Haiti, the first black state to become independent in 1804, is a powerful symbol for afro-descendants worldwide. But it’s also a flourishing, dense and deep culture which has left its imprint on all the arts from painting to music, literature, theatre and cinema. Its influence today knows no borders. Among leading ambassadors of Haitian culture are figures such as Wyclef Jean, founder with Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel of the Fugees, a cult group which has sold 30 million albums, the legendary rappers Jay-Z, who has a Haitian father, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott and P. Diddy, who has used the Haitian flag in some of his clips, the young and talented Michael Brun, an international DJ, product of the biggest music festivals and whose ”Bayo”, inspired by the rara Haitian carnival style, African rhythms and electro beat has seduced the entire world, J Perry, musician and fan of reggae, pompa, and Caribbean music whose “Bouje” was used in the Disney film Cars, and also Usher, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Lenny Kravitz... not to mention francophone artists such as the singer Gage, the director Raoul Peck, the comedian Anthony Kavanagh or the late Teri Moïse. PRESS RELEASE I PARIS, 24TH SEPTEMBER, 2018 TRACE AYITI, UNIQUE IN THE WORLD – For the first time, Haitian culture is getting its due recognition thanks to TRACE Ayiti. From Kompa to Mizik Rasin, from the Kreyol & Radobay rappers to pop and Haitian gospel, the channel offers Haiti-focused premium content with the best music videos, artist interviews, magazines, concerts and documentaries. An offer that the region’s leading artists recognise as being simply revolutionary, as they come together to celebrate the channel’s launch. For Wyclef Jean, “TRACE Ayiti is incredible for the country. It will inspire an entire new Haitian generation.” The Haitian-American artist Phyllisia Ross adds: “The fact that TRACE is giving the opportunity to a global public to discover Haiti directly through its community of artists is really important.” Valérie Gilles Alexia, head of TRACE for France and the Caribbean: "The respect, friendship and collaboration between TRACE and Haiti goes back a long way. TRACE has a long-standing relationship with numerous artists in the region and we’ve hold many special events there in the past. But the richness and diversity of Haitian culture deserved more, it merited its own channel and that’s what we’re excited to provide with the launch of TRACE Ayiti." AVAILABILITY – From today, TRACE Ayiti is available in Haiti and in the West Indies-Guyana region via LES BOUQUETS CANAL+ through the EVASION option on channel 173. • Curating and Sharing the Sources of Vodou Religion and Culture
The Vodou Archive: Curating and sharing the sources of Vodou religion and culture: Collaborative Research and Scholarship on Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora Benjamin Hebblethwaite and Laurent Dubois 1. Statement of significance and impact This collaborative partnership spearheaded by the University of Florida and Duke University seeks $240,804 from the NEH Collaborative Research Grants to improve the understanding of a central Haitian and Haitian-American spiritual tradition by gathering the audiovisual and textual sources of Vodou communities, by interpreting what we collect, by expanding the holdings through a self-submission tool, and by diffusing the knowledge via an open access digital library hosted within the existing Digital Library of the Caribbean. In addition to the 27 international partners that cooperate with the Digital Library of the Caribbean, this project includes collaboration from researchers at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Miami, the Schrijversvakschool in the Netherlands, Florida International University, the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, and City Lore, among others. This project is part of a tradition of scholarly work stretching back to the early 20th century that has sought to counter reductionist and racist visions of the religion through ethnography, analysis of culture and music, and an exploration of the role of Vodou in Haiti’s founding revolution. Such work has long turned to the central texts in Haitian Vodou: its Creole-language songs. This project will produce the first freely accessible multimedia digital library that uses audiovisual technologies to curate, elucidate and facilitate the advanced search of the rich primary materials of Vodou in order to promote discovery and educate a broad public.

  • Haitian Jazz in Brooklyn
American Music Review The H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLIX, Issue 1 Fall 2019 Global Jazz Connections: Haitian Jazz in Brooklyn Ray Allen Jazz scholars have long acknowledged a “Latin Tinge” in early American jazz, attributing its source to the musics of Cuba, Argentina, and other Spanish speaking countries of the Caribbean and South America. The musical interchange between the French-speaking Caribbean Islands and US is less well understood. This, despite a well-documented in-migration by Black and Creole Haitians to New Orleans during the nineteenth century, and the fact that two of the Crescent City’s early jazz icons, Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton and Sidney Bechet, were French Creoles of possible Caribbean ancestry. This history, coupled with the ongoing musical interchange between Haiti and the US over the last century, raises a number of significant questions. What, for example, were the influences of Afro-Haitian Vodou, rara, and other traditional rhythms on New Orleans’ incipient jazz scene of the early twentieth century? How did swing and post-war styles of US jazz shape Haitian dance and popular styles such as Vodou-jazz of the 1940s and 1950s, kompa of the 1960s, and mizik rasin (roots music) of the 1970s and 1980s? How do contemporary Haitian jazz musicians, networking between Haiti and diasporic communities in New York, Miami, and Paris, continue to dialogue with modern US jazz styles? And finally, what exactly constitutes Haitian jazz, perhaps better termed Haitian “Creole” jazz, in the twenty- first century? These were among the issues debated in a lively symposium titled “Haitian Jazz and American Jazz: Historical Connections and Specificities,” held at Brooklyn College on 20 September 2019.
