Annual Report 2008-2009 MESSAGE The theme of the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference 33rd General Assembly & Annual Meeting on July 10, 2009 “Areas of Cooperation Between Business and the Institutional Church in the Philippines Towards Human Development” calls for men of the cloth and men and women of capital to play a pivotal role in transforming society. BBC believes that both Church and Business could cooperatively seek solutions to the problems of development. To fully understand what the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference for Human Development is all about, one must first go back to its beginning in 1971 when 35 Bishops and an equal number of businessmen gathered in a conference in Baguio City to seek solutions to the problems of development in the Philippines. Someone once said that the purpose of BBC is to “make better Christians of businessmen and better businessmen out of the Bishops”. Though he may have been facetious, there must have been some grain of truth in this simplification of BBC’s reason for being. But what distinguishes BBC from other business and religious organizations is the interaction among its members who come from distinct backgrounds but share skills and strengths to achieve the common goal of total human development. BBC’s initiatives have been driven and informed by the realities of continual change. It recognizes that partnerships are essential to our efforts to continue to regain its momentum, to rebuild its energy. Business and the Church need to be strategic partners for the good of those that they work for both on the national and regional/diocesan levels to help alleviate them from poverty to prosperity. A willingness to see each other’s perspective is essential to developing a mature relationship between these two vital sectors. The key test of this maturity will be their better integration with the local church at the parish and diocesan level. Institution and charisma are co-essential in the life of the church. The cooperation and fruitful dialogue of business and the church may contribute to making the lay faithful ever more aware of their mission in the Church, especially within the parish community, which is a family of Christian families. Most of us live our apostolate and our mission in the everyday life of our families and our workplace. This is where the laity is going to be really engaged in the church’s work of evangelization. As we review the strides made by BBC over the past thirty-eight years, we see much reason to rejoice and to look forward with optimism to the future. We believe that with a fruitful cooperation and with God’s help, this undertaking will succeed! VICENTE R. JAYME Honorary Chairman 2008-2009 BBC Annual Report 1 MESSAGE Over the last 38 years, the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference for Human Development has played a unique and vital role in the pursuit and promotion of total human development in coordination with various sectors of society. We believe that partnership between these two highly influential sectors of society – Church and Business - must be continuously rekindled. To reinvigorate this partnership, BBC adopted as theme for the July 10, 2009 33rd General Assembly and Annual Meeting “AREAS OF COOPERATION BETWEEN BUSINESS AND THE INSTITUTIONAL CHURCH IN THE PHILIPPINES TOWARDS HUMAN DEVELOPMENT”. In retrospect, BBC’s Consensus Statement in 1971, which formed the basis of BBC’s establishment, shows that many of the conditions that existed in those pre-Martial Law years persist, and is as relevant today as it was 38 years ago. It describes how the “Institutional Church” (the Church as an organiza- tion with both physical and human resources) and Business could complement each other. To quote from that Statement: Sec I. The Church must necessarily concern itself with the development of people: economic, social, political, cultural and spiritual. Sec. II. The institutional church leaders can help the business community by conveying to it where and in what ways the resources of the private sector can be most effectively employed to advance national development. BBC wants to renew and widen that “fruitful dialogue”. Meaningful cooperation between Business and the Institutional Church, nationally and locally, is more needed now than ever before. BBC has also launched an Action Program for establishment of new BBC Chapters in interested dioceses. The Program will institutionalize and widen interaction of Bishops with local business communities for social action, better local governance and spiritual development. BBC’s commitment to social change remains firm and must be continuously reinvigorated. ABP. ANTONIO J. LEDESMA, D.D. VICENTE T. ‘It seems life no longer has any value nowadays’ Church starts days of prayer against ‘blasphemers, murderers’ in nationwide gatherings 05:18 AM July 18, 2018 Church people light candles during a gathering in Manila to pray for an end to killings. —GRIG C. MONTEGRANDE Leaders of the Catholic Church on Monday presided over a thinly veiled counterattack against President Rodrigo Duterte’s assaults on the country’s most dominant religion and God himself, marking the start of days of prayer for protection against what a Church statement said were blasphemers and murderers. In Baguio City, at least 800 bishops and priests from parishes in Northern Luzon gathered for a weeklong retreat in response to a call made by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) to storm the heavens with prayers to end attacks on the Church and a cycle of violence that has alarmed many. Vatican represented This was the first time in decades that dioceses in Northern Luzon held a retreat together, said Fr. Oliver Mendoza, rector of Mary Help of Christian Theology Seminary in San Fabian town, Pangasinan province. The retreat at the Baguio Cathedral would run until July 20 and would be attended by the papal nuncio, or Vatican ambassador to the Philippines, Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia. They were expected to fast and give alms from July 17 to 19. Mendoza said the retreat would also commemorate the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons. “They will offer prayers and penance for the sins of murder, blasphemy and sacrilege,” said Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

  • Filipinos Usher in Christmas with Predawn Masses
Filipinos usher in Christmas with predawn Masses Misa de gallo tradition begins on Dec 16 despite devastation brought by Typhoon Melor. Misa de gallo (Mass of the rooster), a predawn Mass that ushers in the Christmas season is onw of the most joyous and crowded celebrations in the Philippines. Heavy rains and floods brought about by Typhoon Melor failed to dampen the spirits of Filipinos who flocked to churches around the country to attend the traditional Misa de gallo, (Mass of the rooster), or predawn Masses, that usher in Christmas in the Philippines. "Nothing can stop us from attending Mass," said Arturo Manalang, a 55-year old farmer from the town of Porac in Pampanga province. He believes that if one completes all nine days of the Misa de Gallo and makes a wish as part of the prayers, it will come true. At least nine people were killed and hundreds of thousands evacuated when floods from Typhoon Melor inundated villages and cities in the central and northern parts of the country, according to disaster officials. Floods also brought Manila to a standstill Dec. 15, prompting schools to shut in the capital and nearby cities the following day. "Many people will spend Christmas in evacuation centers without power and potable water," said Jonathan Baldo, a disaster official in Northern Samar province. He said it might take up to four months to restore electricity in some parts of the province. Filipinos attend the traditional Misa de gallo (Mass of the rooster), or predawn Mass, that ushers in the celebration of Christmas, in Davao City on Dec.

CBCP APRIL 15 - 28, 2019, VOL 23, NO.Monitor 08 [email protected] PROTAGONIST OF TRUTH, PROMOTER OF PEACE Abp. Soc calls priests to be ‘real witnesses amid threats By Roy Lagarde PRIESTS are called to face “these dreary times of darkness” by being “real witnesses” amid “an angry disbelieving society,” a church official said on Holy Thursday. Those priests, said Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen- Dagupan, should also not be afraid to die or be killed for the Lord. “Brother priests, make friends with death. Let death not threaten you,” Villegas said in his Chrism Mass homily at the St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Dagupan City. “The call to the priesthood is a call to die. It is clear. There is no priesthood without victimhood,” he said. To drive his point, the archbishop said that there’s nothing surprising with priests being threatened with death. In the first place, he said that priests should not have accepted ordination if they were afraid to die or be killed. “Death is not a threat. It is our destiny,” said Villegas, who is also a former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. • Muslim-Christian Dialog in the Philippines: Methods and Contexts
Muslim-Christian Dialog in the Philippines: Methods and Contexts Eduardo M. Domingo, Ph.D. Theology and Religious Education Department De La Salle University-Manila Introduction In every culture, there are underlying systems. The geography of the place with its mountains, seas and terrains (physical or material), the way the people live (economic, social, political), the way people feel and think (cultural, religious), the way people share and celebrate life (world-view, spirituality) are but some of these components. Although some may be tempted to see these as independent in a given culture, these systems are linked. In fact, they intersect one another in the given and concrete context of culture, thus, engaging in a dynamic fusion we call life.1 Such is the reality of Dialog and the methods on the Muslim-Christian Dialog adopted in Mindanao, Philippines. It is therefore important to see and to understand these methods in their proper contexts. Here, we would understand ‘context’ as the ‘individual and collective experience,’ as it includes the experiences of the personal life of a person or group. Context also represents a complex reality. It encompasses a combination of several realities such as social location, history, political forces, social changes, cultural shifts and religious systems.2 And it is also in this framework of contexts that I will try to describe the methods on Muslim- Christian Dialog in Mindanao, Philippines 1960's to the 1990's. Philippine Context The Philippines as a Nation and a Political Community The Philippines as a political community lacks the characteristics of a mature and strong state.
