Compiled by Lincoln Ross Issue No. Issue Date First of Two Months Model compiled by Lincoln Ross currently, issues 226 (Nov. 2005) thru 270 (March 2013) less 228, 234, and 244, plus partial of a couple of earlier issues I've tried to get all the major articles, all the three views, and all the plans. However, this is a work in progress and I find that sometimes I miss things, or I may be inconsistent about what makes the cut and what doesn’t. I tend to leave out ads, announcements that get too close to ads (usually), contest announcements, and such. Contest reports, canone lists, etc. I include. Starting sometime, I think, in 2010, plans were bound into the newsletter. Before that, they came in an envelope with the newsletter but not attached to it, although in the late '80s there weren't so many and they were bound in the newsletter. Or, at least, that's as much as I know from my own collection of newsletters. issue date first span issue no. of two months model name/article title/etc. author/designer inches type comment 169 May-96 boulton paul defiant Tom Nallen 16 pseudo dime scale 169 May-96 sopwith Pup Florent Baecke 13 peanut scale 169 May-96 Lysander 169 May-96 hanriot hd-1 cover amazing, over the top illustration. • The Fairey Rotodyne
THE FAIREY ROTODYNE The Rotodyne represents an entirely new approach to air transport, and its amazing performance is a triumph for the British Au.i4.ii Industry. It is the first true vertical take-off airliner, and is capable of carrying a full load of passengers or freight, operating from airlicUU no larger than two tennis courts. Unlike the conventional helicopter the Rotodyne is economical to operate, and also capable of much hijr.lin speeds and greater range. The prototype Rotodyne, built under a Ministry of Supply contract, first flew on 6th November, 1957, and achieved its first transition to complete autorotative flight in April, 1958. This prototype, the subject of this model, is capable of carrying 48 passengers or five tun» of freight; the eventual production version will be larger, carrying up to 70 passengers or 8 tons of freight, and will be powered by the more powerful Rolls-Royce Tyne engines in place of the present Elands. A striking demonstration of the Rotodyne's performance was given in January, 1959, when it set up a record 191 m.p.h. on a 100 kin closed circuit. This exceeds the previous record by 49 m.p.h.j and is even 29 m.p.h. faster than the previous absolute speed record for heli- copters. This speed, together with the range of 450 miles, to be increased to 650 miles in the developed version, and of course the weighi lifting and vertical take-off performance, puts the Fairey Rotodyne into a class of its own. Already three airline operators have indicated their intention of buying the Rotodyne, and great interest is being shown by civilian and military operators throughout Europe and America.

10/27/2020 Vought - Wikipedia Vought Vought was the name of several related American aerospace firms. These have included, in the past, Lewis and Vought Corporation, Chance Vought, Vought Vought-Sikorsky, LTV Aerospace (part of Ling-Temco-Vought), Vought Aircraft Companies, and Vought Aircraft Industries. The first incarnation of Vought was established by Chance M. Vought and Birdseye Lewis in 1917. In 1928, it was acquired by United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, which a few years later became United Aircraft Corporation; this was the first of many reorganizations and buyouts. During the 1920s and 1930s, Vought Aircraft and Chance Vought specialized in carrier-based aircraft for the United States Navy, by far its biggest customer. Chance Vought produced thousands of planes during World War II, including the F4U Corsair. Vought became independent again in 1954, and was purchased by Ling- Temco-Vought (LTV) in 1961. The company designed and produced a variety of The VE-7 was the first aircraft to planes and missiles throughout the Cold War. Vought was sold from LTV and owned launch from a U.S. Navy aircraft in various degrees by the Carlyle Group and Northrop Grumman in the early 1990s. Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.

Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time.
