Chicago Servite Prpvincial Archives 2017 GENERAL PRESENTATION

Over the years the Servite Provincial Archives (formerly known as the Morini Memorial Collection) has gathered together a significant amount of material to document not only Fr. James Keane’s many activities but also Marian devotion in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

Fr. Keane was the founder of the Novena in honor of Our Sorrowful Mother (1937),and editor of Novena Notes (1937-1941) editor of The Southern Cross, the diocesan newapaper in San Diego, California (1942-1944), the founder of the in Ireland (1947) and (1953), editor of Queen of the Missions (1954-1955_ with its continuation as The Age of Mary (1955-1958). In the 1950s he was active with the Ambassadors of Mary and the Immaculate Heart Center in . He was especially noted for his weekly television program from 1954 to 1956. “Behold Thy Mother,” the only television program devoted entirely to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Because of his importance all the materials related to Fr. Keane found in the Servite Provincial Archives in Chicago are grouped together here in one publication. PART I, was formed shorted after his death in 1975; PART II. consists of material preserved originally by the Ambassadors of Mary and donated to the Provincial Archives in 2013, and PART III. which is a bibliography of his printed works and a list of newspaper clippings found in the Provincial Archives which related to him. Not included here are the two folders in the personnel section of the Archives of the Eastern American Province. These files, of course, are confidential and are available for consultation with the authorization of the Prior Provincial.

Since each part was prepared separately at different times, they are presented here as separate documents with their own pagination.

Chicago The Morini Memorial Collection 1980 INVENTORY OF MATERIAL RELATING TO FR. JAMES M. KEANE, O.S.M.

INTRODUCTION

Fr. James M. Keane, O.S.M., was noted as the founder of the Perpetual Novena in Honor of Our Sorrowful Mother, as the founder of the first houses of the Servite Order in Ireland and Australia, and as a preacher on Our Lady on radio and television.

Shortly after his death on September 19, 1975, an attempt was made to gather as much material as possible about Fr. Keane into the Morini Memorial Collection (now known as the Servite Provincial Archives). Additional items have since been added to the Keane collection through the donation of materials gathered by Fr. John Huels, 0.S.M., in preparation for his biography of Fr. 0 INVENTORY OF THE PAPERS OF FR. JAMES M. KEANE, O.S.M. – PART II

INTRODUCTION

1. Provenance On July 9, 2013, Fr. John Fontana, prior provincial of the USA Province, informed me that the Ambassadors of Mary wanted to know if we would be interested in some papers of Fr. James M. Keane, O.S.M. The contact person was Ms. Patricia Hackett. After Fr. Keane died in 1975 I had assembled papers found at that time in his possession as well as material concerning him as received from friends of his and also material used by Fr. John Huels, O.S.M., for his biography of Fr. Keane, Fr. Keane, Servant of Mary (Berwyn: Servite Press, 1979).1 I shall refer to this earlier collection as “Fr. Keane papers: Part I.” At that time I had contacted Ms. Elsie Broucek of the Ambassadors of Mary, a lay group founded by Fr. Keane, because I had heard that some of Fr. Keane’s papers were at their store, the Immaculate Heart Center, at 5916½ W. Madison St. From the conversation I gleaned that some of Fr. Keane’s papers were indeed there but that the Ambassadors of Mary would prefer to keep them at the Center. I suggested that if in the future they would like to donate them to the Provincial Archives they would be welcome. The telephone call from Ms. Hackett in 2013 was, in a sense, the response to my invitation made thirty-eight years earlier. The Ambassadors of Mary were now in the former convent of St. John Bosco on North McVickers, near Grand and Austin in Chicago. I made two on-site visits to evaluate the papers. They were kept principally in five file cabinets plus several large plastic storage tubs. In succeeding visits in the fall of 2013 Ms. Hackett and I placed the material which I thought should be taken to the archives into twenty-four storage boxes. On November 19, 2013, Fr. Larry Choate, O.S.M., came to St. John Bosco convent with a pickup truck and a couple of helpers to bring the twenty-four boxes to the Provincial Archives at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica. The organization of the material proceeded rather slowly, due to the fact that I was at the archives only two days a week and that other items and questions required more immediate attention. Two preliminary observations about these Keane Papers should be kept in mind as a more complete presentation of their organization and content is given. First, some material has been lost. This will be evident as we explain each of the sections. This probably is due to persons borrowing the material and not returning it. Second, time limitation has not made it possible to answer at times the most evident questions, or to verify the accuracy of the dates and titles on the phonograph records or the contents of the reel-to-reel tapes. Neither was it possible at this time to check to see that the contents of the file folders in fact corresponded to the labels.

1 “Inventory of Material Relating to Fr. James M. Keane, O.S.M. (1901-1975),” prepared by Sr. M. Veronica Davison, O.S.M. and Fr. Conrad M. Borntrager, O.S.M. (Chicago, 1980). This is a typewritten inventory.

1 2. The Author, Fr. James M., Keane, O.S.M.

It is not necessary here to present a full biographical sketch of Fr. James M. Keane, O.S.M., because a complete account of his life can be found in Fr. John Huels’ biography. Shorter summaries of his life and work can be found in my article in and Fr. Gabriele Roschini’s notice in his Galleria Servitana .2 Some essential dates to keep in mind: Fr. Keane was born in Chicago August 15, 1901, He made his first profession of vows in the Servite Order on September 8 1921. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on August 8, 1926. He started the Perpetual Novena in honor of Our Sorrowful Mother in Chicago in 1937 and remained its director until 1941. He made the first Servite foundation in Ireland in 1947 and in Australia in 1953. During this period, 1947 to 1953 he was also General Consultor of the Order. From 1953 to 1960 he was active in Chicago. Virtually all of the materials listed in this inventory are from this period. Therefore it will be useful to outline in a more detailed way his activities during this period.3 He returned to Ireland in 1960 but was seriously injured in an automobile accident in 1961. From 1966 to his death in 1975 he was lovingly cared for by the Servite Sisters in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Fr. Keane himself outlined his activities during the years 1953 to 1960 in two places. The first is in a letter he wrote to Sister Mary of St. Brigid, a member of the Good Shepherd Convent in Belfast, Ireland. In this letter, dated August 30, 1956, he apologizes for not writing to her earlier, because “I get no time for personal correspondence,” and then he lists his various activities. We can see that many of them are reflected in the contents of this inventory.4

1. My weekly TV program “Behold Thy Mother,” which is now in its third year. It takes a great deal of time to prepare an original script on Our Lady each week. Many, many hours are also given to rehearsals, technical arrangements, etc. 2. Then there is our magazine to be edited each month. All the unsigned articles are mine.5 I must do all the editing. We are short of stenographical staff, etc. There is endless correspondence with contributors, printers, etc.

2 John Huels, O.S.M. Father Keane, Servant of Mary (Berwyn, IL: Servite Press, 1979); Conrad M. Borntrager, O.S.M., “Father James R. Keane, O.S.M. (1901-1975)” in Marianum 38 (1976): 88-89; and Gabriele M. Roschini, O.S.M, “ Keane, Giacomo M.,” in Galleria Servitana, vol. II, Religiosi illustri dell’Ordine dei Servi di Maria dal 1933 al 1976 (Rome 1976): 139-140.

3 For the period of 1953 to 1960 pages 110 to 123 in Father Keane, Servant of Mary are useful to understand better Fr. Keane’s activities during these years.

4 This letter can be found under Correspondence: 4. General Correspondence, B. Groups, no. 11 in Box 4.

5 This is important in compiling a bibliography of all Fr. Keane’s articles. In the final section (Part III) of this work I have listed all his signed articles, not knowing that the unsigned articles were also his. There is need now to complete his bibliography.

2 3. Our TV mail is enormous. Many volunteer workers help with it, but many of the answers must come from me. 4. We have opened a Marian Center here in Chicago. It is called “The Immaculate Heart Center.” We are trying to make it the greatest Marian center in U.S.A. It has a Marian Information Bureau, book shop containing every available publication about Our Lady, every medal of Our Lady, etc., etc. Our slogan is “If it’s about Our Lady, we have it.” 5. We are guiding the Pilgrim Virgin project. We have 17 Pilgrim Virgins in the Chicago area. 6. Each First Saturday I conduct a Retreat. 7. Between telecasts I accept many preaching assignments and lectures.

In number 4 he mentions the “Immaculate Heart Center.” In an article in 1956 he lists twelve major departments, each of which is in charge of a Director. I will merely list the names of these departments, but in the article he describes their work more fully .6

1. Our Lady’s TV Program “Behold Thy Mother.”: Here he notes that one week they received 37,000 letters in response to the TV program. But Fr. Huels’ biography mentions that the average weekly response to the program was 2000 letters (p. 113). 2. Our Lady’s magazine The Age of Mary 3. First Saturday Retreats 4. Pilgrim Virgin Project. 5. Marian Information Bureau. This might explain the “Articles of Marian Interest,” collected and indexed so as to reply to the numerous queries the Immaculate Heart Center received. 6. Marian Book Shop 7. De Montfort’s True Devotion 8. Marian Religious Articles 9. Marian Greeting Cards 10. Leaflets and Free Literature 11. Marian Agents 12. Ambassadors of Mary

This list of Fr. Keane’s activities during this “Chicago” period, 1953 to 1960, clarifies certain concentrations of material in this collection of Part II of his papers.

3. Organization and Content

From the first general assessment of the papers held by the Ambassadors of Mary several divisions seemed evident, for example: the large binders of material, the recordings, the file folders

6 James M. Keane, O.S.M.,”Chicago’s Immaculate Heart Center,” in Triune: Monthly Publication, Illinois Club for Men and Women vol. 4, no. 1 (October 1956): 4-6. It was located at 5916 ½ W. Madison St. Chicago.

3 already neatly labeled. There was no overall plan or organizational diagram to follow, except that the “Articles of Marian Interest” did have its own Index, and certain parts of the correspondence had their own dividers. In the course of working with the papers certain divisions imposed themselves, until the organization of the material was finalized. So now these papers of Fr. Keave are presented in the following sections:

I. Binders. There are 30 large binders, each probably an inch or two thick with a variety of material. II. Correspondence. The correspondence now fills 10 archive boxes. III. Phonograph records. There are 251 phonograph records, most of them 78 rmp records of Fr. Keane’s television program “Behold Thy Mother.” IV. Audio tapes. A. 24 reel-to-reel tapes. B. 6 audio cassettes. V. Articles of Marian Interest, in 8 file drawers of file folders.

From this general outline it is clear that three sections are based on the format of the material – binders, phonograph records, and audio tapes – and not on the content. In fact the same content can be found at times in all three formats. This seemed a better solution that to try to place dissimilar formats together because of similarity of content. Two of the sections are composed of regular file folders. Here the division into two parts was based on content not similarity of format. The correspondence was quite distinct from the “Articles of Marian Interest,” which had it own index. We shall now examine each of these five sections separately. For each section we must keep in mind not only the relation of the material in the given section to similar material in other sections but also in relation to the material found in “Fr. Keane’s papers: Part I.”

I. Binders

The 30 binders were not found together nor in any particular order. As will appear also with the other sections, these seem to date almost exclusively from the 1950s, the decade of Fr. Keane’s weekly television program and his work as editor of Queen of the Missions (January 1954 to June- July 1955) which continued as The Age of Mary (August-September 1955 to November-December 1958). The first category of binders “Personal biographical” consists of four desk calendars, 1955 to 1959 (1958 is missing). These provide a glimpse into his daily life. More information about his daily activities during this period can be found in his article about the Immaculate Heart Center which was a center of his activities at this time and the correspondence with Good Shepherd Convent in Belfast in 1956, as cited above. The second category of binders contains the “TV Scripts.” All of these date from the time when the program was telecast on WBKB-TV, March 1955 to October 1956, a total of 81 telecasts. Three of the binders are simply the scripts themselves and are numbered I, II, and IV. Binder III (telecasts 43 to 57) is missing. The following two binders are labeled “Censor’s Copy.” and cover the same period, except they appear to be a complete set of scripts. A further study of Fr. Keane’s telecasts could collate and compare the various sources: these “TV Scripts,,” the Censors’s Copy,

4 the 78 rpm phonograph records, the reel-to-reel tapes, and the scripts which were published by WGN-TV, and those published by Fr. Keane in The Age of Mary. The binders themselves have not been checked to verify that all the TV scripts are in fact present in these binders. The third category of binders contains retreat notes and talks given for various occasions. These are similar to some of the notebooks found in the “Fr. Keane Papers, Part I.” and should be studied together with them. The fourth category, “clippings and other material on various subjects” is here divided into a number of sub-groups according to the subject matter. In general these are similar in content to the last and largest section of this inventory, “Articles of Marian Interest.” In fact most of the titles of these binders correspond to the titles of folders in the “Articles of Marian Interest.” The final category, “Pilgrim Virgin,” should be studied in relation with the folders “Pilgrim Virgin” as no. 9 under “Correspondence.” There is also a folder “Pilgrim Virgin” under “Fatima” in the “Articles of Marian Interest.”

II. Correspondence

While this section consists predominately of correspondence there are some other items; all, however, fall into the format of “file folders.” In the strictly correspondence section the original file folders, with the blue typed labels, have been retained. The only change is that they are now in alphabetical order by the correspondent. The folders which were marked “Fr. K. Personal” have been placed in a separate grouping. Some of the non-correspondence groups include biographical documents, sermons, a large envelop of mission photos which I presume were gathered for the Queen of the Missions publication. Several of the divisions of this section were indicated by dividers found in the file drawers at the St. John Bosco convent. These include: The Age of Mary (correspondence and documentation relating to the publication of The Age of Mary), Ambassadors of Mary, Immaculate Heart Center, Pilgrim Virgin, Archdiocesan Communications, True Devotion, “Behold Thy Mother,” Rome, and Via Matris. These divisions have been retained because they reflect Fr. Keane’s original intent. In virtually all cases the wording as found on the typed labels has been retained. The contents of the folders were not examined to verify that they indeed reflect the information on the label. This section is important for several reasons.

1) It includes some of Fr. Keane’s sermons. This complements the material found in “Fr. Keane’s Papers, Part I.” 2) The correspondence on “The Age of Mary” provides a rather detailed view of his contacts for articles for the publication as well as financial and administrative aspects. 3) The photos gathered for the missions record the progress of the Servite missions in the 1950s. It might be noted that the Servite missions in Transvaal (Republic of ) and Swaziland are represented in the photo collection but not the American Servite missions in Zululand. At present the Provincial Archives has a large collection of photos from Zululand, organized and identified by Fr. Edwin Kinch, the first of the Zululand missions. 4) The correspondence about the Immaculate Heart Center provides documentation for the work and activities of the Center in these very active years of its existence.

5 5) The division “Behold Thy Mother” includes a folder of photographs showing the set for the television program “Behold Thy Mother.” Since no video of the program exists these give a idea of what the television audience would have seen. These photos complete the photos of the TV program as found in “Fr. Keane’s Papers, Part I.”

III. Phonograph records

The 247 phonograph records of the television program “Behold Thy Mother” form almost this entire section. They were found in no particular order. A certain number of them were in albums of six records each, but the majority were in individual sleeves or at times bunched three or four together in a single sleeve. All except numbers 245, 246, and 247, had dates and also at times the title of the telecast. In putting them in chronological order, those in the six-record albums were kept in the original albums; all the others were placed in archive quality sleeves. It appears that three records (six sides) were needed to record the complete half-hour telecast. In the inventory those telecasts which seem to be complete are marked with an asterisk (*). These number 64: that is, there are 64 telecasts for which we have complete recordings. The others have only one or two records. It is not clear why some are complete and some records are missing. Finally it should be noted that there are no known videos of the television program. Records 248 and 249 are excerpts by Fr. Clarence Brissette, O.S.M., from the radio broadcast (WCFL) of the Novena in honor of Our Sorrowful Mother. Record 250 has some short excerpts from the radio broadcast of the noon Solemn High Mass from Our Lady of Sorrows over WGES. Unfortunately it is not a very useful recording because it is so incomplete, but it is included here because it is the only known recording of these weekly WGES broadcasts of Solemn High Mass. Record 251 is a duplicate of a record found in the “Fr. Keane papers, Part I,” of Fr. Keane leading the Via Matris.

IV. Audio tapes

A. The first ten of the reel-to-reel tapes are clearly part of a set of tapes recording the television program. They are numbered 6 to 9 and then 13 to 18. There is no indication where the missing numbers 1 to 5 and 10 to 12 might be. Each tape has the recording of four television programs, the last being October of 1956, that is, the last program of the series. By estimating the number of programs on the missing tapes 1 to 5 it seems that they would go back to when the program series began on WBKB-TV in March of 1955. In that case originally there was a complete set of tapes recording all the WBKB-TV telecasts. The other 14 reel-to-reel tapes are on 7, 6, or 5 inch reels and cover a variety of subjects.

B. Five of the six audio cassettes (numbers 26 to 30) are dedicated to St. Louis DeMonrfort’s True Devotion to Mary, which together with Our Lady of Fatima form the two most important themes in Fr. Keane’s papers.

V. Articles of Marian Interest

This is the largest section of Fr. Keane’s papers, filling eight file cabinet drawers. It achieved its present form in three stages:

6 1) File folders with distinctive blue labels filled several of the original drawers of the file cabinets at the St. John Bosco convent. Within each drawer there was a visible alphabetical order, but the file drawers were not in sequence. In addition there was a typed “Index. Articles of Marian Interest,” This original index is now found in Drawer 8 of the Articles of Marian Interest. The first stage was to reconstruct the original collection based on the typed Index. This was relatively easy to do, but immediately two variations from the typed index became evident. First, some of the files listed on the index could not be found (these are now listed as “missing” on the current index), and second, there were other folders, with the same type of label, which were not listed on the Index. The original folders were retained. This led to stage two.

2) New titles were added to the original index as these similarly labeled folders were integrated into the original collection. One explanation might be that Fr. Keane continued to add to the collection, but did not always update the index. Some of the headings in the original index are typed in darker print, indicating that from time to time some additions to the index were made.

3) A second type of new material to be added to the collection was a large accumulation of unsorted clippings and articles filling one and half storage or banker’s box. These were similar in form and content to the articles and clippings already found in the labeled folders. In a few cases a note in Fr. Keane’s handwriting was clipped to the article indicating where he wanted it to be filed. The work of sorting this box and a half of papers was the most time consuming part of preparing the final form of Fr. Keane’s papers. Each article, clipping, prayer, or picture had to be assigned to one of the headings in the original index.

The final version of the “Index of Articles of Marian Interest” therefore includes the original folders, plus the folders already labeled but not yet placed on the index, and finally the large number of unsorted articles and clippings. In addition the index now indicates as “missing” those files listed on the original index but which could not be found, and as “empty” those folders which were found, but had nothing in them. In each case one explanation might be that the items were borrowed and never returned. They are listed because they show the extent of Fr. Keane’s interest in . It should be added also that not all of the almost 800 original file folders were checked to verify the accuracy of their contents or if the folders were empty. The structure of the Fr. Keane’s original “Index” has been kept, even though it presents numerous problems for the researcher. The headings are listed in alphabetical order with some of the major headings (e.g. Apparitions, Countries, Fatima, History) having sub-headings. The following are some examples of the problems:

1) The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in Chicago can be found under both “B” and also under “Shrines: Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows.” 2) Information about “Lourdes” can be found in several places: under “Apparitions,” “Novenas,” “Shrines,” and also under “ devoted to Mary: Bernadette Soubirous,,” and simply under “L” Lourdes. 3) “Lourdes” is listed under “L” simply as “Lourdes,” (not “”) but for Guadalupe you will find nothing under “G”. Instead you must search under “Shrines: ,” and also under “Apparitions: Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

7 4) “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” can be found under “Devotions,” “Novenas,” “O,” “Shrines,” and “Titles.” 5) Some countries are listed under both “Countries devoted to Mary”, and “History.” Ireland and are found under “Countries,” but are also found respectively under “I” and “P.” 6) In practice it is frequently difficult to distinguish a “Statue” from a “Shrine” or a “Title.” A Statue may be part of a Shrine and invoked with a Title.

For a researcher the best solution is to have a copy of the “Index of Articles of Marian Interest” on a computer and use a word search to find the desired information. In this collection of clippings and articles one notices immediately the almost complete lack of any articles or clippings by or about Servites. Since Fr. Keane had at hand all the Servite material he needed, it was not necessary to include this material in the “Articles of Marian Interest.” For example, he had the weekly Novena Notes and his own sermons and writings as well as his personal knownledge of Servite writings from the time of his residence in Rome.

4. The Importance of this Collection

This collection helps to document Marian devotion, especially in the , during the time of “The Age of Mary,” a period of great devotion to Our Lady just before the . The emphasis is certainly on the devotional side, but those instances where Fr. Keane speaks of, writes about, or collects material concerning doctrinal issues illustrate how these were presented to the ordinary Catholic of the time. It also demonstrates the world wide aspect of Marian devotion: countries and shrines throughout the entire world are represented. It seems that from this collection we can identify the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima and the True Devotion as presented by St. Louis DeMontfort as the two most important aspects of Marian devotion in Fr. Keane’s life. Because of the large number of Statues, Shrines, and Titles of Our Lady this collection can serve as an informational source for many lesser known devotions and shrines. Finally this collection is important because it documents the only television series dedicated exclusively to Our Lady. At a time when popular devotions are being studied, this is an important source which should not be overlooked.

In a letter dated July 3, 1955, he explains his work and includes a chapter VI “Shrines of Mary,” and also several pages with the note “attached sheets rejected.”

III. PHONOGRAPH RECORDS Numbers 1 to 247 are from the telecasts, all are on 78 rpm records unless otherwise noted. In general it appears that three records were required to record the entire telecast. For each date the number of records is given, together with side numbers. For example: records 1 and 2 are from the telecast of May 27, 1954, record 1 has sides 1 and 4 and record 2 had sides 2 and 5. Thus it would appear that one record with sides 3 and 6 is missing. In general the first record for each telecast will have sides 1 and 4, the second 2 and 5 and the third 3 and 6. Beginning with record 100 (September 19, 1955) this pattern changes and the first record for the telecast will have sides 1 and 2, the second record sides 3 and 4, and the third record sides 5 and 6. * Indicates that the entire telecast appears to be included.
