Z významných historických udalostí sprítomňujeme 90. výročie vzniku našej alma mater – Univerzity Komenského v Bratislave a príspevkom o osudoch niekoľkých osobností katolíckeho disentu zasa dvadsiate výročie novembrových udalosti v roku 1989. Osobitnú pozornosť sme venovali aj životným jubileám významných spolupracovníkov Studia Academica Slovaca – dlhoročnému lektorovi a prednášateľovi na našej letnej škole a členovi Vedeckého grémia Studia Academica Slovaca profesorovi Jánovi Sabolovi a dlhoročnému lektorovi a prednášateľovi letnej školy – docentovi Miloslavovi Darovcovi. Na záver sme zaradili osobnú výpoveď bývalého veľvyslanca Slovenskej republiky v Českej republike a spisovateľa Ladislava Balleka o vzájomných česko-slovenských kultúrnych kontaktoch. Zborník ako celok svojou reprezentatívnou a pestrou skladbou štúdií a príspevkov výberovo sprístupňuje adresátom z radov študentov slovenčiny, domácich a zahraničných slovakistov a slavistov i všetkých záujemcov o slovenčinu a slovakistiku aktuálne výsledky príslušných vedných odborov na Slovensku a zároveň podáva istý obraz o stave vedeckého myslenia v oblasti filologických a spoločenskovedných disciplín u nás. • Prisoners of Their Generation
Prisoners of their Generation RUDOLF CHMEL I would like to begin this article on a personal note since Albín Bagin (1939 - 1982) was, with Ivan Kadlečík, my closest friend for more than a quarter of a century. On one occasion, in April 1968, he wrote to me (his letters were veritable micro-reviews ): "I have just seen the third issue of Mladá tvorba 1 and realized that we had an agreeable meeting on the pages of this magazine. Although our pieces are very different, I feel a kind of spiritual connection between us." I felt something that Ivan Kadlečík recently described when writing about the three ofus: "We had no need to seek one another out because [ ... ] we found one another a long tíme ago, when we met at university in the 1950s." And he adds: "At that time we were already writing to each other in the summer vacations." We might say that Ivan took up the epistolary genre programmatically, for he says: "when people stop writing to each other, as happens so often today, history slows down and soon it will cease to exist." (From this point ofview, even I am ceasing to exist, even though I try at least to call Ivan regularly, because it is quite impossible to force him to text me.) Albín, who was also a keen letter writer, has an important place in my memory, which I have revisited for this occasion, and re-read his letters. I regret that unfortunately not all ofthem are at my disposal. Be that as it may, letters served as an important medium of communication in the late l 950s and early l 960s, however old-fashioned that might seem today.

  • The Character of the Russian in Slovak War-Themed Literature1
Acta Slavica Iaponica, Tomus 34, pp. 49‒67 The Character of the Russian in Slovak War-Themed Literature1 Jana Kuzmíková INTRODUCTION The image of the Russian and Russia in Slovak literature has not been a subject of scholarly analysis to date, even though the issue of Slovak-Rus- sian relations has been under scrutiny by several scholars, most recently in the monograph Slovensko-ruské vzťahy a súvislosti [Slovak-Russian relations in context].2 The more specific topic of Russian literary influence on Slovak writ- ing received intense attention in Slovak literary scholarship between the two world wars. The most significant expert in the field is Andrej Mráz (1904–1964), who continued his research into the 1950s. His inter-war and post-war stud- ies were published in the monograph Z ruskej literatúry a jej ohlasov u Slovákov [On Russian literature and its reception by the Slovaks].3 The work of Mráz was continued, among others, by Andrej Červeňák (1932–2012) in the 1960s. Červeňák’s long-term research focused on the influence of Dostoevskii on Slo- vak writers as well as the Slovak reception of other great Russian writers, such as Tolstoi, Turgenev, Lermontov, Pushkin, Yesenin, and others. In terms of Slovak-Russian relations, his most important monographs are Človek v liter- atúre [Man in literature]4 and Russkaia literatura v slovatskom vospriiatii [Russian literature in Slovakian perception].5 Besides numerous analyses of the pres- ence of Russian literature in Slovak literature and culture, there are also many studies on translations

  • On Television and Totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia
Reviews Reviews between Democracy and Nazism, ‘the main act’ named Television Should Serve the Communist Ideology, and ‘coda’ called Towards Public Service. The book consists of 14 chapters. We strongly On Television and Totalitarianism appreciate seven ‘contextual boxes’, which offer the reader an introduction into wider political and cultural contexts of the discussed eras; naturally, mainly in relation to television. The text also in Czechoslovakia includes a rich collection of visual elements and images documenting the evolution of television as a technological means of communication, its key products and leading personas. Particularly interesting ŠTOLL, M.: Television and Totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia. From the and useful parts are the list of archival sources, the register of the body of primary and secondary First Democratic Republic to the Fall of Communism. New York, London : scholarly literature on the given issue and the list of titles of the periodical press mentioned in the texts. Bloomsbury Academic, 2019. 279 p. ISBN 978-2013-2475-8. The index of mentioned names and television products (programmes, films) is present as well. As the publication’s main title suggests, the author’s aim is to reflect on the development of Ján Višňovský television and its products in the context of the then social establishment. Czechoslovakia was a democratic and sovereign state during the so-called First Republic (1918 – 1938), for three years Television as a medium is a really noteworthy technological invention, which significantly after the Second World War (1945 – 1948) and after the fall of communism (1989 – 1992). • History of Slovak Literature
A History of Slovak Literature In spite of its richness and long history, Slovak literature is one of the least-known Slavic literatures in the English-speaking world. Few trans- lations of Slovak works exist and until now there has been no systematic English-language history of this field. A History of Slovak Literature pro- vides an excellent introduction to this important but overlooked body of writing. Starting with the Great Moravian period, Peter Petro surveys one thousand years of Slovak literature. He examines the medieval, renais- sance, baroque, classical, romantic, realist, and modern periods and highlights the contributions of such writers as Nedozersky, Tranovsky, Papanek, Safarik, Kollar, Zaborsky, Vajansky, Hviezdoslav, Kukucm, Hronsky, Tatarka, and Rufus. Like Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian writing, Slovak literature tran- scended the merely literary to become an influential political and cul- tural tool: Slovak writers and poets played an important role in promoting and protecting the culture and language of their people against invading cultures. A History of Slovak Literature will be a welcome addition to the field of Slavic studies. INTRODUCTION This paper resulted from an attempt to explore factors determining or underlying the "Marxification" of Slovak literature after 1945-- an attempt moti vated by a hunch that certain Marxist-Leninist prin ciples had provided a different insight into Slovak literature from that provided by the liberal, demo cratic "aesthetic appreciation" s~hool of criticism in prewar Czechoslovakia. • Reading Slovakia SLOK LITERTURE in CZECH PUBLISHING HOUSES
ReaDINg SlOvakIa SLOK LITERTURE IN CZECH PUBLISHING HOUSES INTRODUCTION ooking into a subject of the relationship Lbetween Czechs and Slovaks in the field of book culture, which has not been fully addressed yet, we aim to add to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia by displaying the exhibition ‘Reading Slovakia’. The emphasis is laid on the greatest feats of 1918-1939: large publishing projects; series of books devoted to Slovak creation; important books appearing during the First Republic or instantly after it went out of existence. The focus is given on Czech publishers who would publish Slovak literature in their original versions. As a result of not having them translated from one language into another, they respected official ideology of one shared Czechoslovak language in two variants – Czech and Slovak – so helped become Czech readers acquainted with Slovak literature and culture. Czech books had been read in Slovakia for long; however, Czech readers had not been used to reading Slovak books let alone buying them. Thus, Czech publishers and their established distribution networks helped interest in Slovak books arouse and be kept in Moravia and Bohemia. Still they had been filling more roles. Some of the Czech publishing circles would even occupy a formative role in Slovakia, where the conservative book market found it complicated to adapt to changed conditions after 1918. In particular, it was their concern in young Slovak creation and disseminating world literature books translated into Slovak language that helped create conditions for original artistic creation. What’s more, Slovak books would appear abroad owing to Czech publishers and their contacts.
