THE GREEK PRESS AT MALTA OF THE AMERICAN BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FOR FOREIGN MISSIONS (1822 -1833) The first missionaries sent by the American Board of Commis sioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) to their Western Asia or Mediterranean Mission (the area which included the Mission to the Greeks) were the Reverends Pliny Fisk (1792-1825) and Levi Parsons (1792-1822). They left Boston, the Headquarters of the ABCFM, on November 3, 1819 aboard the ship Sally Ann and reached Smyrna in January of 18201. On December 23, 1819 their ship stopped at Malta which was dt the time the center of activity of the English Protestant missionaries, and there they met the Reverend William Jowett, the representative of the Church Missionary Society, the Reverend Samuel Sheridan Wilson, representative of the London Missionary Society and Dr. Cleardo Naudi, a native of Malta and active in the Bible Society which was formed there,by the British missionaries in 1817. These gen tlemen gave the American missionaries information and letters of introduction to influential people in Smyrna and Chios. When they arrived at Smyrna on January 15, 1820 they met the Rever end Charles Williamson, Episcopal minister and chaplain to the British Consulate and to the Levant Company's factory there.2 After discussing their purpose with Reverend Williamson they decided that Smyrna had many advantages to offer for missionary 1. In particular, Local History projects through the Environmental Education optional lessons allow students to approach the past in a more natural way, that is through the study of the sources and first hand material. -

Vamvas thinks that within the borders of this state one can find, in addition to the faithful Orthodox majority, religious minorities that he classifies as “faithless”. How, according to Vamvas, should the faithful Orthodox majority of the Greek State treat these minorities? Vamvas teaches that Greek Orthodox Christians should not hate and persecute their faithless minorities. Rather they should treat them in accordance with the biblical commandment “Love thy neighbour”. According to Vamvas, such love demands that Greek Orthodox Christians work for the conversion of the faithless to Orthodoxy. This seems to suggest that we should think of Vamvas as an advocate of religious intolerance; but this is wrong. Vamvas’ “Love thy neighbour” is – or at least can be interpreted as being – a call for religious toleration. However, it is unlikely that minorities living in a Greek State organised in accordance with Vamvas’ conception of toleration will be happy with their treatment. -

ISSN: 2632-4091 History of Classical Scholarship 22 December 2019 Issue 1 (2019): 94–127 THE LEGACY OF THE DRUNKEN DUCHESS: GRACE HARRIET MACURDY, BARBARA MCMANUS AND CLASSICS AT VASSAR COLLEGE, 1893–1946 — JUDITH P. HALLETT — ABSTRACT This paper builds on a monumental biography published by the Ohio State Uni- versity Press in 2017: The Drunken Duchess of Vassar: Grace Harriet Macurdy, Pioneering Feminist Scholar, by the late Barbara McManus. Macurdy (1866– 1946), who came from a family without social, economic and educational ad- vantages, joined the Classics faculty at the all-female Vassar College in 1893 after receiving BA and MA degrees from Harvard University’s Radcliffe Annex. Following a year studying in Berlin, she received her PhD from Columbia in 1903, and immediately established herself as an internationally renowned Greek scholar, ultimately publishing two groundbreaking books on ancient women’s history. I will contextualize Macurdy’s life and work by looking at evi- dence beyond the purview of McManus’ book about two of Macurdy’s equally illustrious Classics colleagues, who taught with her at Vassar prior to her retirement in 1937 — Elizabeth Hazelton Haight (1872–1964) and Lily Ross Taylor (1886–1969). During the period shortly before the Greek War of Independence, beyond the unique philological expertise of Adamantios Korais, there is additional evidence of the existence of a fledging academic discussion among younger scholars. A younger generation of scholars engaged in new methodological quests in the context of the German school of Alterthumswissenschaft. The urgent priorities of the new state and the fluidity of scholarly fields, as well as the close association of Greek philology with ideology, were some of the factors that determined the “Greek” study of antiquity during the first decades of the Greek state. The rise of classical philology as an organized discipline during the nineteenth century in Greece constitutes a process closely associated with the conditions under which the new state was constructed. This paper will touch upon the conditions created for the development of the discipline shortly before the Greek War of Independence, as well as on the factors that determined its course during the first decades of the Greek State.1 Although how to precisely define classical philology as an organized discipline is subject to debate, our basic frame of reference will be the period’s most advanced “school of philology”, the German school. -
