During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Nomura URBAN NATURALIST Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs Ayako Nagase1,*, Yoriyuki Yamada2, Tadataka Aoki2, and Masashi Nomura3 Abstract - Urban biodiversity is an important ecological goal that drives green-roof in- stallation. We studied 2 kinds of green roofs designed to optimize biodiversity benefits: the Harappa (extensive) roof and the Biotope (intensive) roof. The Harappa roof mimics vacant-lot vegetation. It is relatively inexpensive, is made from recycled materials, and features community participation in the processes of design, construction, and mainte- nance. The Biotope roof includes mainly native and host plant species for arthropods, as well as water features and stones to create a wide range of habitats. This study is the first to showcase the Harappa roof and to compare biodiversity on Harappa and Biotope roofs. Arthropod species richness was significantly greater on the Biotope roof. The Harappa roof had dynamic seasonal changes in vegetation and mainly provided habitats for grassland fauna. In contrast, the Biotope roof provided stable habitats for various arthropods. Herein, we outline a set of testable hypotheses for future comparison of these different types of green roofs aimed at supporting urban biodiversity. Introduction Rapid urban growth and associated anthropogenic environmental change have been identified as major threats to biodiversity at a global scale (Grimm et al. 2008, Güneralp and Seto 2013). Green roofs can partially compensate for the loss of green areas by replacing impervious rooftop surfaces and thus, contribute to urban biodiversity (Brenneisen 2006). -

They are belonging to the family Pseudococidae (5 species) and Monophlebidae (19 species). Among these Dysmicoccus brevipes, Dysmicoccus neobrevipes and Geococcus coffeae were three root mealybug species recorded. Associate incidence was found among certain species range i.e., Ferrisia virgata, Paracoccus marginatus, Pseudococcus longispinus, Icerya seychellarum and Coccidohystrix insolita from different spots of the district. Anoplolepis gracilipes and Solenopsis geminata and Oecophylla smaragdina were ants observed with different mealybugs colony. E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Ornidia Lepeletier & Serville is an endemic New World genus that now comprises five described species. The genus is reviewed and Ornidia therezinhae sp. n. is described and figured from Brazilian Amazon. A key to all species is provided. Key words: Hover flies, Eristalinae, Cyclorrhapha, Neotropical Region, Brazil Introduction The family Syrphidae, commonly called flower flies or hover flies, has a worldwide distribution and consists of about 6,000 described species with representatives occurring in all zoogeographical regions (Thompson et al. 1976, Thompson 2008). The Neotropical region is by far the richest with more than 1,600 species belonging to 60 genera (Thompson 1999), but a large fraction of this fauna remains uncollected and undocumented. The genus Ornidia Lepeletier & Serville comprises medium to large flies (2.3–4.2 mm) with green or purple metallic colors, except O. whiteheadi Thompson that shows a distinctive coppery irridescence abdomen; and they look like superficially some blowflies (Calliphoridae) or orquid-bees (Euglossa). According to Thompson (1991, 2008) Ornidia is a member of the tribe Volucellini and the genus can be characterized mainly by following synapomorphy: notopleuron greatly enlarged and produced posteriorly and face with medial and two sublateral tubercles.
