First edition of Avril’s narrative of his two journeys through Central Asia aim- ing to discover new overland routes to . Philippe Avril, Jesuit professor of philosophy and mathematics at Paris, was summoned by Father Ferdinand Verbi- est in Peking to join the mission there. For eight years, from 1682 to 1690, Avril travelled overland reaching North and Northwest China but ultimately failing to reach Peking. This narrative covers both journeys; the first by caravan through Syria, Kurdistan, , Persia and across the Caspian to Astrakan where he had to turn back, and the second about his attempt to cross Siberia from to China, with his return to the West through Constantinople, Moldavia, and Lithuania. Julia Carrothers served as a Presbyterian missionary in Japan between 1869 and 1877. She returned to Japan in 1903 and then provided Hasegawa with the manu- script for this book.

A manual for East India Company officers, mainly focused on their private trade compiled by Cart- wright, the Deputy Accountant-General. The extent of the Abstract suggests a remarkable range of illicit commerce. The attached list of duties to be paid on imported goods from the East Indies and China includes arrack, coffee, elephants’ teeth, various fabrics, dragon’s blood, tea, rum, etc. Officers are reminded not to land goods on Sark, Jersey, or Ireland. An order prohibiting dockers from entering ships’ holds suggests a recognised route for smuggled cargo. The numerous notes regulating bullion and bills of exchange indicate yet another area of illegitimate activity. Scarce.

Comprises a two-page print (50.5 x 36.8 cm) with one upper part depicting the exterior of the Chitose-za Theatre and a lower part showing its interior. Printed in bold and bright colours. With original colourful printed sleeve (a few small holes).

The Chitose-za Theatre in the district of Hisamatsu-chõ in Tokyo was first opened in 1873 as the Kisho-za Theatre, renamed in 1885 when Kato Ichitaro saved the theatre from bankruptcy. It burned down in 1890 but has been rebuilt more than once over the years. Since 1893 it has been known as the Meiji-za Theater which still holds kabuki and other performances. A charming guide to the Japanese Pavilion (Hõ-õ-den) at the Columbian Exposi- tion at Chicago in 1893. The different rooms of the Pavilion including furniture, art and other objects are here described and accompanied by photos. The compiler Okakura Kakuzõ was at the time the Director of Tokyo Fine Arts Academy, and later on appointed the Asian Arts Curator at the museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

First edition. The dictionary comprises twenty chapters of which some are de- voted to different trade items such as silk and cotton, furs, drugs, pharmaceutics, art objects etc. Other chapters include conversation about commodities from dif- ferent countries. In 1883 Guerin came to Peking as interpreter, and he stayed for more than twenty years in China including the last six as French consul at Tchefou (Yantai). Bensacq-Tixier, 276–78.

[EXCEPTIONAL PANORAMA OF CONSTANTINOPLE] BERGGREN, G. (Photogr.) (Attractive grand panorama view composed of fourteen photographic sections). Constantinople ca 1874–5. € 12 000

An impressive large-scale panorama about 480 cm long. Fourteen sepia-toned pho- tographs, each ca 34 x 26 cm, are joined together and mounted on a heavy paper made by the renowned French paper manufacturer Canson & Montgolfier. Re- cently the paper has been professionally restored and the whole has been laid on an Aero linen made of natural fibres and neutral p.h. (The total size is about 500 cm x 53 cm).

The panorama shows a view of approximately 270 degrees taken from the Galata Tower. Superb quality of the prints. Berggren has signed by hand at the right hand corner of the paper (no printed signatures on the photos as it usually is). We as- sume this is a special issue, perhaps made before the commercial smaller folded versions. Guillaume Berggren was born in Stockholm but lived most of his life in Constantinople, where he arrived in 1866 and stayed until his death in 1920. Émile Gallois was a French Art Deco artist who issued a series of works with different national costumes.

A collection of six double page exquisite coloured woodblock prints after paint- ings by Matsumura Goshun, repainted by Yamada Shokei. Housed in the original decorated paper envelope. Matsumura Goshun (1752–1811) was a painter of the Edo period, pupil of the painter and poet Yosa Buson and founder of the Shijô school of painting.

A beautiful pair of round hand fans painted in ink, colour and gofun on paper with handles of lacquer decorated with gold, and silk tasselled cords. The fans are deco- rated in rinpa style with a landscape scene and flowers, on the reverse one has a view of Mount Fuji and the other a bamboo scene highlighted with gold. Mounted in the original paper folders woodblock-printed in colours.Haibara, established in 1806, is one of Japan’s oldest paper merchant and still operating in Nihonbashi in Tokyo. During the Edo period Haibara became famous for the decorated round fans (uchiwa) produced as a typical souvenir at that time. A delightful pair.

[HAMMARSKJÖLD, D. / PHOTOGRAPHS] A collection of original photographs from the United Nations Press De- partment documenting Hammarskjöld’s time as General Secretary. (New York) 1953–1961. € 1 400

Dag Hammarskjöld, a Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the sec- ond Secretary-General of the United Nations 1953–61. He died in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia on his way to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis. He was awarded a posthumous Nobel Prize.

This collection contains 22 photos (25.4 x 20.5 cm) of Hammarskjöld’s time in office including photos from different UN Security Council meetings, press conferences and assemblies, and others from his official visits to Burma, Thailand, Congo and India. The photos have printed captions on the reverse. Another 29 photos were taken at his New York suite at the UN headquarters just days after his plane crash. The photos illustrate the conference room, his office, the social areas and a pri- vate area, all elegantly decorated with contemporary furniture, notable pieces of art, and his collection of books. Provenance: Count Wilhelm Hans Fredrik Wacht- meister (1923–2012), who served as the Swedish ambassador to the United States between 1974 and 1989. HASEGAWA, T. (Publ.) Second enlarged and revised Chinese edition (first 1859) of Herschel’s famous “Outlines of Astronomy”, originally published at London in 1849. Herschel was an English mathematician, astronomer, chemist and experimental photographer. His work “Outlines of Astronomy” was an enormous success and became the standard text book on astronomy during the second half of the 19th century. Alexander Wylie (1815–87) was a British missionary who arrived at Shanghai in 1847 where he became in charge of the printing press.

The two illustrators of this work, Sán- dor Nagy and Aladár (Körösfõi-) Kriesch, were the founders of the art colony at Gödöllõ, the cradle of Hungarian Art Nouveau. László Medgyes, was a Hungarian avant-garde artist who moved to Paris in 1920. There he provided scenic design for opera and theatre productions. He estab- lished a school “École Medgyes pour la Technique du Thêatre” together with the famous Hungarian architect Ernö Goldfinger. Provenance: Rezsõ Szij (1915–2006) renowned Hungarian art historian. He was the chief librarian of the Hungarian National Library, the founder of the Hungarian Association of Bibliophiles.

Abe Eishiro had an instrumental role in the preservation of traditional Japanese paper-making techniques and was the first Japanese paper-maker to be designated as a National Living Treasure. He was also an early follower of Yanagi Muneyoshi’s Japanese Arts & Crafts Movement. This work includes two pieces of paper made by Abe Eishiro, and one more sample of handmade paper by Ichibei Iwano, another National Living Treasure artist. Only one copy in OCLC (at SOAS).

First edition of Tomkinson’s informative work on the Inro. Accompanied by beau- tiful illustrations of his own collection. Inro (“seal-cage”) are small traditional Japanese containers for holding small objects that hang from the waist. The Inro came into fashion in the Keicho period (1596–1615) used as portable medicine boxes made of lacquer and mainly decorated with mythological motives. Later on other materials were used, such as various metals, faience, porcelain, ivory, etc. By the eighteenth century they had become decorative accessories mainly used by the merchant class and samurai.

The beautiful printed illustrations are devoted to the preparation and performance of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, which is an art form used for more than six hundred years in Japan. The basic idea of tea ceremony is exem- plified in the expression of harmony, reverence, purity and tranquility. The prints present the rituals including how to arrange and clean the utensils, prepare the tea (matcha), arrange flowers and making sweets, and also how to receive the guests. Performed by gorgeous women in various delicate kimono outfits in fine settings, all rendered in exquisite colours. Descriptive text in Japanese.

A collection of beautiful coloured silk samples which used to belong to a Japanese manufacturer of high-quality silk.

The Hindu story of Shakuntala is told in the epic Ma- habharata, considered the best of Kalidasa’s works. Kalidasa was a Sanskrit poet and dramatist widely regarded as the greatest Indian writer of any epoch. Rare, interesting album with so many different designs, all executed in brilliant colours, several highlighted with metallic pigments. The great diversity of motifs varies from everyday subjects to more fancy themes, several with humorous ele- ments. Fine impression, in lovely condition. The artist Kawarasak Kôtô was a a renowned Kyoto-based designer and illustrator at this time. No copies found in OCLC.

Bound in the traditional Japanese style. Original decorated paper wrappers, ribbon ties. The volumes are subtitled: tsuki (moon), hana (flower) and yuki (snow) respectively. An impressive large-size design book with motifs clearly inspired by nature which was common at this time. This particular set of kimono designs seems very rare. We haven’t been able to find any complete set in a western institution.

An album with thirty wonderful textile designs for “kosode” (short-sleeved ki- mono), woodblock-printed in vivid colours, some highlighted with metallic inks. Pp. 17 lvs. Original boards, worn.

According to the title and preface it seems that the designs were intended for ki- mono to be made for the beginning of spring. The lovely and colourful designs are mainly influenced by nature, including images of flowers, trees, birds, butterflies, etc. We believe it was made as a customer catalogue at a kimono store in Kyoto. It was published by the famous publishing house Unsôdô but we haven’t been able to find any information about the editor Goshûkai. A rare work, with no copies in OCLC or the Japanese database. First rare edition of Lengyel’s drama Typhoon which became a worldwide success with performances in Berlin, Paris and New York. Lengyel moved to the United States, became a screenwriter and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Writing with Ninotchka (1939). He also wrote the scripts for the cult film Blue An- gel (with Marlene Dietrich) and the American comedy To Be or Not to Be (1942). LESSEPS, J.B.B. De Lesseps accompanied as Interpreter on La Perousse circumnavigation which was designed to follow up on the voyage of Bougainville in establishing a French presence in the South Pacific. First and only edition of this glamorous catalogue by the prominent Liberty com- pany. Foreword by Arthur Fish, renowned British art specialist. Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843–1917) opened the first shop “The East India House” in 1875 on Regent street in London and sold many items from the Orient including fabrics. Within a few years the oriental fabrics became very popular and to meet the increasing demand the shop (now named Liberty) started to import un-dyed silk, cashmere and cotton fabrics, which were then hand-printed in England, in Eastern style. In 1884, Liberty established a costume department, in which clothing was designed and made from Liberty fabrics. The goal was not to make clothing that followed fashion; it was to make clothing based on historical costume, reinterpreted for the modern wearer as part of the Aesthetic Movement.

First edition of a biographical study comprising three works of cardinal Maillard de Tournon who was the first papal legate sent to the Imperial court of China, on behalf of the Pope Clement XI. He was born in Turin in 1668 of a noble family of Savoy.Tournon arrived at in December 1705. At first Emperor Kangxi re- ceived him kindly, but upon realising that he had come to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians he had Tournon imprisoned at Macau where he later died, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on August 1, 1707. Second French edition, first published in Latin titled “De Christiana expeditione apud sinas suspecta ab Societate Jesu”, Augsburg 1615. This important work on China is based on the journal kept by the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci during the time he served in the country (1582–1610). When Ricci arrived in 1582 in Macau, China was still closed to outsiders, but he learned the language, acquired knowl- edge about the country, and was able to go beyond cultural barriers which gave him entrance to the interior of country. Ricci’s manuscript was brought back to Europe by his successor Trigault, who translated it into Latin and also changed many passages of the journal and augmented it with information based on several Portuguese missionary reports. First edition of this rare album comprising a collection of humorous colourful de- signs by Kamisaka Sekka, who is considered the father of Japanese modern design. Sekka became famous for his courageous and visually dynamic designs. In 1901 he was sent to Europe as part of Japan’s “modernisation scheme” and as a result he became heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau style. Many of his works display a fusion of traditional Japanese and contemporary Western design concepts. A striking and unusual album which is rare to find complete as it is often broken up to be sold plate-by-plate.

This work dealing with the role of women in society and female education in Leba- non and Syria is one of the earliest of its kind. Henry Harris Jessup was an Ameri- can missionary who came to Syria (now Lebanon) in 1855 where he stayed and worked until his death. Jessup writes about the situation for women in the Moham- medan world in general but he also explains about the Druze religion; the extreme Shi’ite group Nusayriyyah; missionary schools for girls in Syria (and Lebanon); Druze women; Beduin Arabs; the cities of Homs and Aleppo; etc. Smith J21.

Rare first English edition. The Bengali original “Totakahini” was published earlier the same year in the famous journal Sabujapatra. Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), renowned Bengali poet, novelist, educator and composer has been considered to be the greatest writer in modern Indian literature. Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 as the first Asian recipient. This work is Tagore’s famous satire on the futility of education through rote-learning from books – ’parrot-fashion’ – then prevalent in India. He was a pioneer of creative education in India and started the school Patha Bhavana at Santiniketan in 1901 with a philosophy of learning with the heart in closeness to nature as opposed to the strict, repetitive and the rote learning system that was common during Tagore’s childhood. The humorous drawings are by Tagore’s artist nephew Abanindranath Tagore, the founder of the Bengal School of Art.

A beautiful collection with pat- terns based on traditional Japanese motifs and nature scenes clearly inspired by the Art Nouveau ornamental style that became so popular at the time. The designs were created for use in decorative art including textiles, metalwork and ceramics. The printer Yamada Naosaburo was the founder of Unsodo publishing company in Kyoto, known for high quality pattern books.

The interesting map of the North Pacific and the northwest coast of America is drawn and engraved by Sparrman himself based on a map pub- lished in 1781. The Jesuit mission in Vietnam commenced in 1615 and was active until the suppression of the Jesuits by Pope Clement in 1733. Manuel Ferreira was a Portuguese Jesuit who served for many years in Vietnam at the end of the 17th century, of which several spent in prison.
