Davis has worked internationally in financial, strategy and sustainability consulting, serving some of the largest private and public companies globally. He has also worked in economic development-focused roles in the South African government, with a focus on the role of innovation in promoting economic and social development. In his current role as CEO of RIIS, Davis aims to use open innovation approaches to stimulate and consolidate the national system of innovation in South and Southern Africa. Abstract: Open Innovation activities embedded in Triple Helix collaborations are a potential source of economic growth. Two triple helix projects in Southern Africa are evaluated by analysing their influence on the creation of social capital, network expansion, firm resilience and knowledge and technology transfer. There is evidence that open innovation in triple helix configurations contributes to technological development , but only under specific circumstances. It was found that low absorptive capacity of firms and bad IP regimes negatively affects direct technology transfer. Keywords: Open Innovation; Economic development; Triple Helix; Namibia; South Africa 9 1. Introduction Copious amounts of research has been done thus far on the drivers of economic growth. Various models attempt to describe it and policies aim to stimulate growth through diverse avenues. Comparatively little has been done to measure the direct influence of open innovation on economic growth. In this paper two Triple Helix Projects are analysed in terms of their economic impact with a specific focus on the open innovation within them. The first of these is a collaboration between multiple government entities, academic institutions and an industry partner with the goal of economic development in Southern Africa. A web-based open innovation broadcast platform was used to source and disseminate technology throughout the region. This collaboration spanned several countries including South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia and was analysed in terms of its macro-economic impact. The second triple helix collaboration is smaller than the first, consisting of a single industry-university-government coupling. The aim of the collaboration is to develop the necessary tools for the effective management of open innovation in Southern Africa. The bulk of the collaboration outcome is localised within the boundaries of the industry partner. This partnership is analysed from the perspective of the micro-economic impact of open innovation, through triple helix collaboration, on small firms. The authors have searched through the literature and could not find a satisfactory paper describing the direct influence of open innovation on economic growth. Many periphery studies exist (see section 2) that describe the performance contribution of Open innovation within the firm but these do not go past mentioning innovation as an economic driver. One aim of this paper is to begin to address this shortcoming in the literature. The two triple helix collaborations are analysed by assessing five possible ways they could potentially contribution to economic growth. These five methods of economic growth contribution are: a. The creation of social capital through network expansion; b. Increased firm resilience; c. Fostering of human capital through knowledge transfer; d. Improved competitive advantage through knowledge and technology absorption; and e. Multi-factor growth through NSI collaborations. It is concluded that Open Innovation contributes to economic growth through all of the above stated avenues, but to varying degrees. The configuration and specific aims of a Triple Helix configuration shape the effect it has on organisations. Small firms with limited absorptive capacity draw little value from intermediated technology transfers; larger firms, with a greater absorptive capacity and available finances, can use it as an effective means to absorb external technology and so expand their competitive edge. 10 2. Theoretical Background The national state of innovation South Africa is a upper middle income country with some industries, infrastructure and capabilities that are on par with first world standards. On the other hand poverty, stable power supply and education are retardant factors in South Africa's development. The Global Innovation Index ranks South Africa as the 53rd most innovative country out of 142 with a score of 38.2, as calculated from key economic indicators. To put this into context consider that Switzerland, the first ranked country on the list, has a score of 64.8. South Africa's score is thus about 60% of that of the most innovative country. Compared to the other BRICS countries South Africa is more innovative than Brazil

ORCID: 0000-0002-5479-7073 - 1 - ABSTRACT The predominant structural protein in vertebrates is collagen, which plays a key role in extracellular matrix and connective tissue mechanics. Despite its prevalence and physical importance in biology, the mechanical properties of molecular collagen are far from established. The flexibility of its triple helix is unresolved, with descriptions from different experimental techniques ranging from flexible to semirigid. Furthermore, it is unknown how collagen type (homo- vs. heterotrimeric) and source (tissue-derived vs. recombinant) influence flexibility. Using SmarTrace, a chain tracing algorithm we devised, we performed statistical analysis of collagen conformations collected with atomic force microscopy (AFM) to Our results show that types I, II and III collagens the key fibrillar varieties exhibit molecular flexibilities that are very similar. However, collagen conformations are strongly modulated by salt, transitioning from compact to extended as KCl concentration increases, in both neutral and acidic pH. While analysis with a standard worm-like chain model suggests that the persistence length of collagen can attain almost any value within the literature range, closer inspection reveals that this modulation to changes in flexibility, but rather arises from the induction of curvature (either intrinsic or induced by interactions with the mica surface). By modifying standard polymer theory to include innate curvature, we show that collagen behaves as an equilibrated curved worm-like chain (cWLC) in two dimensions.

Since non-proline amino acids weaken the triple helix, the cyclic structure of proline has been considered necessary, and functional collagen mimetic peptides (CMPs) with diverse sidechains have been difficult to produce. Here we show that N-substituted glycines (N-glys), also known as peptoid residues, exhibit a general triple-helical propensity similar to or greater than proline, allowing synthesis of thermally stable triple-helical CMPs with unprecedented sidechain diversity. We found that the N-glys stabilize the triple helix by sterically promoting the preorganization of individual CMP chains into the polyproline-II helix conformation. Our findings were supported by the crystal structures of two atomic-resolution N-gly-containing CMPs, as well as experimental and computational studies spanning more than 30 N-gly-containing peptides.

Rogers,c Yonggang Huangb and Yihui Zhang *a A variety of natural biological tissues (e.g., skin, ligaments, spider silk, blood vessel) exhibit ‘J-shaped’ stress–strain behavior, thereby combining soft, compliant mechanics and large levels of stretchability, with anatural‘strain-limiting’ mechanism to prevent damage from excessive strain. Synthetic materials with similar stress–strain behaviors have potential utility in many promising applications, such as tissue engineer- ing (to reproduce the nonlinear mechanical properties of real biological tissues) and biomedical devices (to enable natural, comfortable integration of stretchable electronics with biological tissues/organs). Recent advances in this field encompass developments of novel material/structure concepts, fabrication ap- proaches, and unique device applications. This review highlights five representative strategies, including de- signs that involve open network, wavy and wrinkled morphologies, helical layouts, kirigami and origami constructs, and textile formats. Burnaby, BC, V5A 1S6 Canada [email protected] Abstract The primary building block of the body is collagen, which is found in the extracellular matrix and in many stress-bearing tissues such as tendon and cartilage. It provides elasticity and support to cells and tissues while influencing biological pathways including cell signaling, motility and differentiation. Collagen’s unique triple helical structure is thought to impart mechanical stability. However, detailed experimental studies on its molecular mechanics have been only recently emerging. Here, we review the treatment of the triple helix as a homogeneous flexible rod, including bend (standard worm-like chain model), twist, and stretch deformations, and the assumption of backbone linearity. Additionally, we discuss protein- specific properties of the triple helix including sequence dependence, and relate single-molecule mechanics to collagen’s physiological context. Introduction Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, accounting for more than 30% of the total protein.1,2 Collagens are defined by their unique right-handed triple helical structure, comprised of three left-handed polyproline-like helices, each with a (Gly-X-Y) repeating sequence where X and Y are often proline and hydroxyproline.2 In the body, collagen forms ordered, hierarchical
