Ecclesiological Tendencies in the Ecumenical Approach of the Council of Crete
Ecclesiological Tendencies in the Ecumenical Approach of the Council of Crete Alexandru-Marius Crișan* The Ecumenical legacy of the Council of Crete convened in 2016 is extremely important because of the consistent discussions on this topic during the grounding of the Council, but mostly subsequent to that, when the process of reception of the Council began. The Holy and Great Council of Crete of 2016, known also as the Pan- Orthodox Council, issued six official documents plus a Message and an Encyclical. Among those documents, one is dedicated to the question of ecumenical relations. Inside various Orthodox Autocephalous Churches different groups denounced the Council because of its ecumenical approach, meaning that a good understanding of the ecumenical legacy of the Council of Crete is one of the most important keys in its reception. In this study I will try to inspect the ecclesiological theology found in the Document on Ecumenical Relations released in 2016 by the Council of Crete, thereby analyzing why some of the groups rejected this document. Comparing different forms of the documents with the final approved form will help us understand how the Orthodox approach to ecumenism evolved in time, since the beginning of the preparations for the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church. The female superior of a community of nuns appointed by a bishop; Mother Superior. She has general authority over her community and nunnery under the supervision of a bishop. Abbot. (from Aram. abba , father; Gr. Hegoumenos , Sl. Nastoyatel ). The head of a monastic community or monastery, appointed by a bishop or elected by the members of the community. He has ordinary jurisdiction and authority over his monastery, serving in particular as spiritual father and guiding the members of his community. Abstinence. (Gr. Nisteia ). A penitential practice consisting of voluntary deprivation of certain foods for religious reasons. In the Orthodox Church, days of abstinence are observed on Wednesdays and Fridays, or other specific periods, such as the Great Lent (see fasting). Acolyte. The follower of a priest; a person assisting the priest in church ceremonies or services. In the early Church, the acolytes were adults; today, however, his duties are performed by children (altar boys). Aër. (Sl. Vozdukh ). The largest of the three veils used for covering the paten and the chalice during or after the Eucharist. It represents the shroud of Christ. Yes, we are. Okay. I'm just going to ident who I am Ilze. My name is Judy Caine and I'm in Uppingham with Ilze Grickus as part of the Changing Corby Latvian project. We’re in Don Paddy's in Uppingham, and it is Thursday the 17th of January 2019. Could you just for the tape give me your full name and tell me your date of birth. Ilze Grickus: [00:00:26] My name is Ilze Grickus. I was born on the 13th of April in 1947 which makes me almost 72 years of age. I was actually born in Manchester. Judy Caine: [00:00:40] Good heavens. So, What's your connection with Latvia? Ilze Grickus: [00:00:42] Well my parents are Latvian, or were, they are deceased now, my father came over here after the war as my mother, my mother was a nurse. My father was a professional soldier. And then they were offered the opportunity to come to England in order to make a new life for themselves. At the time they had actually thought they were going to go back to Latvia. But obviously as time went on, and then they met up and got married and there you go. Judy Caine: So, what made you settle in this area? Ilze Grickus: Well, that was the steelworks. -

How Orthodox is the Eastern Orthodox Church? Introduction As a result of some questions I thought it wise to give a simple evaluation of the Eastern Orthodox Church (EOC). 1 This is even more relevant since recent decades have seen hordes of evangelicals (especially disaffected Charismatics) relocate into the EOC under the presumption that it has more fundamental historic prestige than modern churches. While in some doctrines the EOC has been a safeguard of apostolic and early church patriarchal teaching (such as the Trinity), and while they hold to good Greek NT manuscripts, we should not accept a multitude of other teachings and practices which are unbiblical. You should also be aware that this church has formally condemned Calvinism in church statutes. The answer to the question, ‘ How Orthodox is the Eastern Orthodox Church? ’ is simply, ‘ Not very; in fact it is downright heretical in doctrine and practice ’. Here are the reasons why; but first I will give a potted history of the Orthodox Church. History What is the EOC? The Orthodox Church, or the Eastern Orthodox Church, 2 is a federation of Churches originating in the Greek-speaking Church of the Byzantine Empire, which reject the authority of the Roman Pope. It has the Patriarch of Constantinople 3 as its head and uses elaborate and archaic rituals. It calls itself, ‘The Holy Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church’. I will try to make this very complicated history as simple as I can. The history is also hindered by different sources contradicting each other and making mistakes of fact. Pre Chalcedon (to 451) The initial foundations of Greek theology were laid down by the Greek Fathers, such as Athanasius, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria, and the Cappadocian Fathers (the ‘Three Hierarchs’) i.e. -

It is to be hoped, however, now that attention is again called to the subject, that the clue may be found that shall unlock their meaning, and that Northern 8yI"ia will be no longer overlooked by tho explorer. DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva tion. -
