The traditional narrative of French literary history describes the vernacular canon as built on the imitation of the ancients. However, this dissertation demonstrates that Early Modern French canon formation also depends, to a startling extent, on claims of inter-vernacular literary theft. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a central preoccupation of French authors, translators, and literary theorists was the repatriation of the romance genre. Romance was portrayed as a cornerstone of French literary patrimony that Italian and Spanish authors had stolen. The repatriation of individual romance texts entailed a skillful co-opting of the language of humanist philology, alongside practices of translation and continuation usually associated with the medieval period. By looking at romance translation as part of a project of national canon formation, this dissertation sheds new light on the role that chivalric romance plays in national and international politics.

    The Migration of Literary Ideas: The Problem of Romanian Symbolism Cosmina Andreea Roșu ABSTRACT: The migration of symbolists’ ideas in Romanian literary field during the 1900’s occurs mostly due to poets. One of the symbolist poets influenced by the French literature (the core of the Symbolism) and its representatives is Dimitrie Anghel. He manages symbols throughout his entire writings, both in poetry and in prose, as a masterpiece. His vivid imagination and fantasy reinterpret symbols from a specific Romanian point of view. His approach of symbolist ideas emerges from his translations from the French authors but also from his original writings, since he creates a new attempt to penetrate another sequence of the consciousness. Dimitrie Anghel learns the new poetics during his years long staying in France. KEY WORDS: writing, ideas, prose poem, symbol, fantasy. A t the beginning of the twentieth century the Romanian literature was dominated by Eminescu and his epigones, and there were visible effects of Al. Macedonski’s efforts to impose a new poetry when Dimitrie Anghel left to Paris. Nicolae Iorga was trying to initiate a new nationalist movement, and D. Anghel was blamed for leaving and detaching himself from what was happening“ in the” country. Susan Elizabeth Farrier, Ph.D. Cornell University, 1985. ANY SCHOLARS state as a truism that the Oxford Chanson de Roland M was written sometime around 1100. This date is misleading not only because it is artificially precise, but also because it suggests that the whole poem was composed all at the same time. Linguistic dating, however, re- veals vestiges of a tenth-century poem, as well as significant portions of eleventh- and twelfth-century redactions. These three linguistic strata are fairly evenly distributed throughout the poem — even in the so-called "Baligant episode." Linguistic dating essentially consists of two steps: (1) identifying the Latin forms of the Old French words found at the assonance and (2) de- termining the stage of development which the stressed vowel in each Old French word must have reached in order to assonate properly with all other verse-final words in the laisse. When the various strata are analyzed for stylistic consistency, the re- sults are surprisingly convincing.     A Book of Words Created and edited by David TriPPett SongFest 2008 A Book of Words The SongFest Book of Words , a visionary Project of Graham Johnson, will be inaugurated by SongFest in 2008. The Book will be both a handy resource for all those attending the master classes as well as a handsome memento of the summer's work. The texts of the songs Performed in classes and concerts, including those in English, will be Printed in the Book . Translations will be Provided for those not in English. Thumbnail sketches of Poets and translations for the Echoes of Musto in Lieder, Mélodie and English Song classes, comPiled and written by David TriPPett will enhance the Book . With this anthology of Poems, ParticiPants can gain so much more in listening to their colleagues and sharing mutually in the insights and interPretative ideas of the grouP. There will be no need for either ParticiPating singers or members of the audience to remain uninformed concerning what the songs are about. All attendees of the classes and concerts will have a significantly greater educational and musical exPerience by having word-by-word details of the texts at their fingertiPs. It is an exciting Project to begin building a comPrehensive database of SongFest song texts. SPecific rePertoire to be included will be chosen by Graham Johnson together with other faculty, and with regard to choices by the Performing fellows of SongFest 2008.     Éphéméride année 1660 Chronologie moliéresque : les « Éphémérides » de François Rey (1658-1669) François Rey a établi ces « éphémérides » lorsqu'il préparait son livre intitulé Molière et le roi. L’affaire Tartuffe (avec Jean Lacouture) paru aux éditions Fayard en 2006), ce qui explique qu'il les ait interrompus à la fin de l’année qui a vu la création publique de Tartuffe après presque cinq années d'interdiction. Il a eu la générosité de mettre à notre disposition cet inestimable instrument de travail, nous autorisant en même temps à le diffuser plus largement selon le moyen qui nous paraîtrait le mieux approprié. Nous le publions donc sur le site MOLIÈRE 21, après avoir simplement adapté la mise en pages (passée du mode « paysage » au mode « portrait ») et supprimé, comme il nous l'avait demandé, ceux de ses commentaires personnels qui constituaient des jalons d’attente pour une recherche plus approfondie (« à développer », « à confirmer », etc.).
