Northumbrian Idyll Text & Photographs: Ian Johnson The recent difficulties in financing a full restoration to working order of Class J21 0-6-0 65033 reminded me of its last working days in 1961 at South Blyth shed. Originally designated Class C by the North Eastern Railway (NER), a total of 201 of these 0-6-0s were built to the design of T. W. (Tommy) Worsdell. Because of his interest in compounding, a total of 171 locomotives were built as 2-cylinder compounds on the Worsdell/ von-Borries principle. Later under his brother Wilson Worsdell, all the compounds were rebuilt as simples. 65033 was one of the original compounds built at Gateshead in 1889 as 876 with Joy’s valve gear. It was later rebuilt in 1908 as a simple with 19in piston valves and Stephenson valve gear to be classed as J21 under the LNER classification. -

Cambrian Railways User Manual
CAMBRIAN RAILWAYS USER MANUAL Introduction Prior to 1923 the Cambrian Railways operated a network of lines in and around Mid Wales, stretching from Whitchurch in Shropshire to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli on the Irish Sea coast. The Cambrian branches extended deep into the rural valleys, while the Cambrian main line climbed to the summit at Talerddig before descending towards the coast. Perhaps most famous of all is the Cambrian Coast line, featured in the earlier 3DTrainStuff route, which follows arguably the most beautiful coastline in Britain. After the 1923 amalgamation, the Cambrian lines formed part of the Great Western Railway and in 1948 they became a rural outpost of the British Railways Western Region. Sadly, it wasn't long before the branch lines were closed followed by parts of the main line and many stations. Today, all that remains of the former Cambrian network is the main line between Welshpool and Aberystwyth plus the coast line to Pwllheli. Access to Welshpool is provided by the former GWR/LNWR line from Shrewsbury. Our Cambrian Railways route includes most of the Cambrian network, with the exception of the main line between Oswestry and Whitchurch. The line from Shrewsbury is also included. The nominal era of the route is 1960, although this hasn't stopped us from including branch lines that closed in the 1950s and the impressive station roof at Shrewsbury. As you will discover, there are plenty of passenger stations and goods sidings, allowing infinite activity possibilities and many enjoyable hours of driving. Station names and spellings Several of the stations on the Cambrian have changed their names or spellings over the past few decades and a decision had to be taken regarding which version of the name to adopt in our route. -

For details about joining the WRRC, contact [email protected] or check the Circle’s web site, wrrc.org.uk Mike Morton Lloyd: A background to the photographs Mike took his first railway photograph on a Summer Saturday in 1947 of a Great Western 2-8-0 as it laboured with a heavy coal train up Llanvihangel Bank. The rest of that day saw him complete his bicycle journey through Abergavenny, Brynmawr, Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon before returning home to Hereford – a distance of some 80 miles! This combination of camera, bike and stamina was to hold him in good stead as he visited and photographed the branch lines around Hereford. Even then it was the Welsh connection, particularly the Mid-Wales line of the Wye Valley that interested him most – thus beginning his long association with all things Cambrian. A move to the Wirral, his marriage to Irene, a honeymoon based in Welshpool (including a brake van ride on the Welshpool and Llanfair), only helped to develop further Mike’s love of all things Cambrian. Many photographic journeys to all parts of the old Cambrian system, especially his beloved Tanat Valley, were made at this time. His return to live in Hereford and his position with the Wye River Board meant that Mike was now able to combine work with pleasure. -
