1755 Des Peres Road Saint Anthony the Great as a Model for our Lives Town & Country, MO 63131-1405 By Protopresbyter Fr. George Papavarnavas Phone: 314-966-2255 Kitchen: 314-966-6720 Saint Anthony, the professor of the desert, is one of the few who has received Web Site: www.assumptiongoc.org the epithet "Great". Truly he was a great athlete of spiritual athletics and triumphant in his struggles against delusion, sin, the devil and the many-formed Fr. Anastasios Theodoropoulos passions. His life, which was authored by another with the epithet "Great", his Email: [email protected] contemporary Saint Athanasius, the Archbishop of Alexandria, is beyond Office Manager: Diane Sieckmann wondrous and enviable. The study of it should be food for all those who crave to Email: [email protected] experience the grandeur of life in Christ. Anthony the Great, with his asceticism and unceasing prayer, reached the Secretary: Diakonissa Kristen Vogt pinnacle of spiritual life and acquired true wisdom. He calls himself "idiot" and Email: [email protected] was uneducated, but he had as a teacher the wisdom from above by the Spirit. From this wisdom, enlightened and inspired, he gave the most wise responses to various Christians who sought to benefit their souls, as seen in many parts of the Dates to Remember in January book called Gerontikon. Apart from these he also left the "One Hundred and Seventy Chapters", which are included in the Philokalia and offer great benefit to January 1: those that read them. Circumcision of Christ Asceticism is the effort a person makes to apply the will of God in their life. St. Basil the Great It is an effort to transform their passions, to be purified of their passions, that they

January 5 may love "with all their soul and heart" both God and mankind. For it is Eve of Theophany impossible to love anyone truly while dominated by the passions and especially by selfishness, which oppresses man and makes life difficult. Self-love is the January 6 irrational love for ourselves and from this, as from a mother, is born all the Theophany passions, such as pride, vanity, sensuality, avarice, etc. In our days, we often talk about love, peace and friendship between people January 7 and nations, and other things like this. All this is good, but the question is how St. John the Baptist can we love others and be at peace with them while we are enslaved to the passions and cannot attain peace even with ourselves? Love, according to Saint January 17 Maximus the Confessor, is the grandchild of dispassion. It is born and nurtured St. Anthony the Great within a heart which has been purified, or at least is struggling persistently and January 18 laboriously to be purified from the passions. Then love is selfless and resilient in Athanasios & Cyril, adversity and difficulties. It does not have an expiration date, but lasts beyond the Patricians of Alexandria grave, it is "coeval with the ages". In contrast, passionate love is false and lasts as long as it is able to serve and feed or be fed from the passions. And how is it January 20 possible to have strength and durability, as conditions of life change, interests Righteous Efthemios change and the human body wears out and is altered? The biggest problem of transition societies are human passions. Passionate January 25 people cause huge problems in the family and social environment, but also wars St. Gregory the Theologian and messiness around the world when it to people who hold office and power. As emphasized by His Eminence our Metropolitan Hierotheos: "Sin has January 30 social implications. Sick people make social institutions sick and then social in- Three Hierarchs stitutions make people more sick." Therefore, the change of human societies for the better, or rather their humanization, requires the spiritual regeneration of their

2018 Parish Council citizens, which can happen through asceticism, prayer, the sacramental life and Fr. Joseph Strzelecki general obedience to the Church and ecclesiastical institutions. Fr. Anastasios Theodoropoulos Saint Anthony, by his spiritual struggles against the spirits of wickedness and Scott Thompson, President pride, acquired lofty humility. However, God revealed that there was a Greg Simos, Vice President Elefteria Marcou, Secretary shoemaker in Alexandria who surpassed him in the spiritual life, which was Gus Harris, Treasurer sent to teach him his spiritual way of life. And as Elder Sophrony Sakharov Daniel Gantner, Carol Marshall, Pam Martin, notes: "He learned from this to think inwardly: 'Everyone can be saved, but I Samia Rabie, Pete Regopoulos, Vasilios Simos, alone am separated'." These words can only be endured by those who have Greg Simos, Sotirios Sotiriou, Tom Stamos, Chris Tsoubanos, Nick Tsoubanos, Tonis conquered the extreme height of humility. Zafiropoulos Humility is the mother of love and all the other virtues. The Venerable One Acolytes loved everyone sacrificially and prayed for the entire inhabited world. Alban Mosher, John Nicholas Characteristic is the way he communicated with people, and especially with the Adult Orthodox Christians (18 years +): afflicted people. With his princely love he truly comforted and supported them. Diane Sieckmann Bible Study Once a theologian/writer visited him, named Didymus, who was blind, but as it Fr. Daniel Morton appears the eyes of his soul were opened and, among other things, Anthony Bookstore said: "Do not be upset or troubled, Didymus, by the fact that you are missing Christos Tsiaklides, Diakonissa Kristen Vogt your physical eyes, because you lack such eyes with which flies and mosquitoes Chanters Steve Bellos can be seen. They do not disappoint people nor drive them to despair, but Church Tours rather they increase their love for life, and the life in Christ, and repel from the Janice Hazeltine soul the mist, increase their joy, strengthen their faith and increase hope. American Clergy Come Through for Kenyan Bishop! You Can Too! by Fr. Chris Rowe (10/18/2018)

Here is a story that was shared by Fr. Chris Rowe, OCMC’s Development Officer, who participated in the Assembly of the OCA Diocese of the Midwest last week. This is a great example of the deep relationships we aim for as Orthodox Christians, supporting our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world: The 57th Assembly of the Diocese of the Midwest was held in Lansing, IL, October 8-10, 2018. His Grace Bishop Neofitos of the Kenyan Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya joined the cler- gy and faithful at our Assembly. During Bp. Neofitos’s presentation to the assembly, His Grace shared some of the challenges that are faced in the diocese. The Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya is in a rural and agricultur- al part of Kenya, north of Nairobi. One major challenge the diocese regularly faces is how to support the clergy, and one It can be a struggle for His Grace Bishop critical need is that of medical care. To illustrate, His Grace Neophytos to financially support the priests of the shared a recent event with the Assembly. Unfortunately, there is no health insurance available to the clergy there, so they brought their problem to His Grace. He told them to go get the surgery, and that the diocese would pay for it. His Grace shared that there is little in the treasury of his mission diocese, but he couldn’t say no to this need. The surgery ended up costing $3,000 (US). He shared that he will always offer whatever he has to care for the flock that is entrusted to him. As His Grace took his seat, someone from the Assembly came to the microphone and suggested that we take a col- lection right there at the Assembly. Through the generosity of those gathered at the Assembly, a generous gift of $3,387 was made to the diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya! Papadhia Rispher’s surgery was paid for and a little more. A heartfelt thanks goes out to the Diocese of the Midwest from the Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya. This generosity is very inspiring, and I pray that we in the Church can always continue to express our unity and support Orthodox clergy in the mission field. Please prayerfully consider helping the priests ff the Nyeri Diocese, and around the world, with a gift to OCMC's Support a Mission Priest (SAMP) program.

As always, if you have any questions, would like to be part of the Mission Team St. Louis, or if you would like to help our missionaries, please feel free to contact Rosie Hartley, 618-447-9688. Thank you for your continued support!

“’A faithful friend is a strong defense’ (Ecclus 6:14); for when things are going well with you, he is a good counselor and a sympathetic collaborator, while when things are going badly, he is the truest of helpers and a most compassionate supporter.” - St. Maximus the Confessor, (Philokalia II).

The goal is to pull together local clergy, advocates, and friends of FOCUS from across the St. Louis metro area to discuss a strategic fundraising plan for the ministries for 2019 and beyond. Your participation is requested and we are asking you to invite anyone from your community that you feel would have an interest in being a part of the long-term growth and expansion of the ministries here in St. Louis. We will discuss the plans for the ministry in the coming couple of years, celebrate the existing foundation of community volunteers and events supporting it, and brainstorm how to further firm up this foundation. The goal is to end the evening with the beginnings of a blueprint to sustain the work that the Lord has begun at Focus. Please RSVP via email to [email protected] so that we can plan for how many are coming to the meeting. God bless you and thank you for supporting and praying for the ministry of Focus Gateway City. It is a better thing to save souls for the Lord than to save treasures. He who sent forth his apostles without gold had not need of gold to form his Church. The Church possesses gold, not to hoard, but to scatter abroad and come to the aid of the unfortunate. St Ambrose of Milan

From the Orthodox Study Bible The Gospel of St John 15:1-2

1 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, un- less you abide in Me.

15:1 The vine is a symbol of Israel (see Is. 5:1-7; Jer. 2:21). In contrast to disobedient and unfruitful Israel, Jesus calls Himself the true vine which, together with its branches, constitutes a new and fruitful people of God, the Church. 15:4 Abiding in Christ is living out our union with Him in faith, baptism, love, obedience, and Eucharist. The figure of the vine and branches shows: (1) our union with Christ is intimate and real - we are a new people in Christ; (2) life flows from the vine to the branches - abiding in Christ is not static nor “positional,” but dynamic and vitalizing; and (3) the fruit we bear is both good works and mission (v. 16, “go and bear fruit”; see 17:18). Those who do not abide in Christ bear no fruit, and are cut off from Him (v.6).

For Consideration

It is fruit, fruit and fruit alone that the Lord seeks from man, that living tree. Good fruit is a God-loving heart, but bad fruit is a heart filled with self-love. All other that a man has and enjoys - status, power, honour, health, wealth, learning - these are no more than the leaves of the tree. “Every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire” (Matt. 3:10). Even non-Christian peoples rate good works above fine words. So much the more must it be the rule among followers of Christ. At a certain gathering of Athenians, at which envoys from were present, one old man was going from bench to bench, trying to find somewhere to sit down. The Athenians mocked at him, and no-one gave him his seat. When the old man drew near to the Spartans, they all leapt to their feet and offered him their places. Seeing this, the Athenians expressed their gratitude to the Spartans in well-rounded phrases. To this the Spartans replied:’ The Athenians know what is good, but do not do it.’ He who does good is like a tree that bears good fruit for its owner. And the well-spring of goodness in man is a good, God-loving heart.
