Afternoon Deelites 1992 Dkb/Br H Private Terms – Intimate Girl (Medaille D’Or) Old Friends Afternoon Deelites 1992 dkb/br H Private Terms – Intimate Girl (Medaille d’Or) Afternoon Deelites descends from Damascus on his sire’s side and Secretariat on his dam’s. Raced by composer Burt Bacharach and conditioned by Richard Mandella, the West Virginia- bred went from his victorious first start right into stakes company, polishing off The Hollywood Prevue Breeder’s Cup (G3), then drawing away from Thunder Gulch to take the G1 Hollywood Futurity. At three, Afternoon Deelites continued his winning streak in the San Vicente (G3) and stretching out to two turns in the San Felipe (G2). He prevailed in the Malibu S (G1) at Santa Anita, and at four won the Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup H at Keeneland. Always piloted by Kent Desormeaux, Afternoon Deelites earned $1,061,193 lifetime and won 7 of his 12 starts. He stood at Airdre Stud for much of his breeding career, then at Clear Creek Stud in Louisiana. Old Friends is grateful to Val Murrell of Clear Creek for the privilege of retiring him to our Kentucky farm. Afternoon Deelites’ top progeny were graded stakes winners Zappa, Three Hour Nap and Miss Pickums, but he also has the rare distinction of having sired a movie star—our very own Seabiscuit ―actor,‖ Popcorn Deelites. Old Friends A P Valentine 1998 b H A. P Indy – Twenty Eight Carat (Alydar) On February 14, 1998, Alydar’s daughter Twenty Eight Carat delivered a special valentine, a handsome bay son by A. P. Indy. He was raced by former University of Kentucky Wildcats coach Rick Pitino’s Ol’ Memorial Stable (then called Celtic Pride Stable), and it’s not hard to guess why they named him A P Valentine. A grandson of Seattle Slew and great-grandson of Secretariat, he raced from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. At two he won the 2000 Champagne Stakes. At three he was a favorite for the Kentucky Derby, and in both the 2001 Preakness and Belmont Stakes he finished second to Point Given. Eventually retired with $864,170 earnings, he began an enthusiastically heralded breeding career at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, but—ironically for a horse named Valentine—he proved infertile. Reproductive specialist Dr. Phillip McCarthy restored a measure of fertility and at Watercress Farm in Kentucky, then Cedar Creek Farm in Texas, A P Valentine sired 28 registered foals. 21 of them became racehorses, and two, A P Valor and Ifonlyjohnny, earned more than $100,000 apiece. Many thanks to Dr. William Day, veterinarian and owner of Cedar Creek Farm, for A P Valentine’s retirement to Old Friends. If you would like a share in this horse, you may complete the form below. In return, you will receive an 8 ½ x 11 color photograph of A P Valentine and a Share Certificate. Mail bottom of form and _________________________ check to: Name I would like ______share(s) _________________________ in A P Valentine @ $100 per Old Friends Address share.

NAITC 2015 Conference Pre-Conference Tour Tuesday, June 16, 2015 Heart of the Bluegrass Time: 7:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Maximum: 43 persons per coach Price: $155 Thoroughbred Center The Thoroughbred Center is located in Fayette County, Kentucky, just outside the city limits of Lexington. Built in 1969, and formally named the Kentucky Horse Center was originally situated on 133 acres of prime central Kentucky farmland. Established as a Thoroughbred training and sales facility by Rex Elsworth and Dr. Arnold Pessin, KHC was immediately popular as an alternative to training at the local racetracks. Amenities at the training facility included a 5/8-mile track with a metal roof, two barns made primarily of concrete with metal roofs that could house up to 260 horses and had 40 tack rooms and a state of the art, 920 seat sales pavilion, complete with a lounge and full service bar. The Thoroughbred Center is nestled among the most lavish horse farms in Lexington. Our tour offers a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the care and training of Thoroughbreds like no other. During the tour, you will get to watch, at rail side, morning workouts of Thoroughbred horses; see horses up close at trackside, the paddocks and barns; visit with a horse owner/trainer who will answer questions; learn how Thoroughbred horses are trained for racing; experience a typical day in the life of a racehorse; learn why and how Central Kentucky came to be the Horse Capital of the World. Keeneland Located in the heart of Kentucky’s famed Bluegrass region, Keeneland plays an important role in both Thoroughbred racing and breeding.

Old Friends Danthebluegrassman 1999 ch G, Pioneering – Stay with Bruce (Grey Dawn) Dan’s life has been a roller coaster. Sired by the royally bred Pioneering (a son of Mr. Prospector and Secretariat’s magnificent daughter Terlingua), Dan was bred by Ledgeland Farms and sold by consignor Dan Mallory to Michael Pegram. Named after Las Vegas raconteur Dan Chandler (son of Governor, Senator and Baseball Commissioner A. B. “Happy” Chandler and uncle of U. S. Representative Ben Chandler) and trained by Bob Baffert, the big chestnut colt certainly began his career among powerful names. As a 2 year old he won the Gold Rush Stakes in wire-to-wire fashion. As a 3 year old he took the 2002 Derby trail via a win in the Golden Gate Derby (G3) and a close second in the El Camino Derby, scoring the earnings to run in the Kentucky Derby. As it turned out, Dan was scratched out of the Derby, but in June he captured the Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs. For the next six years Dan continued racing, but eventually, his best racing behind him, he descended through the claiming ranks. In early 2008 Jim Ponte and Tim Ford expedited his retirement to Old Friends. Dan’s return to Kentucky was celebrated at the Old Friends 2008 Homecoming, where the Gallatin County Youth Bluegrass Band performed their “Ballad of Danthebluegrassman,” and he was honored at the National Bluegrass Festival at the Kentucky Horse Park. His roaming days now done, Dan has settled contentedly into life at Old Friends. His gentle disposition and gleaming chestnut coat have made him a big favorite with kids and adults alike.
