Mach 2 Concorde magazine Concorde women Female pioneers Supersonic rivals The Tu-144 and the Boeing 2707 Concorde watch Exciting news from UK and France Issue 3 March 2016 Mach 2 March 2016 Introduction This edition of Mach 2 magazine is slightly differ- ent from usual – we are giving most of it over to the women whose work over the decades helped to make the Concorde services possible. Our spe- cial series of articles commemorates the female pilots and engineers, and even one of the first Con- corde test pilots, and includes an account from our regular writer GIlly Pratt. This issue also reveals an insight into the naviga- tion systems on Concorde, from former Captain Christopher Orlebar, and a bumper crop of excit- ing news from around the Concorde museums. In addition, co-editor Nigel Ferris looks back at Concorde’s two great rivals – the Soviet Union’s Tu-144 and the USA’s planned supersonic Boeing 2707. He assesses their strengths and weaknesses and considers what might have been if these two aircraft had shared the sky with Concorde. In this issue 2 Introduction 12 Supersonic rivals Nigel Ferris 3 Fascinating facts Nigel Ferris 14 Concorde Watch 4 Feature: Concorde ladies 10 Concorde navigation Editors: Katie John, Nigel Ferris Christopher Orlebar Cover: Concorde G-AXDN at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford (Photo: Katie John) 2 Mach 2 March 2016 Fascinating facts Nigel Ferris looks at some of the features that made Concorde uniquely fitted to fly faster and higher than any other airliner. OVER 5000 HOURS of wind tunnel testing 1 was carried out to optimise the complex compound curvatures and cambers of the wings, resulting in the final shape, which was ide- ally suited to high-speed flight. -

In short, Vice Admiral / Naval Inspector Mr. Axel Schimpf stated: 'As the eyes, ears and tools of the seafaring units the 'Marineflieger' were an indispendable part of the flrrt, that was yesterday and that it is today'.Being one of several subjects in European aviation history marked by hundred years of existence the German Airday was unlike others not honoured with bright sunny weather but with continuous showering instead, and what a pity that fact was for the thousands of spectators and aviation enthousiasts! As a prelude to the Airday the Marineflieger organized at 17-08-2013 a spottersday for selected public and press, and for those lucky ones the sun appeared during the day every now and then and so enabling some good moments of photographic circumstances. Moving and shuffling The event was highlighted with two special painted Marineflieger Sea King and Lynx helicopters forming a pair with the same design of art. Also an Orion maritime patrol aircraft was painted with a blue band and 100 Jahre Marineflieger. This high profile presence for public spectators reveals it is important for the Marineflieger establishment to get attention of public and taxpayer. Hundred years of German naval aviation also indicates very much where to go in the coming years. -

Scope on German Naval Air Force
DUTCH AVIATION SUPPORT Chamber of Commerce: 08106154 Piloot en Vliegtuig – Aranysas – Cockpit – TopguN – AFM – Aeronautica&Difesa - AirFan Scope on German Naval Air Force (Nordholz) Scope on German Naval Air Force (Nordholz) The naval units with flying aircraft saw some reorganisation in the last years. Not only was there a major change with the disbandment of MFG-1 & 2 and giving up the role of anti-ship warfare by fast jets but also the anti submarine warfare task was boosted by acquiring modernised P-3C Orion’s. Today operational activities are concentrated in MFG-3 & MFG-5. While Marinefliegergeschwader 5 (MFG-5) is located at Kiel- Holtenau flying Sea King Mk. 41 in the SAR role, all other aircraft types in the inventory serve with MFG-3 at Nordholz. Units at Nordholz Nordholz Air Base is quite large with three ‘staffels’ (squadrons) and 4 types of aircraft organized in MFG-3 and named after ‘Graf Zeppelin’ the famous designer of airships. Nordholz will be the most important place for naval aviation in the next years and will see many flying activities. The third ‘staffel’ is equipped with the Sea Lynx Mk.88A (Super Lynx Mk.100) of which 22 where acquired since 1981 originally as Mk. 88 version. The helicopters are embarked on F-122, F-123 and F-124 frigates (two helicopters at one ship) for the ASW and ASuW role to form the ears and eyes around the ship and to watch or hunt submarines. For this last role the Lynx can use the dipping sonar and when necessary attack the submarine with two Mk.46 mod.2 torpedoes or depth charges. -

Jacqueline Auriol (1917 - 2000) Par Daniel Liron Une Recordwoman De Charme
