For APP City/Employer Insights: If your school has ‘FSM’ in the Social Criteria column, then you must have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point during your secondary schooling. If your school has ‘FSM or FG’ in the Social Criteria column, then you must have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point during your secondary schooling or be among the first generation in your family to attend university. For APP Reach: Applicants need to have achieved at least 5 A-C at National 5 and be eligible for free school meals OR first generation to university (regardless of school attended) Exceptions for the academic and social criteria can be made on a case-by-case basis for children in care or those with extenuating circumstances.     ANNUAL REVIEW 2018 – 19 “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair” - Nelson Mandela - 2 Foreword… 2018-19 was a year of self-reflection for the Active Schools team, having completed the Insights Personality test. Understanding others and appreciating our differences was one of the key learnings. This programme helped us build valuable working relationships and a network of partners, allowing Active Schools to make the impact they have made this year. The Active Schools team continue to work with and nurture senior pupils who officiate, coach, organise competitions, become Young Ambassadors who are our decision makers. Gaining relevant sports qualifications and valuable experience in delivery, the young people are able to Jude Salmon develop their employability skills. Active Schools Manager In today’s world we are affected by factors including stress, mental health, obesity and poverty. Taking part in sport and physical activity truly does make a difference to our lives and I hope that some of the stories you are about to read will illustrate this to you. The phrase, ‘healthy body, healthy mind’ says it all. Our bodies were designed to move and when we keep them healthy, we have a better outlook on life, and on learning. The most wonderful part of keeping fit and healthy is that it is fun, but as this annual review shows, it can also open doors into future careers through volunteering and coaching.

    December 2018 UPDATE View a full colour version on our website: www.dyceacademy.aberdeen.sch.uk WELCOME As we head towards the Christmas holidays we try to strike a balance between keeping the focus on the work of the school and acknowledging some of the more festive celebrations around this time of year. On the work front we are very aware of the need to prepare our senior pupils for estimate exams in January. Therefore pupils and staff know they will be working hard in class up to the end of the week. The estimate timetable has been issued to our seniors and a copy has been provided to parents via email. Young people should be planning their study alongside ensuring they rest and recharge the batteries. Our term will end with House assemblies which feature a reflection on the year so far and our hopes for the year to come: lots of pictures, music, performances and the presentation of awards to those who have contributed so much to the sponsored walk. We raised over £5 000 which is a superb effort in quite difficult times. Look out for the staff video on Youtube. Might be the staff that are ‘banned’ from ASDA – you’ll see what I mean when you view our efforts. I am always proud of the way our young people show kindness within our community. They have supported charity events such as Christmas Jumper Day to support Save the Children; they have gathered gifts for needy teenagers and supported the local foodbank by bringing in a wide range of items.

    COMPASSION DETERMINATION HONESTY SELF-BELIEF RESILIENCE RESPECT SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2018 A message from our Headteacher I hope you find this newsletter not only informative, but also that you are pleased with the continued efforts being made by staff and pupils alike to attain and achieve. The newsletter will reflect the range of opportunities young people enjoy and their success. It will also reflect that the staff continue to offer and deliver a range of opportunities to young people which are second to none. The SQA exam diet for 2018 is complete and once again all of our young people have demonstrated the capacities of curriculum for excellence, in the responsible, confident and effective way they have conducted themselves throughout the exam period. Our SQA invigilators congratulated the pupils for their exemplary behaviour, both the exam candidates and the junior pupils who ensured their conduct was such that the conditions for sitting exams were excellent. For those who sat SQA exams, time will tell if you have demonstrated that you are also successful learners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our team of invigilators who provide a consistent level of excellence to Castle Douglas High School. When the results are released in August there will be staff in school on Wednesday 8th August, from 10am – 2pm, to answer queries and to help young people make decisions about their learning pathways should they feel their subject choices have to change based on their results. It is not often that a school wins a national competition, especially a competition where the number of entries and the quality of those entries is so high.

    CashBack for Communities North Ayrshire Local Authority 2015/16 About CashBack for Communities CashBack for Communities is a Scottish Government programme which takes funds recovered from the proceeds of crime and invests them into free activities and programmes for young people across Scotland. Inspiring Scotland is the delivery partner for the CashBack for Communities programme, appointed in July 2012. CashBack invests monies seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 back into our communities. Since 2008 the Scottish Government has committed £92 million to CashBack / community initiatives, funding community activities and facilities largely, but not exclusively, for young people. CashBack supports all 32 Local Authorities across Scotland. Sporting and recreational activities / culture / mentoring and employability / community projects. CashBack has delivered nearly 2 million activities and opportunities for young people. Phase 3 of CashBack runs to end March 2017 and is focused on positive outcomes for young people. CashBack for Communities: Aims CashBack activities: . Use the proceeds of crime in a positive way to expand young people’s horizons and increase their opportunities to develop their interests and skills in an enjoyable, fulfilling and supportive way. Are open, where possible, to all children and young people, while focusing resources in those communities suffering most from antisocial behaviour and crime. Seek to increase levels of participation to help divert young people away from ‘at risk’ behaviour, and will aim to increase the positive long-term outcomes for those who take part.
