  • Veronika Pehe Socialism Remembered: Cultural Nostalgia
Veronika Pehe Socialism Remembered: Cultural Nostalgia, Retro, and the Politics of the Past in the Czech Republic, 1989-2014 UCL Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2 I, Veronika Pehe, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the political dimensions of representing history through literature, film, and television, offering a wide-ranging analysis of the cultural responses to the period of state socialism in the Czech Republic after the collapse of the former Eastern Bloc. Unlike in Germany, where the memory of the period from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Berlin Wall has largely been discussed in terms of nostalgia, in the Czech case there is little evidence for nostalgia for either the utopian impulse of the socialist project or its everyday aspects. This research thus challenges nostalgia as one of the main paradigms for the remembrance of the socialist period in the former Eastern Bloc and demonstrates that in the Czech context, an aesthetic fascination with the past is not at odds with, but in fact reinforces an anti-communist rejection of the politics of socialism. My contention is that the object of remembrance in cultural production in the Czech Republic is not the period of state socialism itself, but rather a narrative of its overcoming through resistance and heroism. The retrospective handling of the past through cultural texts and practices hinges on a narrative of progress from the period of socialism to liberal democracy, which ultimately serves to legitimate the present political order.

REVISING THE NATION THROUGH SCHOOLING: CITIZENSHIP AND BELONGING IN SLOVAK TEXTBOOKS, 1918-2005 by Deborah L. Michaels A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Education) in The University of Michigan 2009 Doctoral Committee: Professor Jeffrey E. Mirel, Chair Professor David K. Cohen Professor Michael D. Kennedy Associate Professor Robert B. Bain © Deborah L. Michaels 2009 To Jonathan, My dragon slayer and muse ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Attempting to express in writing the gratitude I feel to family, friends, and colleagues who helped me in completing this dissertation is as daunting in its own way as analyzing over 400 textbooks that were published over the span of nearly a century and written in a language that is not my first. I am bound to leave unnamed some individuals, but I hope they find recognition here in the encompassing spirit of my thankfulness. The last three years of dissertation work have disavowed me of the romantic image of a writer fervently working alone in a room with a view and producing magnificent works. While there were undeniably long hours spent at my desk, vital to my writing process was a network of conversations and interactions with individuals who inspired, sustained, and revitalized me in the task of ―dissertating.‖ Without these individuals, I would not have completed this work. My husband Jonathan, to whom I dedicate this study, provided critical feedback on my writing and sustained me with his cooking, household organization, insistence on days of fun, and, above all, through his enduring love in the face of an often crabby spouse.

  • The Visegrad Dimension of the Czech Republic's Foreign Policy
The Visegrad Dimension of the Czech Republic’s Foreign Policy By Vladislav Strnad Submitted to Central European University Department of Political Science In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Borbála Kovács CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary (2016) Abstract This thesis deals with the importance of the Visegrad relations for the Czech foreign policy (FP). Relations between the Czech Republic (CZ) and the Visegrad countries take place at three main levels: bilateral, regional, and multilateral. These three levels of relations reciprocally interact and complement each other, moreover they form the Visegrad dimension of the CZ’s FP. In this work, the Visegrad policy is examined from the perspective of the Czech interest in this policy. The research is based on the concept of national interest by Kratochvíl (2010). In parallel with the analysis which defines the Visegrad interest as the Czech national interest, this thesis also seeks to specify the content, structure, and the chronology of the changes of Czech interests regarding this policy. The presented analysis confirms that the topic of “Visegrad” is a long-discussed and advocated policy which has been continuously present throughout the entire existence of the independent Czech state. The Visegrad policy affects the process of transformation and integration of the CZ within the region and also in Europe. Moreover, this policy has the support of the Czech policy makers, it is acceptable for the Visegrad states and it is compatible with the national interests of other democratic partners in the European and Euro-Atlantic area. The Czech Visegrad policy corresponds to the Czech national interest, therefore, it is a part of the overall national interest which is the basis for the positionalization of the CZ in the international environment.

CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Political Studies Lukáš Hájek Legislative Behaviour of Deputies in the Czech Republic Dissertation Thesis Prague 2020 Author: Mgr. Lukáš Hájek, M.A. Supervisor: doc. PhDr. Miloš Brunclík, Ph.D. Year of submission: 2020 Bibliographic reference Hájek, Lukáš. 2020. Legislative Behaviour of Deputies in the Czech Republic. Dissertation thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Studies, Prague. Abstract Scrutiny of legislative behaviour of members of parliament (MPs) has a long tradition in Western Europe. Nonetheless, there has been a research gap in the Czech Republic. Thus, the dissertation thesis identifies the most burning and exciting questions and delivers the answers as a collection of to some extent separated but still interconnected studies. To be more specif- ic, I employ quantitative methods of analysis. I deal with the data on all the members of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic who held the mandate between 1993 and 2017. Overall, the original and unique dataset consists of 1,518 legislators and their comprehensive parliamentary activity. The results suggest that two main conflicts drive par- liamentary politics – the institutional division between ruling parties and opposition, and the ideological left-right socio-economic dimension. Besides this, the thesis shows that both the age and tenure of the MPs noticeably affect their parliamentary activity. While older and more experienced MPs propose more bills, address more speeches and obtain more intra- parliamentary posts than young novices, the latter group focuses on the work outside of the parliament. Next, the gender differences in the parliamentary activity of Czech legislators re- semble patterns from Western Europe.
