I giardini, in realtà, sono due: uno più o meno immaginario, l’altro pervicacemente reale. Il primo è il giardino dei libri e dei ricordi, quella vagheggiata utopia all’aria aperta, senza moscerini e sempre in fiore, dove la natura risponde ai nostri desideri e noi immaginiamo di sentirci perfettamente a nostro agio. Il secondo giardino è un luogo reale, a Cornwall, nel Connecticut: circa due ettari di terreno collinare roccioso e difficile da gestire, per coltivare il quale mi sto arrabattando ormai da sette anni. Molto separa questi due giardini, tuttavia ogni anno li porto un po’ più vicini a coincidere. Entrambi hanno avuto moltissimo da insegnarmi, e non solo sul giardinaggio. Ho capito subito, infatti, che non avrei imparato a occuparmi molto bene della mia terra se non avessi appreso anche qualche altra cosa: sul ruolo che mi spetta in natura (rientrava nei miei diritti uccidere la marmotta che mi aveva saccheggiato l’orto durante tutta la primavera?); su certi atteggiamenti alquanto peculiari nei confronti della terra, innati negli americani (com’è che i miei vicini nutrono un interesse tanto profondo per le condizioni del mio prato?); sui tormentati confini tra natura e cultura; e sulla nostra esperienza dei luoghi, sulle implicazioni morali della progettazione del paesaggio e su diversi altri temi che il desiderio di raccogliere qualche onesto pomodoro non mi aveva preparato ad affrontare.
