SEPTEMBER 10 - 14, 2014 CALGARY, ALBERTA Photo: Neil Zeller UPFRONT GET TO KNOW CALGARY A WELCOME FROM MAYOR NAHEED NENSHI: I was just a few months old when my parents made the decision to settle in Calgary. In the early 1970s it was difficult to imagine that Calgary would grow into the global city it is today. Over the past few years, Calgary has been named by several publications as one of the best places in the world to live. It doesn’t take long to see why. Most people know Calgary as the centre of Canada’s energy industry, as the closest metropolitan centre to the Rocky Mountains and as the home of the world-renowned Calgary Stampede. Calgary is definitely all of those things, but it’s also so much more. We have a young, dynamic population bursting with creativity. Calgarians bring their innovative ideas to all areas of industry, from the arts to technology to investment to energy. We have a spirit that fosters entrepreneurship — where people aren’t afraid to try new things. In Calgary, “energy” refers to more than oil and gas or wind and solar; it is an attitude that permeates every quadrant of our city. As those of us who are fortunate enough to live here know, Calgary offers a lifestyle like no other. We have access to hundreds of recreational opportunities, and we make a point of taking advantage of them. It’s not hard to leave work early to go skiing or kayaking when there are hills and rivers and cross-country trails within city limits. We have an extensive pathway system, and a visit to any of our urban parks will show you just how much Calgarians enjoy the outdoors. Our support for the arts has helped grow Calgary’s cultural offerings into some of the best you will see anywhere in Canada. If you consider yourself a “foodie,” prepare to be impressed with the quality of our restaurants and our thriving year-round farmers’ markets. Our retail sector continues to grow, and we have hundreds of local shops and boutiques. But what really sets us apart is our community spirit. We readily give our time and money to our fellow citizens in need. We take care of each other, not because we’re asked to, but because we know that it’s the right thing to do. Life in Calgary puts a spotlight on just a few of the many things that make our city among the best in the world. Come. Be part of the energy. • The Future of 16 Avenue N.W. - Explore Phase Stakeholder Report Back: What We Heard October 2020 - January 2021
The Future of 16 Avenue N.W. - Explore Phase Stakeholder Report Back: What We Heard October 2020 - January 2021 Project overview 16 Avenue N.W. has a dual nature as both a major city-wide transportation corridor and as a community Main Street that has successfully nurtured a local commercial core in Montgomery for decades The 16 Avenue N.W. corridor from Sarcee Trail to Crowchild Trail requires a coherent planning effort due to the widely variable nature of the corridor today, with differing road classifications, land use, posted speed limits, number of lanes, accommodation of transit and active modes, and levels of planning and construction in recent years. Provision of additional capacity and ultimate build-out of the roadway to three core lanes in each direction is expected to fulfill 16 Avenue N.W.’s role as a primary transportation and goods movement corridor, and to support area growth. Within Montgomery along 16 Avenue N.W., a streetscape master plan will incorporate what is most important today and in the future about the main street experience with a focus on social and healthy lifestyles, mobility and functionality, character and identity, and economic vitality. The City will work with stakeholders and the public to gather feedback to develop design concepts, success criteria, a recommended corridor plan for 16 Avenue N.W. between Sarcee Trail and Crowchild Trail, and a Streetscape Master Plan for 16 Avenue N.W. in the community of Montgomery. As both the timing and location of these two studies are so close together, The City is seeking key stakeholder and public input for the two projects through a joint engagement process.

Aishwarya Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals Abstract: Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) (Fingerroot), formerly known as Boesenbergia or Kaempferiapandurata (Roxb). Schltr. (Zingiberaceae), is distributed in south-east Asian countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The rhizomes of this plant have been used for the treatment of peptic ulcer, as well as colic, oral diseases, urinary disorders, dysentery and inflammation. As people have started to focus more on natural plants species for their curative properties. B. rotunda is a native ingredient in many Asian countries and is used as a condiment in food. It is also used as traditional medicine to treat several illnesses, consumed as traditional tonic especially after childbirth, beauty aid for teenage girls, and as a leukorrhea preventive remedy for women. Its fresh rhizomes are also used to treat inflammatory diseases, in addition to being used as an antifungal, antiparasitic, and aphrodisiac among Thai folks. Moreover, AIDS patients self-medicate themselves with B. rotunda to cure the infection. With the advancement in technology, the ethnomedicinal usages of herbal plants can be explained through in vitro and in vivo studies to prove the activities of the plant extracts. The current state of research on B. rotunda clearly shows that the isolated bioactive compounds have high potential in treating many diseases.
