‘It seems life no longer has any value nowadays’ Church starts days of prayer against ‘blasphemers, murderers’ in nationwide gatherings 05:18 AM July 18, 2018 Church people light candles during a gathering in Manila to pray for an end to killings. —GRIG C. MONTEGRANDE Leaders of the Catholic Church on Monday presided over a thinly veiled counterattack against President Rodrigo Duterte’s assaults on the country’s most dominant religion and God himself, marking the start of days of prayer for protection against what a Church statement said were blasphemers and murderers. In Baguio City, at least 800 bishops and priests from parishes in Northern Luzon gathered for a weeklong retreat in response to a call made by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) to storm the heavens with prayers to end attacks on the Church and a cycle of violence that has alarmed many. Vatican represented This was the first time in decades that dioceses in Northern Luzon held a retreat together, said Fr. Oliver Mendoza, rector of Mary Help of Christian Theology Seminary in San Fabian town, Pangasinan province. The retreat at the Baguio Cathedral would run until July 20 and would be attended by the papal nuncio, or Vatican ambassador to the Philippines, Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia. They were expected to fast and give alms from July 17 to 19. Mendoza said the retreat would also commemorate the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons. “They will offer prayers and penance for the sins of murder, blasphemy and sacrilege,” said Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

International Marian Association Letter to Cardinal Mueller 31 May 2017 Eminence, Gerhard Cardinal Müller Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine on Faith Piazza del S. Uffizio, 11 00193 Roma, Italy Your Eminence: We, Executive Members of the International Marian Association, which consti- tutes over 100 theologians, cardinals, bishops, clergy, religious and lay leaders from 5 continents, wish to, first of all, thank you for the many excellent and courageous articulations and defenses of our holy Catholic Faith, as contained in your recently released, The Cardinal Müller Report. At the same time, we are obliged to express to you our grave concern regarding your comment from the text when you state: “(for example, the Church … does not call her [Mary] “co-redeemer,” because the only Redeemer is Christ, and she herself has been redeemed sublimiore modo, as Lumen Gentium [n. 53] says, and serves this redemption wrought exclusively by Christ… (p. 133). You unfortunately refer to this term as an example of false exaggeration: “falsely exaggerating per excessum, attributing to the Virgin what is not attributable to her” (Ibid.). Your Eminence, in making this statement, albeit as a private theologian since a public interview carries no authoritative or magisterial status, you have publicly stated: 1) a theologically and historically erroneous position, since the Church undeni- ably has and does call Mary a co-redeemer; and 2) a position which, in itself, materially dissents from the repeated and authoritative teachings of the Papal Magisterium, the historical teachings from your own Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (Holy Office)and other Vatican Congregations; the pre- and post-conciliar teachings of the Magisterium as expressed through numerous cardinals, bishops and national episcopal conferences; teachings of the broader Church, inclusive of multiple can- onized saints and blessed who all do, in fact, assent to and theologically expand upon the authentic Magisterial teachings of the Church concerning Mary as a co- redeemer.

  • Mga Milagro Ng Birheng Maria (Miracles of the Virgin Mary): Symbolism and Expression of Marian Devotion in the Philippines
Mga Milagro ng Birheng Maria (Miracles of the Virgin Mary): Symbolism and Expression of Marian devotion in the Philippines Mark Iñigo M. Tallara, Ph.D. Candidate National University of Singapore SUMMARY This paper is about Catholicism in the Philippines, highlighting the events, and objects on the popular devotion to the Birheng Maria (Virgin Mary), that could give fresh look onto the process of formulating an alternative discourse on religious piety and identity formation. This study also calls for more scholarly attention on the historical and religious connection between Spain, Mexico, and the Philippines, focusing on the legacies of the Manila Galleon that through them we can better appreciate the Latin American dimension of Filipino Catholicism. In addition to the goods, the Manila Galleon facilitated the first transpacific people to people exchange and their ideas, customs, and most importantly the aspects of religious life. This study will examine the symbolism and expression of Filipinos’ devotion to the miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage) or popularly known as the Black Virgin Mary of Antipolo1. What are the motivations of the devotees to the Black Virgin? How has the popular devotion to the Virgin Mary changed overtime? Observing a particular group of devotees and their practices could provide materials for the study of pilgrimage and procession. Then apply those features and analysis in order to formulate a method that is suitable for the study of popular piety in the Philippines. Although the origin of the devotion to the Black Virgin Mary of Antipolo is central to my arguments, the study will also take a broader consideration of the origins of Marianism in the Philippines.

  • Annual Report 2008-2009
MESSAGE The theme of the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference 33rd General Assembly & Annual Meeting on July 10, 2009 “Areas of Cooperation Between Business and the Institutional Church in the Philippines Towards Human Development” calls for men of the cloth and men and women of capital to play a pivotal role in transforming society. BBC believes that both Church and Business could cooperatively seek solutions to the problems of development. To fully understand what the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference for Human Development is all about, one must first go back to its beginning in 1971 when 35 Bishops and an equal number of businessmen gathered in a conference in Baguio City to seek solutions to the problems of development in the Philippines. Someone once said that the purpose of BBC is to “make better Christians of businessmen and better businessmen out of the Bishops”. Though he may have been facetious, there must have been some grain of truth in this simplification of BBC’s reason for being. But what distinguishes BBC from other business and religious organizations is the interaction among its members who come from distinct backgrounds but share skills and strengths to achieve the common goal of total human development. BBC’s initiatives have been driven and informed by the realities of continual change. It recognizes that partnerships are essential to our efforts to continue to regain its momentum, to rebuild its energy. Business and the Church need to be strategic partners for the good of those that they work for both on the national and regional/diocesan levels to help alleviate them from poverty to prosperity.

  • Feminine Power and Catholic Appropriation in the Early Spanish Philippines
‘SHE SERVES THE LORD’ FEMININE POWER AND CATHOLIC APPROPRIATION IN THE EARLY SPANISH PHILIPPINES A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI’I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY MAY 2018 By Steven James Fluckiger Thesis Committee: Vina A. Lanzona, Chairperson Barbara Watson Andaya Fabio López Lázaro ABSTRACT This study examines sixteenth and seventeenth century Catholic missionaries in the Philippine Islands appropriating feminine power and social power wielded by indigenous feminine figures to expand Catholic influence and authority. During initial contact, missionaries encountered an island chain dominated by indigenous animism that was headed by the maganito, the animist leaders who were typically female. To supplant this, they used indigenous women and the bayog, maganitos who were assigned the male sex at birth but took on a feminine persona, to act as a spiritual leader and appropriated their social and feminine power to build up the Catholic church and to diminish the influence of animist traditions. The study looks at the role these feminine figures, women and the bayog, played in the Christianization process and the influence they had in their communities. The powers these feminine figures wielded included their status as spiritual figures in their societies, their ability to own and control wealth, their role as owners of slaves, their leverage in marital and sexual relationships, and their influence as upper-class members of society. Through these figures, missionaries converted many indigenous people and encouraged them to remain loyal to the Catholic faith and the Church.
