A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

The Mikado Messenger | Issue No. 66| April 2020 Ian Matthews sanding the filler, on the tender tank, before it is painted - A1SLT Welcome to edition No. 66 of The Mikado Messenger, our monthly eNewsletter which aims to provide a regular progress update on the construction of new Gresley class No. 2007 Prince of Wales. Thanks to our supporters’ continued generosity, over £3.5m has now been donated or pledged – this equates to over 70% of the required £5m. This month see the launch of a brand new club - The Pony (Truck) Club - please see below for more information. Stephenson Engineering Ltd have sent us a fabulous video of the CNC machining programme that will be carried out on the coupling rods - it can be found in the Motion Update section, below. We are following Government guidelines with regards to the coronavirus, and whilst our office-based staff are now working from home, our workshop staff are continuing to work at Darlington Locomotive Works where they are taking all necessary precautions. However, as many of our supporters and volunteers are from vulnerable groups, the Works is currently closed to non-essential staff. In addition, Nene Valley Railway have cancelled all their events until the end of May 2020 so this means we can no longer hold the P2 Roadshow on Saturday 23rd May 2020 and the Supporters’ and Tornado Team day on Sunday 24th May 2020. We are sorry to have to make these changes. We hope you understand that the circumstances are beyond our control and the restrictions are very necessary at this challenging time. -

ARMAMENTS FIRMS, THE STATE PROCUREMENT SYSTEM, AND THE NAVAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN EDWARDIAN BRITAIN Professor Roger Lloyd-Jones History Department, Sheffield Hallam University Dr. Myrddin John Lewis History Department, Sheffield Hallam University This article examines the relationship between Britain’s armament firms and the state’s procurement system, presenting a case for a Naval Industrial Complex (NIC) in the years immediately before the Great War. It argues that in Edwardian Britain a nuanced set of institutional networks were established between the Admiralty and a small elite group of armament manufacturers. The NIC demonstrates the close collaboration between the armament firms supplying the Admiralty and between the Admiralty and an elite group of private contractors. This article concludes that the NIC did not lead to profiteering by contactors, and they did supply the warships and naval ordnance that enabled Britain to out build Germany in the naval race. This paper examines the relationship in Britain between the armaments industry and the military institutions of the state during the years preceding the Great War, when there were intensifying international tensions, and concerns over Britain’s defense capabilities. Through an assessment of the War Office (WO) and Admiralty procurement system, we apply John Kenneth Galbraith’s theory that businesses may establish institutional networks as “countervailing powers” to mediate business-state relations and, thus, we challenge the proposition that the state acted as a “monopsonist,” dominating contractual relations with private armaments firms.’ We argue that during the years prior to the war, Britain’s Naval Industrial Complex (MC) involved a strengthening collaboration between the British Admiralty and the big armament firms. -

The Steam Locomotive Table, v1 If you’re reading this; you either like steam trains, or want to know more about them. Hopefully, either way, I can scratch your itch with this; a set of randomizer/dice-roll tables of my own making; as inspired by some similar tables for tanks and aircrafts. Bear with me, I know not everyone knows the things I do, and I sure know I don’t know a lot of things other train enthusiasts do; but hopefully the descriptions and examples will be enough to get anyone through this smoothly. To begin, you’ll either want a bunch of dice or any online dice-rolling/number generating site (or just pick at your own whim); and somewhere or something to keep track of the details. These tables will give details of a presumed (roughly) standard steam locomotive. No sentinels or other engines with vertical boilers; no climax, shay, etc specially driven locomotives; are considered for this listing as they can change many of the fundamental details of an engine. Go in expecting to make the likes of mainline, branchline, dockyard, etc engines; not the likes of experiments like Bulleid’s Leader or specific industry engines like the aforementioned logging shays. Some dice rolls will have uneven distribution, such as “1-4, and 5-6”. Typically this means that the less likely detail is also one that is/was significantly less common in real life, or significantly more complex to depict. For clarity sake examples will be linked, but you’re always encouraged to look up more as you would like or feel necessary. -

Yeadon London & North Eastern 1847-1997 Railway collection Historical background: Willie Brayshaw Yeadon was born in Yeadon in the West Riding of Yorkshire on 28 June 1907. After his schooldays, he trained to become a mechanical engineer, and started work with Bradford Dyers, but was unfortunately made redundant in 1930 following the onset of terrible trading conditions. In 1931 he joined JH Fenner Ltd in Hull ('makers of improved beltings'), eventually becoming Sales Manager and then Marketing Manager, until his official retirement in 1972. He died at the age of 89 on 16 January 1997 in Hull Royal Infirmary after a short illness. By then he had become probably the country's leading authority on the London & North Eastern Railway and its locomotives. Indeed, Eric Fry, honorary editor of 'Locomotives of the LNER', writing in the 'Railway Observer' in March 1997, described him as possibly 'the foremost locomotive historian of all time'. Willie Yeadon's earliest railway interest had been the London & North Western Railway, with visits and family holidays to Shap summit and Tebay. On his removal to Hull, however, the London & North Eastern Railway became his main preoccupation, and he was particularly inspired by the development and progress of Sir Nigel Gresley's Pacific class locomotives during the 1930s. He began to collect railway photographs in 1933, and continued his interest after railway nationalisation in 1948. The British Railways modernisation programme undertaken from the mid - 1950s prompted him to investigate and record the history of every LNER locomotive. -
