To my great surprise (and pleasure) the specimen was a black witch moth (BWM) (Ascalapha odorata (Linnaeus 1758)), marking only the second occasion in over 50 years of living in the province that I had seen one FIGURE 1. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties.

Rahman Syed and M. Lee Goff2 Abstract. Otopheidomenis ascalaphae is described as new from specimens taken from a noctuid moth, Ascalapha odorata (Linnaeus), collected on Oahu I, Hawaiian Islands. A key to the species of Otopheidomenis is given. Treat (1955) proposed the family Otopheidomenidae and the genus Otopheidomenis to accommodate a single species, 0. zalelestes, collected from a noctuid moth. Sub­ sequently, 8 additional species of Otopheidomenis were described by Prasad (1968, 1970a, 1970b, 1972, 1973), only 1 of which, 0. treati (Prasad, 1968), was reported from a noctuid. The remaining 7 species were all described from sphingid moths. With the description of the new species below, the number of species in the genus is raised to 10 and a 3rd species is described from a noctuid. The holotype is in the collection ofthe B.P. Bishop Museum (BPBM) and paratypes are there and in the collections of the U.S. National Museum of Natural History/ Smithsonian Institution and the Acarology Laboratory, Ohio State University, Co­ lumbus. Palabras clave: Erebus, mariposa de la muerte, polilla. Abstract. The presence of Ascalapha odorata (L.) in Central Chile is documented for the first time, from a specimen collected in Santiago city. Key words: Erebus, black witch, moth. Ascalapha odorata (Linnaeus, 1758) es una especie de lepidóptero que tiene una amplia distribución en el continente americano; ha sido recolectada desde Canadá hasta Argentina, encontrándose también presente en Hawái, donde fue introducida, islas del Caribe, Ecuador (Galápagos), Venezuela, Brasil, Perú, Paraguay, Bolivia y Chile; sin embargo, su rango de distribución natural estaría restringido a América Central, México y el sur de Estados Unidos de América (Angulo y Jana-Sáenz 1983; Ekrem et al. 2014; Hayes 1975; Philippi 1870; Ureta 1936). En Norteamérica, esta especie realiza migraciones estacionales a regiones más frías durante el verano, mientras que, en América del Sur se mueve hacia regiones andinas y hacia el sur; no obstante, sería incapaz de establecerse en estos lugares, aunque estén presentes sus hospederos vegetales, pues sus larvas serían intolerantes a periodos prolongados de frío (Ekrem et al.
