Page 2 OCTOBER 2020 Prayer to Mary Queen of the Knights Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our order. Keep us true to the pledge to extend the kingship of thy Divine Son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues, which should characterize those specially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights we are constantly observed, our faith judged and our order appreciated. Accept O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion of thy servants, the Knights

Why is October the Month of the Rosary? October 10th is the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, sometimes referred to as the Feast of the Holy Rosary. The day was dedicated by St. Pius V who credited a victory over the invading Turks to the intercession of Mary through the rosary. Pope Benedict XVI described the image of Our Lady of the Rosary in a 2007 Angelus:

“The traditional image of Our Lady of the Rosary portrays Mary who with one arm supports the Child Jesus and with the other is offering the rosary beads to St Dominic. This important iconography shows that the Rosary is a means given by the Virgin to contemplate Jesus and, in meditating on his life, to love him and follow him ever more faithfully. It is this message that Our Lady has also bequeathed to us in her various apparitions.” (Benedict XVI, Angelus, October 7, 2009)

1571 - The Battle of Lepanto The victory at Lepanto is the most famous and important of the military victories through the Rosary. On October 7, 1571 the Turk's attempted to invade Christian Europe at Lepanto on the coast of Greece. The Pope asked Catholics to pray the Rosary with the intention that the Turk's attack would fail. The Christians were out numbered 3 to 1. As the Turks sailed across the sea, a sudden storm emerged and 200 Turkish ships and 50,000 of their men sank. Thanks to the Rosary prayers and against all odds, the Christians were victorious.

Silver Rose Run 2020 – Visit to the Shrine

The Silver Rose symbolizes the commitment of the Knights of Columbus to restoring respect for the sanctity of human life from conception until death.

This year the Knights are “running” five Silver Roses across Canada and the United States. The five roses come together in Texas to travel over the International Bridge on 12 December 2020 and handed over to the Knights from Monterrey to its final destination.

In March 2020, Silver Rose - One Life, One Rose Program will begin when eight Silver Roses start their journeys on various routes in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Three routes will end in Mexico, another three in Texas, one other in Washington, D. C., and the eighth route will complete its journey at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT, where the Knights of Columbus was founded. All eight of the routes will conclude their journeys on December 12, 2020 on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, the same day when the three Silver Roses in Mexico reach the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey. 2020 marks the 60th year of the program, which began in 1960 to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Knights of Columbus councils and Fourth Degree assemblies in several jurisdictions. In 2001, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson expanded the program by beginning the “Running of the Rose” from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Toronto. This is “a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus,” said Supreme Knight Anderson. “Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through and the of the roses.” Today, eight Silver Roses travel through North America exemplifying Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady and commitment to the Culture of Life.

The Silver Rose will be at our OLMC parish from October 9th-16th. It will be available for viewing in the Adoration Chapel and a box will be there for all your prayer petitions that will accompany the Silver Rose to its final destination in Monterrey, Mexico where all the petitions will be read and prayed upon.
