KR. A BITKA PRI MEGALOPOLE JURAJ HRICA HRICA, J.: Spartan Resistance against the Macedonian Hegemony in Greece during Alexander’s Persian Campaign in 334-331 BC and the Battle of Megalopolis. Vojenská história, 4, 22, 2018, pp 7-51, Bratislava. To this day, the expedition of Alexander the Great against Persia is perceived in military knowledge as one of the most fascinating events not only in the ancient history but human history in general. The personality and deeds of the young king became legendary during his life already, with stories motivated mostly by glorifi cation but sometimes also dehonestation of his personality. In the traditional view of his unprecedented success, the defeat of Persia, which used to be a clear power “number one” and Alexander’s progress through Asia, might seem somehow linear, clear, “textbook”, and therefore also distant. In my contribution, following analysis of the available sources, I would like to stress that this was not so clear-cut and Alexander was, remotely from his home background, mainly through his otherwise competent regent Antipater, confronted with a rough situation because the Spartan King Agis III concocted a rebellion against the Macedonian dominion. However, this was only the peak of the events unfolding following Alexander’s fast progress along the coast and inland of Asia Minor - the Persians and collaborating Greeks prepared signifi cant obstacles to Alexander and his forces. The importance of Agis’ rebellion was accentuated mainly by Ernst Badian and his study on the personality and resistance of this Spartan King continued to be the basis for other researchers. Through summing up the fi ndings, this article is aimed at contributing to the understanding and interpretation mainly of the chronological ambiguities of the so called Agis’ War and the Battle of Megalopolis itself, which is based on inconsistent testimonies of the main sources (Diodoros, Justinus, Curtius Rufus, Addianos). Military history. Ancient times. Alexander the Great, Agis III., Ancient Macedonia, Ancient Sparta, Battle of Megalopolis in 331 BC.

He said, “we lack a film in our cinema that would show the audience the heroic campaign of the Legionnaires and their fundamental influence on the recognition of Czechoslovakia. It is one of the brightest points in our modern history, deserving of a high-quality film adaptation.

What is the “general course“ of Russian for eign policy? It was already clearly formulated in 1917 by the second greatest hangman of the regime, Leo Bronstein-Trotsky. His motto was: “neither peace nor war“! Trotsky was murdered, but his murderers continue to pursue his policy. They do not venture to start a war between the states, but, on the other hand, they do not want peace or a stabili zation, either.

  • Prisoners of Their Generation
Prisoners of their Generation RUDOLF CHMEL I would like to begin this article on a personal note since Albín Bagin (1939 - 1982) was, with Ivan Kadlečík, my closest friend for more than a quarter of a century. On one occasion, in April 1968, he wrote to me (his letters were veritable micro-reviews ): "I have just seen the third issue of Mladá tvorba 1 and realized that we had an agreeable meeting on the pages of this magazine. Although our pieces are very different, I feel a kind of spiritual connection between us." I felt something that Ivan Kadlečík recently described when writing about the three ofus: "We had no need to seek one another out because [ ... ] we found one another a long tíme ago, when we met at university in the 1950s." And he adds: "At that time we were already writing to each other in the summer vacations." We might say that Ivan took up the epistolary genre programmatically, for he says: "when people stop writing to each other, as happens so often today, history slows down and soon it will cease to exist." (From this point ofview, even I am ceasing to exist, even though I try at least to call Ivan regularly, because it is quite impossible to force him to text me.) Albín, who was also a keen letter writer, has an important place in my memory, which I have revisited for this occasion, and re-read his letters. I regret that unfortunately not all ofthem are at my disposal. Be that as it may, letters served as an important medium of communication in the late l 950s and early l 960s, however old-fashioned that might seem today.
