NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL Annual review 2018 A Annual 1 OVERVIEW We were honoured and proud to be appointed as Carnival organisers for 2018. We did not underestimate the challenge involved or the work required to gain the confidence and respect of carnivalists, the local community and the key strategic partners. The decision to fund us as Carnival organisers came quite late in the year and meant that we had a very tight time scale in which to engage, plan and deliver. This added additional pressure but also energised us to put pace into our work. From day one our vision was clear in that we wanted to deliver ‘A Safe, Successful and Spectacular Carnival.’ It was a vision that we promoted widely and was embraced by strategic partners and carnivalists. To achieve our vision, we set out a clear purpose: ‘to harness the energy of carnivalists and local communities to enable us to be an effective and trusted organiser of the Carnival.‘ Feedback from strategic partners, carnivalists and local residents indicates that we were successful in achieving our vision and purpose. This report is a summary of key aspects of our role as Carnival organisers. More detailed reports and documentation have been made available to our strategic partners in relation to matters such as health and safety and communications. GOVERNANCE Carnival Village Trust (the Trust) is a registered charity. It has a wholly-owned subsidiary company, TabernacleW11 Ltd, which manages the Tabernacle, Powis Square. In order to manage the particular risks associated with the Carnival, the Trust established a second subsidiary company, Notting Hill Carnival Ltd (NHC), which acted as the legal vehicle for Carnival operations. -

Creolizing Contradance in the Caribbean
Peter Manuel 1 / Introduction Contradance and Quadrille Culture in the Caribbean region as linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse as the Carib- bean has never lent itself to being epitomized by a single music or dance A genre, be it rumba or reggae. Nevertheless, in the nineteenth century a set of contradance and quadrille variants flourished so extensively throughout the Caribbean Basin that they enjoyed a kind of predominance, as a common cultural medium through which melodies, rhythms, dance figures, and per- formers all circulated, both between islands and between social groups within a given island. Hence, if the latter twentieth century in the region came to be the age of Afro-Caribbean popular music and dance, the nineteenth century can in many respects be characterized as the era of the contradance and qua- drille. Further, the quadrille retains much vigor in the Caribbean, and many aspects of modern Latin popular dance and music can be traced ultimately to the Cuban contradanza and Puerto Rican danza. Caribbean scholars, recognizing the importance of the contradance and quadrille complex, have produced several erudite studies of some of these genres, especially as flourishing in the Spanish Caribbean. However, these have tended to be narrowly focused in scope, and, even taken collectively, they fail to provide the panregional perspective that is so clearly needed even to comprehend a single genre in its broader context. Further, most of these pub- lications are scattered in diverse obscure and ephemeral journals or consist of limited-edition books that are scarcely available in their country of origin, not to mention elsewhere.1 Some of the most outstanding studies of individual genres or regions display what might seem to be a surprising lack of familiar- ity with relevant publications produced elsewhere, due not to any incuriosity on the part of authors but to the poor dissemination of works within (as well as 2 Peter Manuel outside) the Caribbean. -

Curating and Sharing the Sources of Vodou Religion and Culture
The Vodou Archive: Curating and sharing the sources of Vodou religion and culture: Collaborative Research and Scholarship on Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora Benjamin Hebblethwaite and Laurent Dubois 1. Statement of significance and impact This collaborative partnership spearheaded by the University of Florida and Duke University seeks $240,804 from the NEH Collaborative Research Grants to improve the understanding of a central Haitian and Haitian-American spiritual tradition by gathering the audiovisual and textual sources of Vodou communities, by interpreting what we collect, by expanding the holdings through a self-submission tool, and by diffusing the knowledge via an open access digital library hosted within the existing Digital Library of the Caribbean. In addition to the 27 international partners that cooperate with the Digital Library of the Caribbean, this project includes collaboration from researchers at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Miami, the Schrijversvakschool in the Netherlands, Florida International University, the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, and City Lore, among others. This project is part of a tradition of scholarly work stretching back to the early 20th century that has sought to counter reductionist and racist visions of the religion through ethnography, analysis of culture and music, and an exploration of the role of Vodou in Haiti’s founding revolution. Such work has long turned to the central texts in Haitian Vodou: its Creole-language songs. This project will produce the first freely accessible multimedia digital library that uses audiovisual technologies to curate, elucidate and facilitate the advanced search of the rich primary materials of Vodou in order to promote discovery and educate a broad public. -
Boxing Day Launch
JUNKANEW is a carnival concept delivered by Global Carnivalz and its partners online. Post COVID the participating partners can tour in regional carnivals to encourage the use of environmentally friendly materials and non-motorised processions. The online experience offers viewers interaction with the host and opportunities to submit their own Junkanew products as part of the online Junkanew Challenge. Having been involved with the Junkanoo Commandos in the Bahamas and various other Carnival practises, Global Carnivalz CEO Pax Nindi was inspired to initiate Junkanew referring to traditional Junkanoo culture practised in the Bahamas and Ghana. In order to make it relevant to the UK where Global Carnivalz is based, Junkanew will incorporate other carnival traditions e.g. Lanterns, Steelpan, Brass band, Blocos and Dance. In the Bahamas and Ghana, Junkanoo as an event takes place on Christmas and Boxing Day involving participating groups marching in costumes accompanied by brass, drums and home-made percussion instruments. The costumes are created out of sustainable and recycled materials using, cardboard, wire, glue, tape, paint and environmentally friendly decorations. Presentation of music is not amplified or motorised and features home-made percussion, brass instruments and drums. We believe Junkanew will play a role in encouraging the use of recycled materials in Carnival and similar arts. Practises. Among other things, our aim is to encourage the public to respect the environment by recycling in the form of taking junk and making into loveable new creations which can be used beyond Christmas and Boxing Day. BOXING DAY LAUNCH Junkanew will be launched as a 6-hour livestream on Boxing Day 26th December 2020. -
