows. The Illuminated Manuscripts of the Légende Dorée: Jean de Vignay's Translation of Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda Aurea Hilary Elizabeth Maddocks Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Fine Arts The University of Melbourne 1989 ABSTRACT This thesis considers closely 28 illuminated manuscripts of Jean de Vignay’s translation of Jacobus de Voragine’s celebrated 13th-century compendium of saints’ lives, the Legenda aurea. Vignay’s translation, the Légende dorée, poses some particular problems for manuscript studies. The extant manuscripts can be seen to be accommodated by at least two major genres of medieval French illumination: the transition of vernacular, courtly literature and the tradition of devotional texts. The tension created by these two conventions can be reconciled if we regard the Légende dorée manuscripts as enjoying popularity with an elite and secular audience which was not interested in the text as much as it was interested in the illuminations, or more probably, in the status of owning an important scholarly illuminated work. In establishing appropriate genres for the manuscripts of the Légende dorée, the production of the books within the organised artistic workshop is explored. This has led to the conclusion that while in some cases compositions were freshly devised from the text of the Légende dorée, most illuminators relied heavily on standard workshop models and patterns. As well as attempting to place the manuscripts of the Légende dorée in the milieu of late medieval France and as well as seeking to explore the popularity – or at least the level of ownership – of this translation of a somewhat irrelevant and difficult philosophical work, the thesis also presents for the first time an annotated catalogue of all known manuscripts of the text. -

University of Cambridge Faculty of English Romance Motifs and Ethics in Malory’s ‘Book of Sir Tristram’ Suxue Zhang Magdalene College Supervisor: Dr James Wade This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, June 2017 Dissertation Title: Romance Motifs and Ethics in Malory’s ‘Book of Sir Tristram’ Name: Suxue Zhang Summary Sir Thomas Malory’s ‘Book of Sir Tristram’, a condensation of the Old French Tristan en prose, has not received the attention it deserves. Previous studies notice the two texts’ differences in characterisation, style, moral emphasis, structural arrangements, and so on, but no study has sufficiently demonstrated the overall strategy and the moral purposes behind Malory’s changes. This thesis offers an evaluation of both texts’ approaches to some ethical questions, including identity, violence, justice, and passion, through a close analysis of their presentation of romance motifs. The comparison draws on traditional treatments of these motifs and reveals that the authors of romance can incorporate stratified perspectives to voice ideological interpretations. Malory’s treatment of the moral discourse in the ‘Tristram’ articulates the chivalric ideal in the characters’ expressions of how they understand identity, honour, courtesy, courage, faithfulness, justice, compassion, and love. This analysis shows how Malory renews the meaning of the romance motifs borrowed from his sources by changing the characters’ response to the ethical problems underlying the archetypal actions. Thus, Malory’s narrative generates experiential edification, as it engages the reader in the active moral evaluation of the events. Keller The Song of Roland: a Mid-Twelfth Century Song of Propaganda for the Capetian Kingdom For more than a century now scholars have been discussing the Oxford version of the Song of Roland. It is thus scarcely surprising that all of those who have dealt with the poem have been intrigued as to the authorship of such an incomparable masterpiece, nearly classical in its structure. But it seems even more important to understand its signifi- cance and to define the audience to whom the poet is speaking, as well as to discover the message he wants to convey. For this purpose, it is most vital to know when the Oxford version of the poem was composed. If that problem can be solved satisfactorily, we will know more about the man who signed the Oxford version, Turoldus, and, further, the dispute as to whether or not the different parts of the work constitute later inser- tions can be resolved without undue difficulty. This paper, therefore, will examine the factors which help determine the date of the version preserved in the Oxford manuscript, and we will also propose a possible new solution to the problem. For the dating of the Oxford Roland, it is not without interest that one finds all combatants using the spear in what Dorothy Leigh Sayers1 terms "the modern fashion (escrime nouvelle): the spear is held firmly under the right arm, with the point directed at the adversary's breast, the aim being either to pierce him through, or to hurl him from the saddle by weight and speed as the horses rush together."
