Four species are omitted as they need to be described in the context of a revision (three Cheilosia and a Palpada species) and three other species (one Neoascia and two Xylota) will be described by F. Christian Thompson in a planned publication. Six of the new species have been recognised for decades and were treated by J. Richard Vockeroth in unpublished notes or by Thompson in his unpublished but widely distributed "A conspectus of the flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) of the Nearctic Region". Five of the 11 species were discovered during the preparation of the Field Guide. Eight of the 11 have DNA barcodes available that support the morphology. Helophilus Affinis, a New Syrphid Fly for Belgium (Diptera: Syrphidae)

La répartition de l’espèce en Europe de l’Ouest est discutée. Introduction Over the last 20 years, the list of Belgian syrphids on average has grown by one species each year (V AN DE MEUTTER , 2011). About one third of these additions, however, is due to changes in taxonomy i.e. they do not indicate true changes in our fauna. Among the other species that are newly recorded, we find mainly xylobionts and southerly species expanding their range to the north. -

A NEW GENUS OF MICRODONTINE FLIES (DIPTERA: SYRPHIDAE) WITH NOTES ON THE PLACEMENT OF THE SUBFAMILY BY F. CHRISTIAN THOMPSON I discovered the following new genus of Syrphidae while reviewing the Neotropical Microdontinae. I had planned to put aside its de- scription until my study of the subfamily was finished. However, publication of a second species, assignable to it by van Doesburg (1966) has necessitated publishing a name now for this genus so that it can be included in the Catalog of South American Diptera. Paragodon, new genus Very small (4-5 mm.) microdontine flies. Face simple (slightly produced in paragoides); cheeks absent, eyes bordering on the oral opening; eyes dichoptic in both sexes; occiput evenly developed. An- tennae short, about one-half as long as face; aristae short and thick- ened. Thorax about as long as broad; pleura bare except mesopleura pilose and meta.pleura with microscopic, pile; scutellum without apical spines and fringe; metasterna undeveloped and bare; metathoracic spiracles without hair fringes. Legs simple, with no basal setal patches on the femora and with cicatrices only on the hind femora. Vings without the spurious vein, with all apical crossveins straight. Abdomen oval, lateral margins slightly emarginate and rolled under ventrally, with ISt sternite bare and st spiracles without hair fringes. The objective of the present investigation (CAU-Imphal) Meghalaya, India was focused on the assessment of the diversity and abundance of hoverfly at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam during 2015-16. A total of 225 individual hoverflies were recorded during the Kennedy Ningthoujam study out of which 23 species belonging to 16 genera under 2 sub-families viz., Eristalinae and Syrphinae College of Post Graduate Studies were observed. Among them, ten species viz., Eristalinus tristriatus, Eristalis tenax, Eristalodes paria, in Agricultural Sciences, Umiam (CAU-Imphal) Meghalaya, India Lathyrophthalmus arvorum, Lathyrophthalmus megacephalus, Lathyrophthalmus obliquus, Phytomia errans, Pandasyopthalmus rufocinctus, Metasyrphus bucculatus and Sphaerophoria macrogaster were Mareena Sorokhaibam newly recorded from Assam. Pollinator Portraits 2017 Photos: © Martin C D Speight Text: Martin C D Speight This guide has been assembled by the National Biodiversity Data Centre Pollinator portraits 2017 These portraits are not of bees, but of flies – European hoverflies, to be precise. In the landscape, hoverflies are small and can flit by unobserved. In the portraits we see them larger than life and can examine them at leisure. You are invited to send the portraits to friends and colleagues. Not so well known as bees, hoverflies play their own, and slightly different role in pollination. They are significant pollinators of various fruit trees and some other crops, like oil-seed rape. They also pollinate many wild flowers, including rare species not normally visited by bees. Hoverflies can be found in a very wide range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. As larvae about a third of them feed on greenfly, other plant bugs, or small caterpillars and are recognised as helping to prevent epidemic greenfly infestations in cereal crops like winter wheat. Another equally large group of species is plant-feeding; these hoverflies mine leaves, stem- bases, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs or corms of herb layer plants. The rest of them grow up on a diet of bacteria, algae or other micro-organisms, usually in water or damp situations of some sort. Almost without exception, as adults hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen, visiting the flowers of a very wide range of trees, shrubs and herb layer plants, including pollen-only flowers like those of grasses, sedges, oak trees and poppies. The names of the hoverflies depicted in each portrait, along with brief notes, are included at the end of this document. -

HOVERFLY NUMBER 41 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2006 Dipterists Forum ISSN 1358-5029 As a new season begins, no doubt we are all hoping for a more productive recording year than we have had in the last three or so. Despite the frustration of recent seasons it is clear that national and international study of hoverflies is in good health, as witnessed by the success of the Leiden symposium and the Recording Scheme’s report (though the conundrum of the decline in UK records of difficult species is mystifying). New readers may wonder why the list of literature references from page 15 onwards covers publications for the year 2000 only. The reason for this is that for several issues nobody was available to compile these lists. Roger Morris kindly agreed to take on this task and to catch up for the missing years. Each newsletter for the present will include a list covering one complete year of the backlog, and since there are two newsletters per year the backlog will gradually be eliminated. Once again I thank all contributors and I welcome articles for future newsletters; these may be sent as email attachments, typed hard copy, manuscript or even dictated by phone, if you wish. Please do not forget the “Interesting Recent Records” feature, which is rather sparse in this issue. The genus is reviewed and Ornidia therezinhae sp. n. is described and figured from Brazilian Amazon. A key to all species is provided. Key words: Hover flies, Eristalinae, Cyclorrhapha, Neotropical Region, Brazil Introduction The family Syrphidae, commonly called flower flies or hover flies, has a worldwide distribution and consists of about 6,000 described species with representatives occurring in all zoogeographical regions (Thompson et al. 1976, Thompson 2008). The Neotropical region is by far the richest with more than 1,600 species belonging to 60 genera (Thompson 1999), but a large fraction of this fauna remains uncollected and undocumented. The genus Ornidia Lepeletier & Serville comprises medium to large flies (2.3–4.2 mm) with green or purple metallic colors, except O. whiteheadi Thompson that shows a distinctive coppery irridescence abdomen; and they look like superficially some blowflies (Calliphoridae) or orquid-bees (Euglossa). According to Thompson (1991, 2008) Ornidia is a member of the tribe Volucellini and the genus can be characterized mainly by following synapomorphy: notopleuron greatly enlarged and produced posteriorly and face with medial and two sublateral tubercles. -
