Chr., also an den Iden des März, während einer Senatssitzung mit 23 Dolchstichen ermordet. Nach Plutarch (Caes. 63,3) wurde er zuvor von einem Seher gewarnt, er solle sich vor den Iden des März hüten. Am Weg zum Senat soll Caesar zu ebendiesem gesagt haben: „Die Iden des März sind nun da“, woraufhin dieser antwortete: „Ja, sie sind da, aber sie sind noch nicht vorüber“. 2 Ehrenwörtliche Erklärung Ich erkläre ehrenwörtlich, dass ich die vorliegende Arbeit selbstständig und ohne fremde Hilfe verfasst, andere als die angegebenen Quellen nicht benutzt und die den Quellen wörtlich oder inhaltlich entnommenen Stellen als solche kenntlich gemacht habe. Darüber hinaus möchte ich mich bei meinem lieben Freund Adrian bedanken, der mich mit viel Geduld und Zeit moralisch unterstützt hat. 4 Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit den Todesdarstellungen in Caesars Werk „Bellum Gallicum“. Es werden folgende Forschungsfragen untersucht: Wie wird der Tod beschrieben? Ist die Beschreibung realistisch oder gibt es vielleicht Unstimmigkeiten? Könnte der Autor mit der Darstellung des Todesfalles womöglich einen bestimmten Zweck verfolgen? Zu Beginn der Bearbeitung dieser Fragen stehen einleitende Überlegungen zu Caesars Leben sowie zu seinem Werk. Anschließend werden die sieben Bücher in chronologischer Reihenfolge beschrieben und interpretiert. Daraufhin folgen Ausführungen über die Bilanz des Gallischen Krieges sowie auch eine tabellarische Darstellung der Verluste, welche ebendiese zusammenfassen und veranschaulichen soll. Abschließend werden in einem Resümee die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit aufgezeigt. Infolgedessen wird dargelegt, ob die zentralen Fragen beantwortet werden konnten. Im Hintergrund dieser Überlegungen steht die These, dass Caesar den Tod bewusst inszeniert und gekonnt in sein Werk einsetzt, um den Leser in eine bestimmte Richtung zu lenken. 5 Abstract The work in hand attends to the portrayal of death in Caesar’s opus „Bellum Gallicum“. The following research questions will be focused on: How is death described? Is the depiction done in a realistic way or are there any discrepancies? Is there a hidden intention by representing death in this way? Firstly, it will be necessary to reflect about Caesar’s life and his work. Secondly, it is helpful to take a closer look on the seven books in a chronological order and to interpret them. Thirdly, there is a chapter treating the result of the war including a collection of the casualties listed in tabular form. Finally, it is required to summarize the outcome and demonstrate if an answer to the research questions could be found. Dem Leser begegnen geradezu abscheuliche Szenarien, die zwar oft nahezu absurd erscheinen, dennoch aber bewusst Abscheu oder Furcht erzeugen. Diese Passagen verfolgen meist eine bestimmte Intention und sind klar als narrative Strategie zu verstehen, die einer langen Tradition folgen. So kann bereits die Anzahl der getöteten Feinde äußerst zweckdienlich sein, da eine große Masse an ermordeten Gegnern auch das eigene Ansehen stärkt. In diesem Kontext erscheint ein schneller Tod äußerst einleuchtend, weshalb meistens nur der Todesstoß künstlerisch ausgestaltet wird. Die Todesarten sind hierbei ebenfalls beschränkt, da sowohl verschiedene Motive als auch Formulierungen immer wieder auftreten. Beliebt ist zudem die Beschreibung von Einzelkämpfen, bei welchen die Gewalt geradezu als Zweck der Aktion

KEYWORDS Julius Caesar, Commentarii, Bellum Gallicum, Bellum Civile, Sound, Battle Descriptions ABSTRACT (English) In recent years, we have witnessed how scholars have re-read and re- examined Caesar’s commentaries on the Gallic and Civil wars, focusing more on the works’ literary merits. In this contribution to the discussion I aim to show how Caesar deploys the motif of hearing to develop his narrative of battle description. Therefore I single out specific words denoting sound such as shouting (clamor), voices (vox), and also the use of rumours (rumor, fama). Caesar probably wished to give his audience a fuller, engaging portrayal of the battlefield, along with its dangers and terrors, so that we, his readers, are able not only to see through the general’s eyes, but also to hear the sounds of war. Sounds are thus significant in conveying the tense atmosphere of war, especially since soldiers are naturally frightened by what they cannot see, but only hear. Yet in this chaos of shouts and voices Caesar would have us remember that only one voice can ease the fears of the soldiers and restore order: the voice of the commander, imperator Caesar.     Teaching Classical Languages Volume 7, Issue 1 Sellers 49 Oil for the Wheels in Teaching Caesar: Yesterday and Today1 Ryan G. Sellers Memphis University School ABSTRACT This article examines some ways of enlivening Caesar’s De bello Gallico in the classroom. It begins by considering the pedagogical methods of Mary E. Harwood, a Latin teacher in the early 1900s. Since Ms. Harwood’s students often found Cae- sar to be a boring, irrelevant text, she developed some creative teaching methods to lessen her own sense of frustration and to help her students better understand, visualize, and appreciate the text. The author argues that even though some of Ms. Harwood’s early twentieth-century strategies would not necessarily work in twenty-first-century Advanced Placement classrooms, her general philosophy of teaching Caesar is still quite germane. In addition to considering Ms. Harwood’s suggestions for teaching Caesar, the article also offers some examples of how the author approaches the challenges of teaching Caesar in his own AP class, in par- ticular by drawing upon popular culture and current events.     Book 5 – 54 BC Like Book 4, the AP curriculum has us enter Book 5 in mediās rēs—therefore a brief introduction to the year 54 BC is necessary. Introduction Caesar led his two legions back from Britannia in the early fall of 55 BC. When news of his expedition there reached Rome, the senate declared an unprecedented 20-day public holiday. (The previous record for a public thanksgiving granted to a general was 15 days, which also had been granted to Caesar—after the campaign against the Belgae two years earlier, in 57 BC). Caesar’s first trip to Britannia merely whetted his appetite for a second. No doubt the praise lavished on him back in Rome contributed to his desire to return to the still mostly-unexplored and little-known island. 54 BC, Part 1 – The Second Invasion of Britannia To ensure a less adversity-laden trip the second time around, Caesare showed his usual thoroughness and careful planning. He ordered the legions stationed near the northern coast of Gaul in the winter of 55-54 to construct 600 ships. This would be enough to transport 5 legions—remember that he had only had enough ships to ferry over 2 legions the previous year. Futhermore, the transports were now built according to a new design, one that made them draw less water, so that they could advance much closer to shore. On top of this, Caesar recruited 4,000 cavalry from various friendly—or intimidated—Gallic tribes. Half of the cavalry would travel with him to Britannia, and the other half would remain in Gaul, to provide support for the legions remaining there.

To date a comprehensive analysis has not been undertaken of battle, and where it has been examined by military historians, investigations have often relied on the idea that these passages are primarily designed to reconstruct the details of the historical event. The thesis instead uses case studies to show these passages are not merely an attempt to describe historical events, but are fundamentally influenced by the desire to influence the audience. This can be a simple matter of reception, whether through the building of tension in the narrative, or the creation of a compelling account of a particular battle. More often however battle is used in conjunction with the campaign narrative to create an impression, or support an argument regarding Caesarʼs interpretation of the episode, as battles are part of the interpretive structure of the text, where information conveys his self-promotional objectives. Furthermore, a major objective of these accounts is to support Caesarʼs view of the various characters portrayed, and the narrative is used to create or encourage views of the individuals and peoples involved.

Die Spuren der römischen Antike – seien es landschaftliche oder architektonische – dokumentiert er seit 2006 mit einer Großformatkame- ra rund um das Mittelmeer und weit darüber hinaus. Neben Ruinen, baulichen Resten und Landschaftsformen fotografiert Alfred Seiland auch Ausgrabungsstätten, Museen und Neuinterpretationen einst bedeutender histori- scher Bauten in Italien, Griechenland, Spanien, Frankreich, Nordafrika, in der Türkei, im Nahen Osten, in Rumänien, Bulgarien, Kroatien sowie in Deutschland, Großbritannien, den USA und Österreich. Talbert) This dissertation examines how ancient Romans dealt with the innumerable military losses that the expansion and maintenance of their empire demanded. It considers the prose writers from Polybius (c. 150 B.C.E.) through Dio Cassius (c. 230 C.E.), as well as many items from the material record, including triumphal arches, the columns of Trajan and Marcus, and other epigraphic and material evidence from Rome and throughout the empire. By analyzing just how much (or how little) the Romans focused on their military defeats and casualties of war in their cultural record, I argue that the various and specific ways that the Romans dealt with these losses form a necessary part of any attempt to explain the military success of Rome. The discussion is organized into five chapters. The first chapter describes the treatment and burial of the war dead. Chapter two considers the effect war losses had on the morale of Roman soldiers and generals.
