INTRODUCTION. The project is part of a long range program in the area of process control [1]. Earlier results are reported in [2], [3], [4] and [5]. A detailed program for the acti vity during 1970/71 is presented in [6]. Most research at the Division of Automatic Control has been centered around the process control project. The work has been organized so that three scientists direct ly supported by the Swedish Board for Technical Develop ment (STU) have acted as project leaders in System ~den tification (I. Gustavsson), Computational Control (K. Martensson) and Real Time Computing (J. Wieslander). One research engineer, C. Kallstr6m, has been providing prog ramming support. Apart from the four members directly supported by STU important contributions have also been given by students and staff of the institute. The research plan presented in [6] has been followed. Due ~o hard volontary work by B. Wittenmark the research on adaptive systems has been carried out according to plans· in spite of a significant reduction in the grant originally applied for. Significant results have· thus been obtained in the area of self tuning regulators. The access to the real time computer installation has signi ficantly contributed to the progress of the project. Within the framework of the real time computing project programs for interactive design of control systems have _been developed. These programs have proven surprisingly effective design tools. During the year the process cont rol laboratory has also been provided with flexible ln terfaces and additional processes. The real time compu~ ting lab6ratory was used for 3200 hours during the year. The interaction between the research and the graduate -.~ 2 0 program has increased. Most term papers for the courses in "Process Control ln the Paper Industry" and "Software for Online Control" were of direct interest for the re search project. In collaboration with users and manufacturers of process control equipment and STU a seminar on process control was also arranged. The practical details were handled by the secretary for industrial liaison. In collaboration with Mr. K. Anvret of Svenska Teknologforeningen we also arranged a new course on "Processdatorer och processreg lering" . .. 3 . 2. SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION. The research on system identification has mainly con tinued along the lines in the research program [1], i.e. o comparison of different identification methods, par ticularly when applied to data from real processes, o development of algorithms and program packages making identification applicable ln practice to model build ing of industrial processes, o studies of theoretical problems in connection with identification and parameter estimation, 0 application of identification and parameter estima tion techniques to model building of different pro cesses, including design of suitable experiments and model analysis. Off-line methods as well as real time identification methods are studied. The project has now reached a state which enables us to identify single input single output linear systems with relatively small effort. The experien ces gained from identification of many different proces ses make it possible to design suitable experimental con ditions, to handle data efficiently, to choose appropri ate identification methods and to analyse the obtained mo dels. Also problems with identification of multivariable and nonlinear systems have been considered but still many problems remain before the identification of such complex systems can be performed in a similarly efficient way as .single input single output systems. 4. Comparison of Different Identification Methods. A lot of experiences has been gained from the identifi cation of many real processes by different methods. So far some of the experiences have been reported, e.g. in Gustavsson, I.: Comparison of Different Methods for Identification of Industrial Processes, Automatica, Vol. 8, pp. 127- 142, (1972), and in Astrom, K.J., and Gustavsson, I.: Identification and Modelling of Industrial Processes, Colloque Franco Suedois Conduit de Precedes, IRIA, Paris, October, 1971. Astrom, K.J.: Modelling and Identification of Power System Components in E. Handschin ed. "Real-Time Control of Electric Power Systems", Elsevier, Amster dam- London - New York, 1972. Comp~risons of different identification methods are alsb found in the reports Eklund, K.: Linear Drum Boiler-Turbine Models, Report 7117, Nov., 1971, Astrom, K.J., and Kallstrom, C.: Identification and Modelling of Ship Dynamics, Report 7202, March, 1972, Lindahl, S., and Ljung, L.: Identification of Power Generator Dynamics from Normal Operating Data, Report 7210, May, 1972. In most cases only single input, single output systems have been considered. For such systems the maximum like lihood method has given the best results for black box models. On the other hand it has been found that it may 5. be of great importance for accuracy etc. to exploit avail able a priori physical knowledge of the process. It has been pointed out that comparisons between model parame ters or between transient or frequency responses for dif ferent models may not be relevant if the ultimate aim of the identification lS to synthesize a control strategy from the model. The estimation of impulse response functions with the Fast Fourier Transform method and via prewhitening and computation of the cross correlation function has been compared. In general both methods give fair estimates, but they fail if the impulse response slowly fades out. The Fast Fourier Transform method fails if the signal to noise ratio is less than approximately one. For a low 41' noise level the Fast Fourier Transform method gives a considerably better accuracy, even for white noise in put. In general neither method converges asymptotically to the true values. A preliminary report !Ljung, L.: Pilot Estimation of Impulse Response Func tions has been written. The methods have been applied to the power generator data. Programs. Subroutines to be used for different identification me thods are available on the computer Univac 1108 at Lunds Datacentral in Lund ln the program library built up by our division. For some methods, e.g. the maximum likeli hood identification of discrete, linear, multiple input, single output systems and the parameter estimation in linear sta!e space models, more elaborated program packages, 6 . for identification and model analysis have been developed. Those program packages make it easier for the user to perform identification. Some of the programs have also been written for the pro cess computer PDP 15. Experiences from identification

Parallel History Project on Cooperative Security (PHP) January 2011 E-Dossier, Submarine Intrusions in Swedish Waters During the 1980s www.php.isn.ethz.ch By Bengt Gustafsson Submarine Intrusions in Swedish Waters During the 1980s By Bengt Gustafsson The Truth is in the Eye of the Beholder Conspiracy theories, alternative explanations, and urban legends frequently play important roles in shaping public perceptions of high-profile events in history. Such alternative views are sometimes based on ideological preconceptions, the failure to appreciate the complexity of issues, or specific preconceptions about individuals, occupations, or institutions. In Sweden, the reception of what is known as ‘the submarine issue’ is a prominent example of such dynamics. The Swedish armed forces assert that from the middle of the 1970s until autumn 1992, foreign submarines repeatedly conducted intrusions far into Swedish territorial waters, including in the direction of the country’s naval bases. There was only one occasion on which the nation responsible for the incursion was successfully identified – when a Soviet Whiskey class submarine was discovered to have run aground in a bay just east of Karlskrona Naval Base in southern Sweden and was found on the morning of 28 October 1981. Journalists covered the event under headlines such as ‘Whiskey on the Rocks’. In Sweden, this event is known as the ‘U-137-incidenten’ *‘U-137 Incident’+ after the temporary designation given to submarine S-363 by the Soviet Union for the operation. In September of the previous year, the last Swedish destroyer in service, HMS Halland, had been deployed against a pair of submarines that were discovered in the outer Stockholm archipelago.

A comparative study of underwater intrusions and media’s portrait of Sweden in terms of securitization Amanda Backman Words: 10288 Abstract Vessels have on numerous occasions entered Swedish territorial waters. Two incident of this sort occurred in October 1982 and October 2014. In this thesis I will conduct a comparative study of how these events reflects on how Sweden are portrayed in terms of securitization from a media perspective. This study have been conducted by a content analysis of articles form three Swedish newspapers from the years 1982 and 2014. By analysing the frequency as well as the context of certain attributes I have been able to conclude that there has been a shift in language in terms of securitization in 2014, compared to 1982. • Electronic Business: Implementation and Effects
ELECTRONIC BUSINESS: IMPLEMENTATION AND EFFECTS Odd Fredriksson E-Business, also called digital business, has an increasingly recurring role in daily transaction facilitation in marketing channels and dyadic trading rela- tionships. These developments imply that the findings of this thesis are more relevant than ever. Managers in various positions need to deeply understand ELECTRONIC BUSINESS the mutual interrelations between marketing and IT use conditions. IMPLEMENTATION AND EFFECTS The thesis aims at answering two research questions: RQ 1: What are the conditions influencing e-Business system implementation processes? RQ 2: What e-Business-enabled performance effects result from e-Business system use, and how does the use of e-Business systems affect dyadic per- formance? The thesis comprises five case studies focusing on different e-Business forms in four Swedish marketing channel contexts. The five empirical studies were conducted in different contexts (B2B, B2G and B2C), exploring different lev- els of analysis, and span across a 20-year period, from 1988 to 2008. A literature review was conducted after the five case studies were published. Knowledge and findings identified from mainly the relationship view and information systems literature were synthesised and applied to the five publi- Fredriksson Odd cations in retrospective. The overall conclusion drawn from this thesis is the crucial importance of hu- man success conditions. The degree of commitment and pro-active actions of human beings – individually and collectively among all stakeholders involved – and their competencies decisively influence the degree to which the e- Business implementation and diffusion process will be successful, and in turn the business value outcomes that can be attained.

Controlling the Battlefield: Computing and Operational Command in the Swedish Armed Forces, 1966−1989 Johan Gribbe Div. of History of Science and Technology, KTH 100 44 Stockholm, Sweden [email protected] Abstract. In the late 1960s, the Swedish Defence Staff initiated the development of a computerized command and control system that was later to be known as the LEO-system. From the mid-1970s to 1989, more than two hundred million SEK were spent on the project, which involved private computer consultants and with military staff officers acting as project leaders and customers. In the end, however, only the intelligence application was introduced and put into operational use in the Swedish intelligence service during the 1990s. This paper will tell the story of the LEO-system and outline some of the reasons behind its failure. It is based on a witness seminar held at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters in Stockholm on January 15, 2008. Keywords: Cold war, main frame computer, military technology, security 1 Introduction In the late 1960s, the Swedish Defence Staff initiated the development of a computerized command and control system that was later to be known as the LEO- system. The decision followed a reorganization of the national command structure and the system was intended to help central and regional military headquarters conduct wartime operations. Each headquarter was to have one LEO terminal system, with a number of workstations, containing information about all aspects of the battlefield. Information about friendly and enemy forces, fuel and ammunition supplies, were to be stored in a central database and a secure messaging system was to provide fast and reliable communications.
