NORTHERN DANCER, in good order to gain a contending position along the inside, continued to save ground while under snug restraint, moved up steadily after six furlongs, but was forced to come out midway of the second turn, responded to gain command a quarter out and prevailed under strong left-handed whipping. HILL RISE, unhurried, was bumped twice through the stretch run the first time, continued along the outside thereafter to commence a rally at the half-mile ground, lost additional ground in a wide spread leaving the backstretch, rallied to strong handling on entering the stretch and was slowly getting to the winner. THE SCOUNDREL broke in stride, swerved out to bump with HILL RISE in the run to the initial turn, continued in a forward position to gain command between calls on the second turn and weakened gradually through the closing drive. ROMAN BROTHER, allowed to settle in stride, commenced to advance along the inner railing after seven furlongs and finished strongly even though in slightly close quarters. QUADRANGLE, brushed and squeezed back at the start, wanted for racing room entering the first turn, continued well to the top of the stretch where he lacked a closing rally. MR. BRICK broke alertly but sharply to the outside brushing with QUADRANGLE, continued to make the pace under good rating and gave way suddenly after going a mile. MR. MOONLIGHT swerved to the outside for no apparent reason nearing the half-mile ground and could not threaten thereafter. DANDY K. was outrun, as was ISHKOODAH. WIL RAD was through early. ROYAL SHUCK showed speed for three-quarters and stopped badly. 138 nominations. LUCKY DEBONAIR broke alertly to show the way through the opening furlong, dropped back a bit when Shoemaker took a snug hold nearing the sixteenth marker, moved up again to engage FLAG RAISER midway of the first turn, continued to duel with that one while along the outside to the final quarter where he moved to the fore when sharply roused, moved off to a lengthy advantage through the upper stretch but was fully extended to turn back a belated bid from DAPPER DAN. The latter, away slowly and unhurried for six furlongs, moved up along the inside on leaving the backstretch, angled out sharply to launch his closing rally on the final turn and, responding to strong handling, was slowly getting to the winner. TOM ROLFE, in hand for a half-mile, moved up boldly along the inside to engage the top flight at the half-mile ground, dropped back a bit on rounding the second turn only to come again while under extreme pressure and finished gamely. NATIVE CHARGER, bumped while between horses entering the first turn, quickly recovered to remain in contention while along the outside to loom menac- ingly on the stretch turn and finished evenly in a good effort. HAIL TO ALL, slow to begin as usual, launched a rally on rounding the second turn and finished boldly while between horses through the closing drive. MR. PAK finished well, SWIFT RULER failed to reach contention. FLAG RAISER came out soon after the start to bump with CARPENTER’S RULE but was quickly straightened away to take a clear lead in the initial run through the stretch, came to the inside thereafter to be well-rated only to weaken badly through the closing drive. CARPEN- TER’S RULE was bumped soon after the start and failed to reach contention.

Incentive Program_Cat 18_Page 1 CALIFORNIA’S INCENTIVE PROGRAM IT PAYS TO BREED AND OWN A CALIFORNIA-BRED In 2017, the breeders and owners of California-bred Thoroughbreds and the owners of California-based stallions received over $12M in premiums through the California Incentive Program. In addition, special racing opportunities afforded California-breds in 2017, provided more than $20M in purses for races restricted to California-breds. As a result of legislation recently amended in 2009, total monies available for incentive awards are distributed as follows: 10% to the California-bred race fund; 15% to the Maiden Bonus program: 20% bonus on the winner’s share to the owner of a California-bred Thoroughbred horse conceived by a registered eligible Thoroughbred stallion that finishes first in an open qualifying race, and a 10% bonus on the winner’s share to the owner of a California-bred Thoroughbred horse that finishes first in an open qualifying race that was not conceived by a registered eligible Thoroughbred stallion. The tracks are adding an additional 10% for Cal-bred winners of allowance races making the bonus 30%. A qualifying race is all non-claiming races excluding stakes with a purse of at least $15,000, as are open non maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. After these deductions, 75% of the remainder to be paid as breeder awards, and 25% of the fund to be paid as stallion awards.

    Old Friends Afternoon Deelites 1992 dkb/br H Private Terms – Intimate Girl (Medaille d’Or) Afternoon Deelites descends from Damascus on his sire’s side and Secretariat on his dam’s. Raced by composer Burt Bacharach and conditioned by Richard Mandella, the West Virginia- bred went from his victorious first start right into stakes company, polishing off The Hollywood Prevue Breeder’s Cup (G3), then drawing away from Thunder Gulch to take the G1 Hollywood Futurity. At three, Afternoon Deelites continued his winning streak in the San Vicente (G3) and stretching out to two turns in the San Felipe (G2). He prevailed in the Malibu S (G1) at Santa Anita, and at four won the Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup H at Keeneland. Always piloted by Kent Desormeaux, Afternoon Deelites earned $1,061,193 lifetime and won 7 of his 12 starts. He stood at Airdre Stud for much of his breeding career, then at Clear Creek Stud in Louisiana. Old Friends is grateful to Val Murrell of Clear Creek for the privilege of retiring him to our Kentucky farm. Has to be respected as Aidan O'Brien's sole representative. 2. SEALIWAY - Second in the G3 Prix la Rochette over course and distance beaten 1L. The fourth has boosted this form since winning at Listed level. 3. LAWS OF INDICES - Failed to gain a clear run when seventh beaten 5.75L in the G1 1400m Vincent O'Brien National Stakes in Ireland. Previously a G2 winner and could be worth another try. 4. CAIRN GORM - Sixth beaten 5L in the G2 Mill Reef Stakes over 1200m at Newbury. Stepping up in trip. 5. NANDO PARRADO - Second in the G1 Prix Morny over 1200m at Deauville beaten 2L. Previously won the G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and holds big claims. 6. LIBERTINE - Won first two career outings before being beaten 2L into fourth in the G3 Prix d'Aumale over 1600m. Proven stamina may be a positive in this. Summary NANDO PARRADO (5) won the G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on his second outing. Backed that up when runner-up in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville over 1200m. Sets the standard despite rise in distance. ST MARK'S BASILICA (1) produced a career best effort when third in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National Stakes over 1408m at the Curragh. Top claims. SEALIWAY (2) managed to deliver a good effort when second at course and distance in the G3 Prix la Rochette.

    Old Friends A P Valentine 1998 b H A. P Indy – Twenty Eight Carat (Alydar) On February 14, 1998, Alydar’s daughter Twenty Eight Carat delivered a special valentine, a handsome bay son by A. P. Indy. He was raced by former University of Kentucky Wildcats coach Rick Pitino’s Ol’ Memorial Stable (then called Celtic Pride Stable), and it’s not hard to guess why they named him A P Valentine. A grandson of Seattle Slew and great-grandson of Secretariat, he raced from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. At two he won the 2000 Champagne Stakes. At three he was a favorite for the Kentucky Derby, and in both the 2001 Preakness and Belmont Stakes he finished second to Point Given. Eventually retired with $864,170 earnings, he began an enthusiastically heralded breeding career at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, but—ironically for a horse named Valentine—he proved infertile. Reproductive specialist Dr. Phillip McCarthy restored a measure of fertility and at Watercress Farm in Kentucky, then Cedar Creek Farm in Texas, A P Valentine sired 28 registered foals. 21 of them became racehorses, and two, A P Valor and Ifonlyjohnny, earned more than $100,000 apiece.
