I can still talk to her about anything.” This year Shyla was selected to attend the Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Summit 66% in Ottawa on Parliament Hill, where youth from across Canada came together to voice their views on social change. At the summit, Shyla discussed her passion for mentoring and how it has positively impacted her life. She too, wishes to become a Big Sister in the future. Soon she found herself looking forward to Friday mornings when she could see Olivia. From cookies to badminton to Uno, Gisele’s dedication to share meaningful time with Olivia is evident. They feel valued for their individual gifts and strengths, set realistic expectations for themselves and others and develop problem solving skills to manage future challenges. A mentor can play an important role in shaping these positive qualities in children and youth as they mature and move into adulthood.
