Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity. -

I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

Richard Hooker, “that saint-like man”, en zijn strijd op twee fronten Dr. Chris de Jong Renaissance, Humanisme en de Reformatie hebben in Europa een intellectuele, politieke en godsdienstige aardverschuiving veroorzaakt, die geen enkel aspect van de samenleving onberoerd liet. Toen na ongeveer anderhalve eeuw het stof was neergeslagen (1648 Vrede van Westfalen, 1660 Restauratie in Engeland), was Europa onherkenbaar veranderd. Het Protestantse noorden had zich ontworsteld aan de heerschappij van het Rooms-Katholieke zuiden. Dit raakte de meest uiteenlopende zaken: landsgrenzen waren opnieuw getrokken, dynastieke verhoudingen waren gewijzigd, politieke invloedssferen gefragmenteerd als nooit tevoren en het zwaartepunt van de Europese economie was definitief verschoven van de noordelijke oevers van de Middellandse Zee naar Duitsland en de Noordzeekusten. De door Maarten Luther in 1517 in gang gezette Reformatie heeft de eenheid van godsdienst, cultuur, taal en filosofie grotendeels doen verdwijnen. Dat niet alleen, de verbrokkeling en uitholling van het eens zo machtige Rooms-Katholieke geestelijke imperium, die al in de Middeleeuwen begonnen waren, hebben mede de omstandigheden geschapen waardoor vanaf het midden van de zeventiende eeuw een nieuwe intellectuele beweging Europa kon overspoelen: de Verlichting. In Engeland werd de omwenteling in 1534 (Act of Supremacy) in gang gezet door Koning Hendrik VIII (*1491; r. 1509-1547), een conservatief in godsdienstige zaken die niets van Luther moest hebben. Bijgestaan door de onvermoeibare “patron of preaching” Thomas Cromwell (1485-1540) zegde hij in deze 16de eeuwse Brexit de gehoorzaamheid aan Rome op en maakte zo de weg vrij voor een wereldwijde economische en politieke expansie van Engeland. The Historical Denial of the Free Offer
The Historical Denial of the Free Offer Modern Calvinist leaders who teach the free offer usually claim that they have support from historic Reformed theology. This is false. They frequently claim that Calvin supports their position and that the chief Reformed standards justify their claims. All this is false also. Historic Calvinism, both in its accepted standards and as expressed by its main theologians, denies the free offer; indeed, it would recognise the teaching of modern free offer preachers as Amyraldism, and condemn it as error. Now such is the lack of knowledge on these matters amongst today’s churchgoers that my claims here must be evidenced. I am happy to comply with this to demonstrate the truth. This paper is written to show what the foremost Reformed standards and theologians teach regarding the free offer. What is the free offer? The free offer is the teaching that: 1. God has a good intent to reprobates. 2. God loves all men without exception. 3. God desires, and even wills, the salvation of all men. 4. God gives grace to all men to some degree. To this the following is at least implied: 1. The atonement of Christ is universal in scope; he died for all. 2. Conversion is conditioned upon the will of the sinner. The Arminian basis of this theology is plain to see. Where does this come from? This teaching was once restricted to those who followed the school of Moses Amyraut (or Amyrald, 1596-1664) who sought to unite the universalism of Lutherans with the sovereign particularity of Calvinists. -
How English Baptists Changed the Early Modern Toleration Debate
RADICALLY [IN]TOLERANT: HOW ENGLISH BAPTISTS CHANGED THE EARLY MODERN TOLERATION DEBATE Caleb Morell Dr. Amy Leonard Dr. Jo Ann Moran Cruz This research was undertaken under the auspices of Georgetown University and was submitted in partial fulfillment for Honors in History at Georgetown University. ABSTRACT The argument of this thesis is that the contrasting visions of church, state, and religious toleration among the Presbyterians, Independents, and Baptists in seventeenth-century England, can best be explained only in terms of their differences over Covenant Theology. That is, their disagreements on the ecclesiological and political levels were rooted in more fundamental disagreements over the nature of and relationship between the biblical covenants. The Baptists developed a Covenant Theology that diverged from the dominant Reformed model of the time in order to justify their practice of believer’s baptism. This precluded the possibility of a national church by making baptism, upon profession of faith, the chief pre- requisite for inclusion in the covenant community of the church. Church membership would be conferred not upon birth but re-birth, thereby severing the links between infant baptism, church membership, and the nation. Furthermore, Baptist Covenant Theology undermined the dominating arguments for state-sponsored religious persecution, which relied upon Old Testament precedents and the laws given to kings of Israel. These practices, the Baptists argued, solely applied to Israel in the Old Testament in a unique way that was not applicable to any other nation. Rather in the New Testament age, Christ has willed for his kingdom to go forth not by the power of the sword but through the preaching of the Word. -

Packer's introduction to a 1958 reprint of John Owen's, The Death of Death in the Death of Christ (Banner of Truth: London) The Death of Death in the Death of Christ (Owen Works, X:139:148) is a polemical piece, designed to show among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural and destructive of the gospel. There are many, therefore, to whom it is not likely to be of interest. Those who see no need for doctrinal exactness and have no time for theological debates which show up divisions between so- called evangelicals may well regret its reappearance. Some may find the very sound of Owen's thesis so shocking that they will refuse to read his book at all, so passionate a thing is prejudice, and so proud are we of our theological shibboleths. But it is hoped that this classic may find itself readers of a different spirit. There are signs today of a new upsurge of interest in the theology of the Bible: a new readiness to test traditions, to search the Scriptures and to think through the faith. It is to those who share this readiness that Owen's treatise is now offered, in the belief that it will help us in one of the most urgent tasks facing evangelical Christendom today - the recovery of the gospel.
