Scottish Board sponsors Enterprising Maths

On Thursday 28 September, schools from across , East Lothian and Midlothian came together at Meadowbank Sports Centre to compete in the annual Enterprising Maths in the Lothians competition. This is the second year this event has been proudly sponsored by the IFoA’s Scottish Board.

This year, almost 150 students from an impressive 31 schools took part, tackling a variety of mathematical puzzles and problems. These ranged from creating a poster on risk, set and judged by Alan Watson and Barry Shannon from the Scottish Board, as well as individual mental calculation rounds, a whole-team competition, a speed competition and a relay.

In a thrilling climax, packed with tension, James Gillespie’s High School prevailed! They took the trophy by a single point against runners up, Dunbar Grammar School, with St Thomas of Aquin's in 3rd place. These top performing schools now qualify for the National finals, also sponsored by the IFoA, which will take place in Glasgow in November.

Alan Watson, Leader of the Scottish Board, commented, "The Board is extremely proud to sponsor and attend this event for another year. To see so many students in attendance, their enthusiasm for the subject, and their mathematical ability (solving problems which we ourselves struggled with!) was fantastic."
