    The “Bloody” Bristol Blenheim Bloody is mostly a British adjective word used to emphasize what they are saying, and it was spoken many times to describe the RAF Bristol Blenheim in the first two years of World War Two. During the British defeat in France in the months of May and June 1940, the RAF Blenheim suffered the highest loss rate, in operations of a similar size, that was ever suffered by the Royal Air Force, and that is the main and only reason for my title page name. When the first Blenheim flew in 1935 it was capable of evading and out distancing the fixed wing undercarriage biplanes then in service with the RAF, and the bomber became a victim of British overconfidence based on the performance for the mid-1930s. Four years later the Blenheim was incapable of evading or fighting off the modern Bf109s and Bf110s of the German Luftwaffe. The 1939 sudden rise of the Luftwaffe was a remarkable German achievement, which has been detailed in hundreds of books, videos, aviation magazines and historical documents. The RAF Blenheim has best been summed up in one book “Tale of a Guinea Pig” by WWII pilot Alan Geoffrey Page. “For the RAF pilots sent to war in ‘Fairey Battles’ and “Blenheims” the best thing to say for them was a quiet ‘Amen.’ By 1939, the Blenheim Mk. IV long nose looked very impressive to the people of Britain painted on a British Post Card, which soon proved to be a lot of war propaganda. The Blenheim Mk. IV was introduced to the public on 20 May 1939.

It is the way we express our cultural differences, our religious differences and our aesthetic differences. We inherit objects and we pass them on to our children. In them we imbue our personal history and link it to something much bigger and more enduring than our own lives. While these personal items may be small, there are objects of larger size and significance which are passed on through society or government or institutions; and very often make up the collections of Museums. As custodians of these objects, Museums serve as the medium through which they are preserved and interpreted. It is not surprising, therefore, that Museums must act as arbiters in disputes over aesthetics, significance and relevance. It is the Museum’s interpretation which determines the final state of the object. The problem with historic objects, for Museums, is that they do not exist purely as an object; but more as a physical representation of the era, society, belief, or event to which they are linked. Whereas the ideal of Conservation is to preserve the materials and the form with minimal intervention; the subjective and the “aesthetic” considerations of preserving and interpreting the objects for the public, are often at odds with this. An archaeological object displayed in an “as found” condition; is much more likely to meet with public acceptance than is an aircraft or a locomotive in a similar condition.

The submarine 1-25 had launched two partially successful seaplane bombing missions over Oregon in September 1942, mere pin pricks, but the long-term objective was to be achieved by free-flying balloons. Thousands of them, made of paper, were to fly at an average altitude of 30,000 feet carrying four small incendiaries and one anti-personnel bomb, dropped sequentially by an altitude regulating device. The campaign finally began in November I 94, because upper air currents between November and March were ideal for the purpose. '02 This time of year was also, of course, the worst for igniting forests, since they were rain soaked or snow covered. The first incidents occurred in the United States in December, and a balloon came down with its payload near Minton, Sask., on I 2 January. Officials, fearing that the balloons might soon be used to transport biological weapons, tried to deny the Japanese all knowledge of the effectiveness of the balloons by instituting tight press censorship. Io3 In Canada the army became the chief co-ordinating agency to deal with Japanese balloons, supported by the RCAF,RCMP, and various research in- stitutions. The RCAF'S job was to shoot down balloons where possible, fly army bomb disposal experts to incident sites, and transport recovered material to Ottawa. The Aircraft Detection Corps had been disbanded on 15 November 194, but the west coast radar stations and filter centres (unlike those in the United States) were still fully operational. Unfortunately they were not much use against these high altitude targets, paper not being a good reflector of radio waves and the metal components being very small.

Antarctica is the last continent where aviation still depends almost entirely on expeditionary airfields and “bush flying,” but change seems imminent. This report describes the history of aviation in Antarctica, the types and characteristics of existing and proposed airfield facilities, and the characteristics of aircraft suitable for Antarctic use. It now seems possible for Antarctic aviation to become an extension of mainstream international aviation. The basic requirement is a well-distributed network of hard-surface airfields that can be used safely by conventional aircraft, together with good international collaboration.
