Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press. 356 pages. ISBN: 9780674057791. Most of the literature on the partition of India and Pakistan highlights the role of Muslim League and the British colonialists in dividing the Indian peninsula. However in a novel rendition of partition studies, Nair analyses the situation of the minority Punjabi Hindus in the Muslim majority province of Punjab, who as a religious community were otherwise a majority throughout India, during the partition. The partition suddenly rendered the Pun- jabi Hindus alien in their own land. In this revisionist history of the partition, Nair focuses on the social and political history of the Punjab province in India, from the four decades preceding independence to the post- colonial times. She traces the religious and communitarian politics of the Punjabi Hindu minorities and their dynamics of interaction with the British, the Sikhs and the Muslims. Plodding through an unconventional analysis, Nair demonstrates that there was nothing inexorable about the partition of Punjab. Presenting an eventful historical narrative from 1920 onwards, Nair rejects the usual notion that the communal divide between the Hindu and the Muslim led to the partition of India. She also culls the naturalized view that the Muslims were responsible for the partition of India. In fact many of the influential Punjabi Hindu families and leaders actively contrib- uted to the petty politics that led to the partition. However it was not a sinisterly pre-planned decision, as none of these families oversaw the brutal destruction of life and property that followed the partition. -

E. V. Smirnova SOME NOTES ON TRADITIONAL MARATHA JEWELLERY ABSTRACT. The history of Indian jewelry goes back to about five thousand years. During its history, India has been conquered numerous times. However, despite the foreign influence, Indian culture has not lost its identity. The Marathas are carriers of a unique subculture, located at the junction of the Aryan and Dravidian worlds. While the political and socio-economical history of Maharashtra is well studied, there is a considerable lack of research on the culture of the Marathas. Meanwhile, the material culture of the Marathas has its own characteristics, particularly Maratha jewelries arouse profound interest. Ornaments of a Maratha woman is not just a decoration but a special language speaking to others about her status and the events of her life. Jewelry is a family treasury and amulets. Some of the ornaments in modern Maharashtra are known by Persian names, which is incorrectly attributed to their non-Indian origin. Much Maratha jewelry have an ancient history, evidenced in the paintings of Ajanta, sculptural groups, etc. This study provides a brief overview of some pieces of the Maratha jewelry. They are divided into several groups: jewelry for the head, nose ornaments, ear ornaments, neck ornaments, arm ornaments, ornaments for the hand, rings, ornaments for the waist, foot ornaments. The article provides local terms, descriptions of jewelry, their mention in historical sources and cultural monuments. The Portuguese, Dutch, French and the English came to India to promote trade and commerce. The English who established the East-India Co. in 1600, gradually consolidated their hold in different parts of India. They had very capable men like Sir. Thomas Roe, Colonel Close, General Smith, Elphinstone, Grant Duff etc . The English shrewdly exploited the disunity among the Indian rulers. They were very diplomatic in their approach. Due to their far sighted policies, the English were able to expand and consolidate their rule in Maharashtra. 2 The Company’s government had trapped most of the Maratha rulers in Subsidiary Alliances and fought three important wars with Marathas over a period of 43 years (1775 -1818). 1.2 POLITICAL CONDITIONS BEFORE THE BRITISH CONQUEST : The Company’s Directors sent Lord Wellesley as the Governor- General of the Company’s territories in India, in 1798. -

Language and Thought (An Insight through Hindi) Sumit Verma (Y9605) | Mentor: Dr. Amitabha Mukerjee, Dr. Achla M Raina IIT Kanpur November 15, 2011 Abstract Does the Language that we speak, affect the way we perceive the world? This question has been under debate for a long time now and has seen the work of several cognitive linguists ranging from Benjamin Whorf to Lera Boroditsky. The present work looks at two aspects of Language i.e. word order and grammatical gender and as to how they play/do not play a role in influencing the way we think about the world. The first part of the work focuses on word order (i.e. SVO/SOV distinction) in Language. A non verbal motion experiment was performed on native Hindi speakers (Mess workers form Hall V IITK) which is primarily a SOV language and on native English speakers (using Amazon Mechanical Turk) which is primarily a SVO language. Results showed that irrespective of whether your native language is SVO or SOV in nature, SOV is the preferred order while performing pictorial motion tasks. In the second part of the work, grammatical gender differences between Bihari Hindi and Standard Hindi were looked at. Hindi in general does not have any separate classification for the neutral gender. In Bihari Hindi, most of the neutral words are considered to be masculine whereas in Standard Hindi, there is a specific set of rules to define the gender of a neutral object. A visual experiment was done on native Bihari Hindi Speakers and native Standard Hindi speakers, using words which were masculine in Bihari Hindi but feminine in Standard Hindi.
