Drout Michael D.C. Drout is the William and Elsie Prentice Professor of English at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachu- setts, where he chairs the English depart- ment and teaches courses in Old and Middle English, medieval literature, Chaucer, fantasy, and science fiction. Professor Drout received his Ph.D. in medieval literature from Loyola University in 1997. He also holds M.A. degrees from Stanford (journalism) and the University © Benjamin Collier, BCCImages.com of Missouri-Columbia (English literature) and a B.A. from Carnegie Mellon. In 2006, Professor Drout was chosen as a Millicent C. McIntosh Fellow by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. In 2005, he was awarded the Prentice Professorship for outstanding teaching. The Wheaton College class of 2003 presented him with the Faculty Appreciation Award in that year. He is editor of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Beowulf and the Critics, which won the Mythopoeic Scholar- ship Award for Inklings Studies for 2003. He is also the author of How Tradition Works: A Meme-Based Cultural Poetics of the Anglo-Saxon Tenth Century (Arizona Medieval and Renaissance Studies). Drout is one of the founding editors of the journal Tolkien Studies and is editor of The J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia (Routledge). Drout has published extensively on medieval literature, including articles on William Langland’s Piers Plowman, Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon wills, the Old English translation of the Rule of Chrodegang, the Exeter Book “wisdom poems,” and Anglo-Saxon medical texts. He has also published articles on Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea books and Susan Cooper’s Dark Is Rising series of children’s fantasy novels. Drout has written an Old English grammar book, King Alfred’s Grammar, which is available for free at his website, www.michaeldrout.com. Drout’s remarkable A Way with Words series has increased listeners’ understanding of the language that we speak, rhetoric that shapes our lives, and the ways we understand the literature that we love. Now, in A Way with Words IV, Professor Drout examines the greatest artistic accomplishments of the English language: the ten centuries of great poetry in English. We live surrounded by poetry, though we do not always recognize it, and at our highest highs and lowest lows, we reach for poems, sayings, and songs. In Understanding Poetry, Drout traces the development of poetry from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day, celebrating the great achievements of English and explaining the techniques used to create the poems and the methods we use to understand them. The course touches on the greatest poets and poems of the English tradi- tion, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Wallace Stevens, and Robert Lowell. Drout skillfully mixes discussion of forms, meters, rhymes, and patterns with a genuine celebration of the joy of poetry in English, enhancing readers’ appreciation of poems and explain- ing “why” we love the particular poems we love. 5 Lecture 1: What Is Poetry? Auden People love poetry, and they are frightened by it. Poetry is old, dusty, hard to understand, and we reach for poetry when we are in love, or confronted by death, or very, very happy. Poetry is found in funny-looking, very thin books in an empty section of the bookstore or in forbidding school texts, and poetry pours through the air whenever we turn on a radio. Poetry is the supreme lin- guistic achievement of the human species, and we use poetry to sell donuts. All of the statements in the previous paragraph are true, which is why poetry is worth studying. Poetry is at once omnipresent (in popular music and greet- ing cards) and rare (in the great poems of the past that are so challenging to understand). It is a natural part of human life, present in even the earliest societies, but it is also a matter of great refinement and exclusivity. In this course we will examine both how poetry works and where it has come from. To these ends, we will discuss the particular qualities of poetry (such as rhyme, meter, alliteration) and the history of poetry in English. By pulling these two strands together in multiple lectures, we will see how techniques and meanings have evolved over time, and we will also develop a set of ana- lytical skills that we can use to understand new poems. Thus this course is not a traditional survey (“From Beowulf to Virginia Woolf) but is instead a mixed approach. We will go in chronological order, because that is easier to remember, but we will also be building up analysis of different techniques. At the end of the course, you will have the skills and the historical knowledge to understand and appreciate poetry from different times and different genres.     Annual Report 2020 On the Cover The Downtown Street Art and Mural Project As the nation struggled to contain the coronavirus pandemic, it was further rocked by the death of George Floyd on May 25 while in the custody of the Minneapolis police. Floyd’s death set off protests across the nation, and around the world. In Madison, peaceful daytime protests were followed by looting in the evenings, which forced many businesses to shutter their storefronts with plywood. The Madison Arts Commission, funded in part by a Community Impact grant from Madison Community Foundation (MCF), responded to the bleak sight of State Street by creating the Downtown Street Art and Mural Project, which engaged dozens of local artists to use these spaces as an opportunity for expression and civic engagement. More than 100 murals, including the one on our cover, were painted in and around State Street, creating a vibrant visual dialogue addressing racism, memorializing lost lives and inspiring love. Artists participated in panel discussions and were highlighted in local and national media. “Let’s Talk About It: The Art, The Artists and the Racial Justice Movement on Madison’s State Street,” a book focused on the project, was produced by (and is available through) the American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact. In addition, several of the murals will become part of the permanent collection of the Wisconsin Historical Museum. MCF’s long-standing vision — that greater Madison will be a vibrant and generous place where all people thrive — is impossible to achieve without ending racism. We remain committed to this journey.

  • Abstract Old English Elegies: Language and Genre
    ABSTRACT OLD ENGLISH ELEGIES: LANGUAGE AND GENRE Stephanie Opfer, PhD Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Dr. Susan E. Deskis, Director The Old English elegies include a group of poems found in the Exeter Book manuscript that have traditionally been treated as a single genre due to their general sense of lament – The Wanderer, The Seafarer, The Riming Poem, Deor, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament, Resignation, Riddle 60, The Husband’s Message, and The Ruin. In this study, I conduct a linguistic stylistic analysis of all ten poems using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and a variety of computational and linguistic tools: Lexomics, Voyant, and Microsoft Excel. My results focus on three characteristics of the poetry: (1) the similarity of the linguistic style within the poems, measured by Lexomics; (2) an oscillation between first- and third-person clausal Themes, measured using SFL analysis; and (3) themes in the lexical categorization, measured through detailed lexical analysis. In the end, my methodology creates a new and more nuanced definition of the elegy: a relatively short reflective or dramatic poem, similar in style and content to other elegiac poems, that alternates between first- and third-person perspectives and includes (1) themes of exile; (2) imagery of water or the sea, the earth, and/or the weather; and (3) words expressing both joy and sorrow. Ultimately, I argue for a recategorization of only five poems as “Old English elegies”: The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament, and The Riming Poem.     THE TRANSFORMING SELF AND OTHERWORLDLY WISDOM: SOURCES OF POETIC INSPIRATION IN MEDIEVAL NORTHWEST EUROPE by TIMOTHY HANNON (Under the Direction of Katharina Wilson) ABSTRACT Certain tales of the medieval Norse, Anglo-Saxons, Irish and Welsh explain the source of poetic inspiration as existing in a world apart, whether that be in the realm of the gods, in the Celtic Otherworld, or with the Christian God. Generally, each culture follows a similar pattern in explaining the process of inspiration, beginning with a binding or a containment in the physical world, followed by danger-tinged contemplation, and eventually leading to communication with the source of poetry. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.

    ENGLISH ALLITERATIVE VERSE English Alliterative Verse tells the story of the medieval poetic tradition that includes Beowulf, Piers Plowman, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, stretching from the eighth century, when English poetry first appeared in manuscripts, to the sixteenth century, when alliterative poetry ceased to be composed. Eric Weiskott draws on the study of meter to challenge the traditional division of medieval English literary history into ‘Old English’ and ‘Middle English’ periods. The two halves of the alliterative tradition, divided by the Norman Conquest of 1066, have been studied separately since the nineteenth century; this book uses the history of metrical form and its cultural meanings to bring the two halves back together. They comprised people from Germanic tribes who migrated to the island from continental Europe, their descendants, and indigenous British groups who adopted many aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture and language. The Anglo-Saxons established the Kingdom of England, and the modern English language owes almost half of its words – including the most common words of everyday speech – to their language. Historically, the Anglo-Saxon period denotes the period in Britain between about 450 and 1066, after their initial settlement and up until the Norman conquest. The early Anglo-Saxon period includes the creation of an English nation, with many of the aspects that survive today, including regional government of shires and hundreds. During this period, Christianity was established and there was a flowering of literature and language. Charters and law were also established. The term Anglo-Saxon is popularly used for the language that was spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons in England and eastern Scotland between at least the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century. In scholarly use, it is more commonly called Old English. Language: Old English (Ænglisc, Anglisc, Englisc) or Anglo-Saxon is the early form of the English language that was spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons and their descendants in parts of what are now England and southern and eastern Scotland between at least the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century.

    1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.
