Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. This allows for the introduction of cultural elements and their historical situating. ii Culture elements that shape soccer style include the history of the country, the history of soccer within the country, national habitus and national identity, and the impact of colonialism. Other cultural elements that influence soccer style and are thus examined include the interpretation of class and politics, race, gender, globalization trends, and religion. An examination of significant individual that have impacted on the sport is included, as well as analysis of training philosophies and unique features. Conclusions and Further Questions ……………………………………….. 768 Bibliography ………………………………………………………………………... 786 viii CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Soccer playing style captures the imagination of every soccer fan in the world, but defining and analyzing style has been problematic due not only to the depth of the question but also because of the necessity of situating the problematic historically and culturally. This study examines soccer style, and specifically, the intersection of national team playing style with culture and with history. It will look at what elements in the culture shape or influence individual national style, and I will describe in detail my theory that soccer style is shaped by some very specific cultural elements, such as national identity, conceptions of gender, race, and other cultural interpretations, as well as the history and sport history of the country. In the process, it will be necessary to detail a definition of style, and define how “style” is played out in reference to my two case studies, Germany and Brazil. I came to this study from two converging areas, my own background with soccer and my academic background… “What is wrong with you? I knew we shouldn’t let a girl on this team. Why don’t you just go back to being the athletic trainer? GET YOUR WEIGHT ON YOUR TOES WHEN YOU’RE DEFENDING SOMEONE!!!” My introduction to the wonderful world of male competitive soccer at the collegiate level was less than inspiring. Yes, I 1 had legitimately made the team, but in the process had bumped a male contender out of a varsity spot. Not a great situation in which to start my new athletic career, nonetheless, one that exhilarated me. Right up until the moment that the Iranian center forward slide tackled me into an ignominious heap to emphasize that not only should women not be playing soccer with men, but appearing on the field in soccer shorts was a direct affront to his sensibilities. However, through the first month of endless running, conditioning drills, scrapes, bruises (all from my own teammates) and sore muscles, I gloried in the game. I loved this game with its intricacies, strategies, balletic and elegant flow of play combined with hard-nosed tackles, dirt, and lots of blood, mainly mine. I was never a superstar, but got into a few games as a substitute and played hard. I fell in love with the game, and that endearing feeling has never wavered. Ten years later I stood on the touchline watching my five year old son play what was supposed to be the same game. Not a chance! Between the coach yelling “Just kick the ball!” and the other parents cheering wildly at what looked like a rugby scrum in the middle of the field, I stood in open-mouthed amazement. The next season I began coaching as an assistant, wanting to bring my love of the game as well as a little bit of skill to these children. Love of the game is never a problem with little boys…. Skill however, often is. Thus began a coaching career that spanned several decades. I took coaching courses, attended lectures, watched every game available on television, read books and worked my way up the ranks, along with my two boys. We did recreational soccer, travel team soccer, and Olympic Development soccer. As the boys entered high 2 school, I decided it probably wasn’t in their best interest to have “Mom” coach them anymore, and so pursued my own coaching career. I worked my way up

    FUTSAL GUIDE INTRODUCTION TO FUTSAL FUTSAL was first played in 1885. Roger Grain in Montevideo, Uruguay defined the modern standard set of rules in 1932. FUTSAL’s essential elements consist of five players a side on a basketball size court with a variety of surfaces using a no-bounce ball. The sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing. The no-bounce ball requires players to propel the ball using skill and the proper technique, rather than rely on the bounce of the ball. The priority in FUTSAL is to motivate players in a safe environment conducive to learning. The more pleasure kids derive from their participation, the more they wish to play and practice on their own. While their instinct to play is natural, their affection and appreciation for FUTSAL must be cultivated. FUTSAL is a great developer of such skills as: x Stop and go x Ball control x Quick feet x Dribbling x Shooting skill and power x Strategy and tactics x Individual and team play x Fair play FUTSAL: x Allows players numerous opportunities to frequently touch the one "toy" on the field, namely, the ball. x Presents many opportunities to score goals and score goals often. x Encourages regaining possession of the ball as a productive, fun and rewarding part of the game (defending). x Maximizes active participation and minimizes inactivity and boredom. x Eliminates complicated rules such as offsides that may hinder youngsters from "playing" and learning. x Allows the game to be the teacher! In Latin America and many countries in Europe, FUTSAL is second only to soccer as the most played sport.

From the weekly pick-up game in the local park, through seats in the stands at the weekend, to hours at home glued to the TV set, the world’s most popular sport by far provides millions of amateur and professional players, and hundreds of millions of fans around the planet, a temporary escape from the drudgery of their everyday existence. For a tiny handful, it can offer a way out of poverty, although very rarely to the riches and life-style that is the dream of so many boys (far fewer girls, as there is very little money to be earned in the women’s game as yet), and via their children’s success, much better than a pension for their parents. Viewed more positively, professional soccer brings larger masses of people together, and on a regular basis, than just about anything except wars. Matches at whatever level are one of the few remaining occasions when people express themselves passionately and publicly, and interact with one another instead of with anti-social computer screens and mind-numbing, hand-held electronic devices. The theoretical framework is based on both onomastic studies, such as Amaral (2011), Amaral e Seide (2020), Bajo Pérez (2002), Becker (2012), Fernández Leborans (1999), Urrutia and Sánchez (2009), Van Langendonck (2007), Fernández Leborans (1999) and on analyses about Brazilian soccer studies such as Rodrigues (2010) and Caetano and Rodrigues (2009). The data analyzed are the players’ names on the lists selected to compete World Cup in that period. These names are classified in order to observe variation and change over time. The results indicate a predominance of official names in almost every year as well as a greater contemporary trend towards more formal name variants.     http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8042.2017v29n51p174 JOVENS: escola, futebol e projetos de vida Bruno Martins Ferreira1 Osmar Moreira de Souza Junior2 Luana Zanotto3 Fernando Donizete Alves4 RESUMO Esse artigo buscou compreender os projetos de vida de 11 meninos entre quinze e dezesseis anos, estudantes do primeiro ano de ensino médio de uma escola estadual situada em São Carlos-SP. De abordagem qualitativa, se utilizou questionários e for- mação de grupos focais para a coleta dos dados. Os resultados foram organizados em quatro categorias de discussão: i) “significado de ser jovem”,ii) “significação da escola na vida dos jovens”, iii) “significado do futebol na vida dos jovens” e iv) “jovens, pro- jetos de vida, crenças e desejos sobre o futuro”. Os participantes apontaram a escola como base em seus futuros, legitimando o cumprimento do ciclo regular na ideia de ser “alguém na vida”. Somado a isso, o futebol foi significado como modo de socialização, paixão, lazer e sonho, sendo visto como possibilidade de valorização pessoal, social e financeira, embora deflagrada a dificuldade de tal desejo ser sustentável em relação a crença dos próprios jovens.     Intercom – Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação XXXIX Congresso Brasileiro de Ciências da Comunicação – São Paulo - SP – 05 a 09/09/2016 Tecnologias do imaginário como ferramentas para compreender as derrotas do Brasil nas Copas de 1950 e 20141 Lucas RIZZATTI2 Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS Resumo Diante da repercussão da derrota do Brasil para a Alemanha na Copa do Mundo de 2014, surgiram diversas comparações do trauma recente em relação ao primeiro revés da seleção como anfitrião desse evento, em 1950. O objetivo é igualmente estabelecer uma comparação, mas sob ponto de vista jornalístico, acerca do possível impacto dos meios de comunicação de cada época na construção dos vilões das derrotas. Pretende-se apresentar a noção de tecnologias do imaginário para nortear as seguintes questões, entre outras: teriam os brasileiros absorvido da mesma maneira um fracasso esportivo com diferença de 64 anos uma vez que os meios de comunicação parecem ter recursos distintos de emissão e apropriação? O quanto isso pode afetar a cristalização do imaginário do culpado por uma derrota? Assim, busca-se uma reflexão preliminar sobre os meios e suas coberturas. Introdução Um dos maiores eventos esportivos do planeta, a Copa do Mundo vai muito além de suas implicações relativas ao futebol. Mexe com imaginário de uma nação, tem capacidade de eleger heróis e vilões e, por que não, pode sintetizar conceitos e tendências de uma determinada época. Não raro, lembranças ou personagens são evocados como exemplos ou sintetizadores de determinada Copa do Mundo e, por consequência, acabam se perpetuando e ultrapassando a fronteira de um campo de jogo.
