    m Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht das Werk des türkischen Autors und Übersetzers aus dem Deutschen Sabahattin Ali, der mit seinem Roman KürkI Mantolu Madonna (Die Madonna im Pelzmantel) zu posthumem Ruhm gelangte. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract During the first half of the twentieth century, the ethnically segmented Ottoman empire was transformed into a nation state of Turkish citizens. This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Giirpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Re§at Nuri Guntekin, Halikarnas Bahk9isi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Ya§ar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts.

    Sosyal ve Beşeri Bilimler Araştırmaları Dergisi Güz/Autumn 2018, Cilt/Volume 19 Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities Researches Sayı/Issue 43 The Time Regulation Institute as a Satirical Allegory Hilal KAYA1 Abstract Research Paper This paper focuses on Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s The Time Regulation Institute (1961) as a modern satirical allegory in order to foreground the novel’s critical attitude to the mentality that equates modernization with Westernization. The paper aims to pinpoint that in The Time Regulation Institute Tanpınar intends to shed light on the issue of Turkey’s problematic engagement with modernity and modernization. Unlike A Mind at Peace (Huzur 1949), Tanpınar’s narration in The Time Regulation Institute is not structured around argumentative dialogues between the characters. Rather, the latter depicts Turkey in transformation as a consequence of the project of modernization; more precisely, this study aims to demonstrate that a version of Turkey before, during and after the transformation is humorously displayed. This study aims to contribute not only to the scholarship on Tanpınar’s fiction whose fictional works have rarely been examined as a satirical-allegory but also to the modernity studies. It is the first faculty of the country with the name of The Faculty of Humanities after 1982. The Faculty started its education with the departments of History, Sociology, Art History and Classical Archaeology. In the first two years it provided education to extern and intern students. In the academic year of 1998-1999, the Department of Art History and Archaeology were divided into two separate departments as Department of Art History and Department of Archaeology. Then, the Department of Turkish Language and Literature was founded in the academic year of 1999-2000 , the Department of Philosophy was founded in the academic year of 2007-2008 and the Department of Russian Language and Literature was founded in the academic year of 2010- 2011. English prep school is optional for all our departments.     Peyami Safa’nın Türk Romancılığındaki Yeri Kâzım YETİŞ* ÖZ Türk edebiyatında roman türü çok yeni bir türdür. Dolayısıyla ilk örnekler geleneği olan şiire nispetle dil bakımından çok daha acemicedir. Bu biraz da nesir dilinin hayatı anlatma bakımından yetersiz olmasındandır. Ayrıca Türk dilinin sosyal meseleleri anlatma imkânlarının dar olduğunu da belirtmeliyiz. Bir bakıma nesir dili ile roman dili beraber gelişti. Belki birinin gelişmesi diğerini etkiledi. Bunda Peyami Safa’nın payı büyük olmuştur. Öte yandan sadece dil noktasından değil, ele alınan konular bakımından da roman türünde önemli gelişmeler olmuştur. Başlangıçta son derece dar veya sınırlı konular işlenirken giderek hem ülkenin çeşitli meseleleri kucaklanmış, hem de insan derinlemesine ele alınmış, psikolojik tahliller yapılmış, beşerî alanda ülkeler arası problemler irdelenmiştir. Belki de bu konuda en büyük gelişme Peyami Safa’nın romanlarında görüldüğü gibi çeşitli bilim dallarının romanlarda ele alınmasıdır. Elbette bu konuda Türk romanında en büyük gelişme roman tekniği noktasından olmuştur. ฀emsettin Sami’nin romanı ile Peyami Safa’nın romanları arasındaki teknik fark bu konuyu bize anlatır. Şu hâlde Peyami Safa, Türk romanının dil, muhteva, teknik bakımdan gelişmesinde önemli bir paya sahiptir. Hatta bu konuda birkaç isimden biridir. Dockrat Johannesburg 2006/7 Abstract The Ottoman Empire, an imperial power that existed from 1299 to 1923, was one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea. Ottoman Turkish was used especially between the 16th and 19th centuries during the Ottoman Empire. This ornamented, artificial language separated the general population from intellectual and palace elite and a communication problem followed. Although the minorities of the Ottoman Empire were free to use their language amongst themselves, if they needed to communicate with the government they had to use Ottoman Turkish. This thesis explains these language differences and the resulting problems they created during the Empire. Examples of original correspondence are used to highlight the communication differences and the difficulties that ensured. From this study, the author concludes that Ottoman Turkish was not a separate language from Turkish; instead, it was a variation of Turkish in inexistence for approximately 600 years. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962).
