Unatoč konstantnom rastu i razvoju, zračni promet u Europi suočava se sa izazovima fragmentiranosti i limitiranosti kapaciteta, čije dostizanje je neminovno u budućnosti. Jačanje integracije i kolaboracije među dionicima u zračnom prometu od ključnog je značaja za postizanje ciljeva efikasnosti i smanjenja troškova, uz istovremeno zadržavanje visoke razine sigurnosti. Istraživanje se koncentrira na stanje i razvoj regije jugoistočne Europe koje je upravo primjer fragmentiranosti i slabe unutarnje povezanosti. Unatoč tome, nakon turbulentne prošlosti i odnosa među zemljama u regiji, otvara se perspektiva za rast i razvoj unutar regije i na europskom tržištu zračnog prometa.
