Jay, Chair This dissertation reconstructs the intellectual and political reception of Critical Theory, as first developed in Germany by the “Frankfurt School” at the Institute of Social Research and subsequently reformulated by Jürgen Habermas, in the Netherlands from the mid to late twentieth century. Although some studies have acknowledged the role played by Critical Theory in reshaping particular academic disciplines in the Netherlands, while others have mentioned the popularity of figures such as Herbert Marcuse during the upheavals of the 1960s, this study shows how Critical Theory was appropriated more widely to challenge the technocratic directions taken by the project of vernieuwing (renewal or modernization) after World War II. The Ideology All rights reserved. © Conclusion INTRODUCTION1 Understanding the movement and the ideology la- belled Calvinism is a rather challenging topic. But none- theless it is an important topic to tackle. As important as any part of such an endeavour is deciding on a “plan of attack” in getting into the topic. The movement covered by this label “Calvinism” has spread out its tentacles all over the place and in many different, sometimes in conflicting directions. The logical starting place is with the person whose name has been attached to the label, although I’m quite sure he would be most uncomfortable with most of the content bearing his name.2 After exploring the history of John Calvin, we will take a look at a few of the more influential interpreters of Calvin over the subsequent centuries into the present day. This will open the door to attempt to explain the ideology of Calvinism with some of the distinctive terms and concepts associated exclusively with it. I. The Persons From the digging into the history of Calvinism, I have discovered one clear fact: Calvinism is a religious thinking in the 1500s of Switzerland when he lived and movement that goes well beyond John Calvin, in some worked. -

Wachtel 2013 Abstract My dissertation connects the Jesuit missions in Canada to the global Jesuit missionary project in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by exploring the impact of French religious politics on the organizing of the first Canadian mission, established at Port Royal, Acadia, in 1611. After the Wars of Religion, Gallican Catholics blamed the Society for the violence between French Catholics and Protestants, portraying Jesuits as underhanded usurpers of royal authority in the name of the Pope—even accusing the priests of advocating regicide. As a result, both Port Royal’s settlers and its proprietor, Jean de Poutrincourt, never trusted the missionaries, and the mission collapsed within two years. After Virginia pirates destroyed Port Royal, Poutrincourt drew upon popular anti- Jesuit stereotypes to blame the Jesuits for conspiring with the English. Father Pierre Biard, one of the missionaries, responded with his 1616 Relation de la Nouvelle France, which described Port Royal’s Indians and narrated the Jesuits’ adventures in North America, but served primarily as a defense of their enterprise. Religio-political infighting profoundly influenced the interaction between Indians and Europeans in the earliest years of Canadian settlement. -

A Formula for Disobedience: Jansenism, Gender, and the Feminist Paradox* Daniella Kostroun Stonehill College On the morning of June 10, 1664, the archbishop of Paris, Hardouin de Pe´- re´fixe, met with Marguerite de Sainte-Gertrude Dupre´, a nun at the convent of Port Royal de Paris, for a one-on-one conversation. His purpose for this meet- ing was to change Dupre´’s mind about her refusal to sign a formula con- demning the Augustinus (1640), a theological study by Cornelius Jansen, the late bishop of Ypres. According to Dupre´’s own account, the archbishop began the interview by offering her a chair and expressing his confidence that he could ease her doubts. He asked her, “Why, my sister, can you not sign? One must not say that one will not do something out of stubbornness, one must have one’s reasons; ah, tell them to me.”1 When Dupre´ responded, “It would not be right, Monsignor, to fail in what you wish from us without reason, and if my conscience would allow me ...,”2 he interrupted her abruptly: “My conscience . my conscience! The Transferable Power of Polemic: Antoine Arnauld’s Arrainment of the whole societie of Jesuites in Fraunce (1594) and Anti-Jesuit Sentiment in France and England Carol Baxter On 12 and 13 July 1594, the barrister Antoine Arnauld appeared before the Parlement de Paris on behalf of the University of Paris to argue against the Jesuits gaining teaching rights in the city. Arnauld’s speech was printed in Paris shortly afterwards as the Plaidoyé de M. Antoine Arnauld advocat en parlement, et cy devant conseiller & procureur general de la defuncte roine mere des roys: pour l’Université de Paris demanderesse, contre les Jesuites demandeurs, des 12 & 13 juillet 1594. The text was quickly translated into English and printed that same year, 1594, by the London printer Charles Yetsweirt as The Arrainment of the whole societie of Jesuites in Fraunce; holden in the honorable Court of Parlement in Paris, the 12. and 13. of July 1594. The English translation was subsequently acquired by James Ussher, Archbishop of Armagh, the Church of Ireland’s leading seventeenth-century theologian and an avid book collector. It formed part of the Ussher collection donated by King Charles II in 1661 to Trinity College where it continues to be held today.1 The Arrainment is the unique example of a French text written to defend the rights of one monarch, which was translated into English possibly on the orders of a second monarch, and which was donated to Trinity College Library as the gift of a third. ________________________ 1.
