2011 THE MICHIGAN BOTANIST 1 EDWARD G. VOSS (1929 –2012) Anton A. Reznicek and Richard K. Rabeler University of Michigan Herbarium 3600 Varsity Drive Ann Arbor, MI 48108-2228 Edward Groesbec k Voss (Fig. 1), Professor and Curator Emeritus at the Uni - versity of Michigan Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Uni - versity of Michigan Herbarium, died on February 13, 2012 at his home in Ann Arbor, after a brief illness. He was born on February 22, 1929 in Delaware, Ohio. Ed’s abilities were clear early in his life. He attended Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio. He received the Achievement Award as the outstanding senior in his 1946 high school class, and was later elected to the Woodward High Hall of Fame. He then graduated with a bachelor’s degree with honors from Denison University (1950); his undergraduate honors thesis, On the classifica - tion of the Hesperiidae , became a significant paper on Lepidoptera (Voss 1952). He completed his education with a master’s in Biology (1951) and a doctoral de - gree in Botany (1954), both from the University of Michigan working with Rogers McVaugh. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Denison University in 2003. In 1956, he began his long association with the University of Michigan and Michigan’s flora when he was appointed as a research associate at the Herbar - ium, beginning what was expected to be a five-year project to document the flora of Michigan. He joined the Botany faculty in 1960 as assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor (1963), and later, professor (1969). -

WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Summer 2019 in 2018, I Did Not Encounter Meloe Strigulosus Often; in Fact I Only Remain Recognizable
Volume 201 9 Number 2 Bulletin of the Summer 201 9 Oregon Entomological Society Observations of Meloe strigulosus (Coleoptera: Meloidae) Ron Lyons In late December 2017, I began a study of the life cycle of the franciscanus. Last year I reported the presence of Meloe franciscanus chrysomelid beetle, Galeruca rudis, which feeds on lupines (Lyons found on 2 occasions (February 23 and March 10, 2018), both in 2019). the same area (Lyons 2018). I did not see the species this year. Here I report on my observations of Meloe strigulosus. This ongoing study is being carried out in Bullards Beach State Park just north of Bandon in Coos County, Oregon. New Business: Radovsky summarized a letter from the Dir. of Nat'l Marine Fisheries Service informing the HES that we can no longer hold our meetings in their facilities. After discussing other possible sites it was decided to continue to meet at the Bishop Museum until favorable ar rangements could be made at another locality. Notes and Exhibitions Agraulis vanillae (L.): The passion vine butterfly, Agraulis vanillae (L.) was collected for the first time in Hawaii on January 14, 1977, indepen dently by Arakaki and Beardsley from Manoa Valley. Their notes follow for this new state record. Three adult specimens of Agraulis vanillae (L.) were collected on January 14, 1977 in lower Manoa, Oahu. Two females and one male were feeding on star jasmine, Jasminum multiflora. On January 15, 1977 two male specimens were taken feeding on Bougainvillea in the same area. Search for immature forms yielded several eggs and a single larva feeding on a bud ofPassiflorafoetida. At the same time five empty pupal cases were taken. -
